Its primary purpose is to acquaint students with an introductory insight on the history and development of English language as well as historical and cultural aspects surrounds it. There are nine chapters in the book organized in a logical and practical sequence, with a chapter focusing on an important topic of research such as; dialects and standard English – the past, dialects and standard English – the present, regional accent and received pronunciation, spoken and written English, learning to talk, variety in spoken English I: grammar and vocabulary, variety in spoken English Ii conversation, variety in written English I: reporting news, and variety in written English II: style. In compiling the book, the writer borrowed generously from books written by foreign authors, to whom proper reference is made. The author extends his thanks and appreciation to all of them.
