Overview
This guide has been developed from a document produced by the
Education for Practice Institute (EFPI), Charles Sturt University aimed at
identifying potential journals for publishing on practice-based education
(PBE) and workplace learning projects. The EFPI’s original document has
been amended to include journals relevant for publishing on academic
leadership and has been put together as a reference for publishing
articles related to the ALTC funded project: Building Leadership Capacity
for Work Integrated Learning: Developing Fieldwork Coordinators as
Academic Leaders. The Project Management Team acknowledges the
initial work undertaken by the EFPI.
These journals are predominantly higher education journals. Discipline
specific journals that publish PBE related work and on general leadership
are not comprehensively listed here.
The relevant journal titles are grouped by rank. For each journal, the
following information is provided:
 Journal name
 Url
 FoR Code
 Affiliations
 Publications per year
 Scope and audience
 Guidelines for authors
Journals are ranked from A* to C. The complete list of all ranked journals

3. Leadership Quarterly

Affiliation
International Leadership Association
Publications per year 4
Scope and audience
Disciplines such as political science, organizational psychology and sociology are
becoming so specialized that, for scholars and lay persons alike, the study of
leadership is now highly fractional. Studies of US presidents in political science
seldom make reference to the psychological literature of chief executive officers.
Studies of school principals appear without attention to the impact of cultural
dynamics seen in cultural anthropology.
Management and administrative staff responsible for supervisory and executive
development need to scan 20 to 30 journals across many disciplines to keep current
in the study of leadership.
This journal brings together a focus on leadership for scholars, consultants,
practicing managers, executives and administrators, as well as those numerous
university faculty members across the world who teach leadership as a college
course. It provides timely publication of leadership research and applications and has
a global reach. It also focuses on yearly reviews of a broad range of leadership topics
on a rotating basis and emphasizes cutting edge areas through special issues.

Scope and audience
The Oxford Review of Education is a well established journal with an extensive
international readership. It is committed to deploying the resources of a wide range
of academic disciplines in the service of educational scholarship, and the Editors
welcome articles reporting significant new research as well as contributions of a
more analytic or reflective nature. The membership of the editorial board reflects
these emphases, which have remained characteristic of the Review since its
foundation. The Review seeks to preserve the highest standards of professional
scholarship in education, while also seeking to publish articles which will be of
interest and utility to a wider public, including policy makers. Partly for that reason
it dedicates a considerable number of its issues, normally two each year, to special
topics; for such issues a guest editor is often invited and contributions are sought
from acknowledged experts in the field under review. Papers submitted to the
Oxford Review of Education are read by two referees whose comments guide the
Editors towards their final decision. The editorial board meets twice a year and
takes responsibility for the general development of the Journal.

Scope and audience
The Review of Educational Research (RER) publishes critical, integrative reviews of
research literature bearing on education. Such reviews should include
conceptualizations, interpretations, and syntheses of literature and scholarly work in
a field broadly relevant to education and educational research. RER encourages the
submission of research relevant to education from any discipline, such as reviews of
research in psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, political science, economics,
computer science, statistics, anthropology, and biology, provided that the review
bears on educational issues. RER does not publish original empirical research unless
it is incorporated in a broader integrative review. RER will occasionally publish
solicited, but carefully refereed, analytic reviews of special topics, particularly from
disciplines infrequently represented.

Scope and audience
Studies in Higher Education welcomes empirically based, reflective and synoptic
articles dealing with any aspect of higher education, approached from any
perspective or discipline. A key criterion for publication is that articles should be
written in an accessible, but rigorous, style that is likely to engage those without a
specialist interest in the topic being discussed. As Studies in Higher Education is an
international journal, it is also important that authors engage with relevant literature
from other countries, and explain, where appropriate, the national context for their
research.

Normally between 5000 and 7000 words, articles should be double spaced, with
ample margins. Each article should be accompanied by a summary of 100-150 words
on a separate sheet. All pages should be numbered.

