We learn time zones because they are a practical concern for all people who fly. The following questions
will take a bit of time but will help you practice time zone skills you’ll need in real life!
31. A flight leaves Seattle at 10:08 AM and arrives in Phoenix at 1:12 PM. What was the actual flying time of the
plane? _____________________________________________________________________________
32. A flight leaves O’Hare in Chicago at 2:12 PM. One hour and twenty-eight minutes later it lands in Atlanta. A
passenger on that flight then has a forty-five minute layover before its flight continues on to Tampa, where it lands
forty-six minutes later. At what time does the passenger set his watch when the plane lands in Tampa?

33. A plane leaves Boston at 7:06 AM headed for Chicago, where it lands two hours and twenty-two minutes later.
A passenger on that flight then has only thirty-five minutes to catch TWA flight 2011, which is scheduled to arrive
in Denver one hour and forty-eight minutes later. At what time in Denver will flight 2011 arrive, if it is on time?

34. A flight leaves St. Louis at 8:45 AM and is scheduled to land in New Orleans one hour and forty-eight minutes
later. What time does the plane actually land in New Orleans if it is eighteen minutes late? __________________
35. A passenger on American Airlines flight 706 leaves Miami at 8:15 AM bound for Las Vegas. The first leg of
his journey has a scheduled flight time to Dallas of two hours and thirty-seven minutes, but the flight arrives
seventeen minutes late. A passenger on that flight had a scheduled layover of forty-three minutes. He then
catches American Airlines flight 82 that continued on to Las Vegas, where it was supposed to land one hour and
fifty minutes later. But Flight 82 is also late, this time by twenty-three minutes. At what time does the passenger
set his watch to have the correct time in Las Vegas? ______________________________________
36. G.W. Timmons, who lives in Philadelphia, has a business meeting in Los Angeles scheduled for 2:00 PM at a
conference room in a hotel near the airport. He catches a plane in Philadelphia at 8:06 AM on a flight to Chicago
that lasts one hour and forty-seven minutes. He has a scheduled thirty-five minute layover in Chicago before
catching another flight on to Los Angeles. However, his plane is delayed in taking off, and he arrives in Chicago
just after five minutes before his connecting flight departs. Timmons races to Gate 46… but too late… and too
bad for Timmons! Flight 114 has just left the ground… on time! The next flight leaves in another hour and five
minutes. The airline officials place Timmons on the flight… which leaves on time for a four hour and two-minute
flight. Flight 1028 (Timmons’ new flight) arrives twelve minutes ahead of schedule. How much time does
Timmons have to get out of the airport, get to the hotel and prepare himself for this all-important meeting?
