January 21, 2012 Workshop/course Description: This fun and highly interactive workshop will instruct educational interpreters as to how to integrate non-manual (facial adverbs/adjectives) into their interpretations *in conjunction with English articulation* frequently engaged in educational interpretations (lexical specificity, etc). The workshop will also provide training pertaining to the integration of language expansion (focus) features in educational interpretations. Participants will: 1) Analyze sign-language speakers and identify specific adverbs and adjectives produced on the face, 2) Incorporate these facial grammatical features within educational interpretations, 3) Learn how language users integrate discourse expansions for topical clarity/focus, 4) Engage in classroom discourse analysis (via media) to determine when to integrate focal features, 5) Render interpretations integrate expansion/focal features Presenter: Kevin Williams M.S. Kevin T. Williams holds his M.S. in Teaching Interpreting from Western Maryland College, Westminster, Maryland. For over 18 years he was employed by Boys Town National Research Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, as their Sign Communication and Curriculum Specialist and is the Director of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Diagnostic Center. While at Boys Town, and in collaboration with Dr. Brenda Schick (University of Colorado-Boulder), Williams developed the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), a diagnostic instrument for educational interpreters and their employing schools/districts. Other projects engaged in by Williams’ during his tenure at Boys Town included serving as the producer for the Sign With Me parent sign language videotape curriculum and the Read With Me ASL storytelling series. Williams left Boys Town in 2005 and created the National Consortium on Educational Interpreting, an LLC founded to provide educational and diagnostic services for educational interpreters. He provided diagnostic evaluation services for the EIPA Dx Center and consulted nationally on issues related to inclusion and educational interpreting. In addition to EIPA cocreation, Williams also served as a content expert for the newly created RID/NAD NIC certification test. In the summer of 2008 Williams joined the faculty of the Rochester Institute of Technology, specifically the faculty of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Williams instructs in the area of interpretation and linguistics, teaching both at RIT and also on-line courses for the University of Nebraska, Omaha. He continues to serve as a diagnostic rater for the EIPA and travels extensively presenting on issues of educational interpretation, child language, inclusion, and ASL and English linguistics/structure. Kevin, and partner Andrew, have 2 sons, 4 dogs, 1 cat, 1 cockatoo, and one miniature horse. Life is NEVER dull in their home! .