Scope and audience
Higher Education Quarterly publishes articles concerned with policy, strategic
management and ideas in higher education. A substantial part of its contents is
concerned with reporting research findings in ways that bring out their relevance to
senior managers and policy makers at institutional and national levels, and to
academics who are not necessarily specialists in the academic study of higher
education.
13 | P a g e
Higher Education Quarterly also publishes papers that are not based on empirical
research but give thoughtful academic analyses of significant policy, management or
academic issues.
Guidelines for authors
http://www.wiley.com/bw/submit.asp?ref=0951-5224&site=1
It is important that authors appreciate the international nature of the readership of
Higher Education Quarterly. This has three implications.
First, the paper has to be of interest to a broad readership, which means that (a) the
paper draws on international examples, or (b) reports some international
comparative research, or (c) if country specific, explains how developments in one
country have been informed by international developments, or (d) how
developments or research in one country has implications beyond its borders. The
aim is to provide readers with information about and lessons from ideas and
practices that are transportable from other contexts.
Second, the paper should avoid parochial references or assume that the readership
will understand the processes used in a specific institution, or agency or be familiar
with the higher education system in a given country. Localised abbreviations or
taken-for-granted notions should not be cited without explanation. Some words are
ambiguous and should be used with care. 'Faculty' in the UK, for example, is an
organisational unit of a university, in the US it means, what in the UK would be called
the academic staff. 'School' rarely means a University in the UK, unlike in the US. So
it is incumbent on authors to be clear about terminology. Third, the journal rarely
publishes case studies of programmes or single institutions.
Papers should be original. If there is an overlap with material published elsewhere,
details should be given. Articles would normally be 4000-6000 words and should
include an abstract of 100-150 words.

Scope and audience
Higher Education Review is an academic journal devoted to the radical examination
of post school education. It is aimed at all those concerned with education after
school - academic staff, students, researchers and administrators in institutions and
government.
14 | P a g e

It is "probably the liveliest of the current British journals" in higher education
(Michael Shattock, Times Higher Education Supplement.)
World interest:
For more than 40 years, numerous institutions in the United States, Canada,
Australia, Japan, India and elsewhere have discovered the value of Higher Education
Review and subscribe to it.
 It is one of the '12 English language journals judged by respondents to a
recent questionnaire to be helpful to comparative higher education' listed in
Comparative Higher Education: Sources of Information by Robert O Berdahl
and George Altomare, International Council for Educational Development.
 Ranked 11th out of 67 higher education journals on both esteem and quality
indicators in a study conducted by the University of Newcastle Australia
Problem based:
Higher Education Review is committed to a problem-based epistemology. In all
countries there is an urgent need to formulate the problems of post school
education, to propose alternative solutions and to test them. The policy and practice
of governments and institutions require constant scrutiny. New policies and ideas
are needed in all forms of post school education as new challenges arise.
Guidelines for authors
http://www.highereducationreview.com/contributions.html
Major articles should generally be between 5,000 and 10,000 words. Notes, which
have the character of signed editorials, are between 1000 and 2,500 words long.
Articles should carry an abstract of about 100 words outlining their subject matter,
together with a short designation of the author.

Submit to the journal
As a guide, articles should be between 2,000 and 5,000 words in length. A title of not
more than eight words should be provided.
All papers should now be submitted via the ScholarOne Manuscripts online
submission system.
Editorial objectives
To provide those interested in the effective management of the educational process
with a broad overview of developments and best practice in the field, with particular
reference to how new ideas can be applied worldwide. The journal will seek to
contain material relating to innovation in educational management across the
spectrum, the development of educational delivery mechanisms, and the creation of
an environment in which the management of resources provides the most efficient
outputs achievable on an international basis to allow the sharing of new initiatives.
It is our intention to maintain a sound balance between theory and practice.
Contributors are encouraged to spell out the practical implications of their work for
those involved in the management of education. Articles based on experiences and

