Subject: Textiles Curriculum
Year
group
Students study a programme of learning over the course of 18 weeks and have one lesson
per week. The year 7 students will be making and designing a drawstring bag pencil case.

They will learn a variety of new skills from hand sewing to printing. They will also study a
different culture and learn more about what the textiles is all about generally.

Over the course of 18 weeks, with one lesson a week the students will be learning how to
create and make a soft toy. The theme for their project this year is ‘Monster Mash Up’.
During their project they will learn about recycling and the environment and how to
create a paper pattern from scratch. They will learn more about the design process and
more about the textiles industry (e-textiles and smart textiles).

The year 9 students also study textiles over the course of 18 weeks and are taught one
lesson per week. The project for year 9 students this will is ‘Not On the High Street’ and
they will be making a cover/case for a small electrical device such as an IPad mini or an ereader. They will be looking at Biomimicry and how the textiles industry develops ideas
from nature and the natural word. They will look at the work of other designers and use a
range of techniques to produce a functional practical item. They will be encouraged to be
as creative as possible and learn about: CAD-CAM and different kinds of production.

Assessment overview
Assessment of students will be on going, self, peer
and teacher assessments will be conducted at
relevant points throughout the period of learning.
Students will be teacher assessed at 6 week intervals
focusing on Theory- Safety, equipment, Key words
and meanings etc., Making – Skills and Subject
Knowledge respectively. Students learning will be
measured against the National Curriculum

During year 11 in textiles the students will be continuing with their controlled assessment
which contributes up to 60% of their overall grade. Once the students have completed
their development of their ideas and techniques they will make a sports related garment.
Students are encouraged to be as creative as possible and back up their ideas with the
relevant research. They will also be developing their theoretical knowledge of the subject
and will be required to do several homework tasks in relation to this.
