Integrated Science Bulk Properties Summative Project Description and Rubric:
Description: Students will complete inquiry labs to determine the following properties of ionic and
covalent substances:




Flammability
Solubility
Melting Point
Boiling Point
Each property will be determined and accompanied by a report which will have the following format:
1. Introduction: What are the goals of the project? Why are you doing this? What is the definition
of your property?
2. Methodology: What are the steps to meet your goals? What process did you use to determine
the properties of the different substances? Should be specific enough someone else could
replicate your experiment.
3. Results: Charts, observations, findings of experimentation.
4. Conclusion: Using your results, make a conclusion about your experiment relating to the
property being determined. (ex: Covalent substances have higher boiling points than ionic
substances. I determined this because C2H5O7 (covalent) boiled at a higher temperature than
NaCl. (ionic).
Notes:
•
If you are absent during a lab day, for that property you will write the definition. Make note you
were absent & get results from someone else.
•
Correctness of conclusion is based on YOUR results, if your conclusion does not match your
results, it will be counted as incorrect. Emphasis is on making correct conclusions based on
results, not getting accurate results.
•
You must have both qualitative and quantitative details in your report:
• Qualitative: quality, details such as large, small, color, fast, slow
• Quantitative: quantity, 50 mL, 65 seconds (NUMBERS)
Rubric: “correctness” is determined by the categories outlined above.
RUBRIC: Total of 30 summative points