Scope and audience
The aim of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education (popularly
known as QSE) is to enhance the practice and theory of qualitative research in
education, with “education” defined in the broadest possible sense, including nonschool settings. QSE publishes peer-reviewed empirical research employing a variety
of qualitative methods and approaches, such as ethnographic observation and
interviewing, grounded theory, life history, case study, curriculum criticism, policy
studies, narrative, ethnomethodology, social and educational critique,
phenomenology, deconstruction, genealogy, autoethnography, etc. In addition,
innovative or provocative approaches to qualitative research as well as the way
research is reported are encouraged.
Theoretical papers are also welcome. We publish discussions of epistemology,
methodology, or ethics of qualitative research from a range of perspectives,
including (but not limited to) interpretivism, constructivism, critical theory,
feminism, and race-based, lesbian/gay/bi/transgender (including queer theory), and
poststructural ones. Furthermore, there is a strong interest in qualitative research

Papers are evaluated on the following points: Form: writing style and readability,
logical development, appropriate length, appropriateness of author's stated
objectives to treatment as defined below. Content: significance to JHE readers.
Additional criteria are based upon the following manuscript orientations: as a
research paper, as a technical paper, as a professional practice paper, as a literature
review, and as a policy paper. It should be emphasized that the editors respond most
favorably to manuscripts that evidence both a freshness of vision and a vitality that
may be informed by, but certainly go beyond, methodological qualities, and that are
in congruence with our publishing goals and directions. The most effective approach
in learning about our interests is to read previous issues of the journal. We expect
that authors, the journal, and the field will develop through the publication process.

the theory of educational development, with the goal of improving the quality of
higher education internationally.
The editors welcome original contributions on any aspect of academic development
in higher and other post-school education (including staff development, educational
development, instructional development and faculty development) and closely
related topics.
This journal will keep readers informed of best practice and current thinking
worldwide.
Guidelines for authors
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/journal.asp?issn=1360-144X&linktype=44
The main criteria for acceptance of all types of submissions are that they make a
contribution to the knowledge, understanding and/or practice in the field and are
not currently under submission anywhere else. Papers that describe an academic
development practice, even if it is very innovative, are normally not published.
Contributions must be of international interest. Authors can achieve this in several
ways. Ideas and practice can be introduced from more than one country. A
contribution may be based in practice in one country, or even one institution, and
accompanied by commentaries from colleagues in other countries. Or, a
contribution may be contextualised with reference to issues of concern to
educational developers worldwide as evidenced in the scholarly literature, such as
institutional change, and the nature or role of educational development. Other
approaches to addressing the interests of an international audience will also be
welcomed.

Scope and audience
The purpose of the International Journal of Educational Development is to foster
critical debate about the role that education plays in development. IJED seeks both
to develop new theoretical insights into the education-development relationship and
new understandings of the extent and nature of educational change in diverse
settings. It stresses the importance of understanding the interplay of local, national,
regional and global contexts and dynamics in shaping education and development.
Orthodox notions of development as being about growth, industrialisation or
poverty reduction are increasingly questioned. There are competing accounts that
28 | P a g e
stress the human dimensions of development. The notion of development itself is
highly contested, both as a theoretical construct and in its policy and programme
manifestations. Education is prominent in approaches to and critiques of
development. Here too perspectives vary. Education is expected to promote
competitiveness and productivity; reduce inequality, poverty and disease; mitigate
conflict and crisis; and promote human capability and achieve social justice. At the
same time, education is also criticised for fostering hostility; entrenching difference;
jeopardising local values and culture; and for its own use of control and violence.
The International Journal of Educational Development is concerned with education in
its broadest sense, including informal and non-formal modes, and skills
development. IJED is primarily interested in studies that are focused on lower and
middle income settings. It also considers papers that look at the relationship
between education and development in other contexts or at the role that developed
countries play in education and development through their policies and practices of
aid and trade.

Scope and audience
A journal addressed to leaders, managers, researchers and policy makers in the field
of higher education institutional management and policy.
Covering practice and policy in the field of system and institutional management
through articles and reports on research projects of wide international scope.
First published in 1977 under the title International Journal of Institutional
Management in Higher Education, then Higher Education Management from 1989 to
2001, it appears three times a year.
Guidelines for authors
The journal is primarily devoted to the needs of those involved with the
administration and study of institutional management in higher education. Articles
should be concerned, therefore, with issues bearing on the practical working and
policy direction of higher education. Contributions should, however, go beyond mere
description of what is, or prescription of what ought to be, although both descriptive
and prescriptive accounts are acceptable if they offer generalisations of use in
contexts beyond those being described. Whilst articles devoted to the development
of theory for its own sake will normally find a place in other and more academically
based journals, theoretical treatments of direct use to practitioners will be
considered.
Contributions to the Higher Education Management and Policy Journal should be
submitted in either English or French, and all articles are received on the
understanding that they have not been published elsewhere.

Scope and audience
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is an open, peerreviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Center for
Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University to be an international vehicle
for articles, essays, and discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning
(SoTL) and its applications in higher/tertiary education today. All submissions
undergo a double-blind peer-review process.
SoTL is a key way to improve teaching effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and
the continuous transformation of academic cultures and communities. Through
research questions and methodologies applied to teaching and learning, the making
public of that research and its results so that it can be analyzed and critiqued, and
through the constructing of an available, growing body of knowledge,
understanding, and wisdom about the teaching and learning processes and
outcomes, college and university teaching is seen as a serious intellectual activity
that can be evidence and outcome based.

Publications per year 4
Scope and audience
Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies publishes high-quality, peerreviewed research articles on leadership and organizational studies, focusing in
particular on the intersection of these two areas of study. JLOS aims to provide
scholarly understanding of the effective application of leadership and other issues in
an organizational context. In other words, the journal investigates all aspects of
organizations/management (primarily leadership, but also organizational behavior,
strategy, and human resource management). Unlike journals that focus only on
leadership or only on organization and management, JLOS coalesces these areas of
study into a coherent whole.
Though JLOS primarily publishes research findings derived from testing theory-driven
hypothesis through strong methodologies, the journal also publishes value-added
theoretical and cutting-edge application articles. Articles in JLOS apply to both the
researcher and the professional, and in all types of articles, special attention should
be given to practical implications. The Journal also encourages international
implications and cross-cultural studies as they relate to leadership and organizational
studies.
Guidelines for authors
The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies (JLOS) is published quarterly to
advance the knowledge and practice of leadership and organizations. JLOS deals with
all aspects of leadership and organizations. Our intent is to serve as a forum for the
expression of theory, research and practice, with special emphasis given to emerging
ideas, issues, trends, and innovations. An issue that deals with leadership and/or the
functioning of organizations is appropriate for JLOS. This could include such diverse
39 | P a g e
topics or organizational settings as: civic, grassroots, corporate, non-profit,
philanthropic, educational, international, political, or military.
FORMAT
As a matter of editorial policy, we will not decline to review (or return without
review) any manuscript submitted solely on the basis of format. However, it is our
expectation that final versions of papers submitted for publication will follow the
style of the American Psychological Association in terms of headings, referencing,
etc.
INITIAL SUBMISSIONS
Manuscripts submitted for publication consideration should be typed on a standard
size paper (8.5 by 11) and should be double-spaced throughout. These manuscripts
should include a title page that includes the title of the article and appropriate
contact information for the author. The second page should repeat the title of the
article and include a brief (not to exceed 100 words) abstract. We recognize and
understand that sometimes length of the article does not reflect value or content.
There is, therefore, no minimum length. However, complete manuscripts (including
references) normally should not exceed 25-30 pages in length. Please submit your
article through the Sage Publications website, http://jlo.sagepub.com/ . Click on the
"SAGETRACK" link or visit http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jlos to begin the
submission process.
REVIEW
Manuscripts receive a screening review for appropriateness and then at least two
reviews in the process. Authors will receive acknowledgement of receipt of
manuscripts and will (under normal circumstances) be notified within 60 days of the
results of the review. If reviewers recommend revision, authors will receive a copy of
suggested changes and a timeline for re-submission of their manuscripts.
