The 5th Annual SW 4-H Animal Science Challenge combines the best of skill-a-thon, educational, hands-on project workshops and project bowl into one remarkable event that will challenge any animal science enthusiast! Individuals are welcome to participate in the skill-a-thon and project workshops. This event will NOT fulfill your LQA&E certification as it has in the past. ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE TWO WORKSHOPS: WABASSO MEAT MARKET: Tour the local meat market and learn about how carcasses are divided into primal cuts and retails cuts. This is a great way to learn more about meat science. Led by Jay Waknitz, owner of Wabasso Meat Market. HEALTHY HORSES: There are many factors that play into keeping a horse healthy. Learn about the symptoms, cause, diagnosis and possible treatment of preventable diseases. Learn about maintaining a regular deworming schedule and vaccination programs. Led by Sam Welu, SDSU Animal Science Major. SEMEN COLLECTION: This workshop will demonstrate how semen is collected from rams (which is similar to other production animals). Examine the semen under a microscope. Learn about the freezing process and how the semen preserved for future use in artificial insemination or ET work. Led by Dr. Phil Gill, Riverside Vet Clinic. PASTURE MANAGEMENT: How can you best manage a prairie pasture? Learn about rest-rotational systems, mob stocking, weed control, native species identification, soil health and overall prairie management. Led by Judy Schulte, MN DNR Prairie Specialist TELLING THE AG STORY (SR. ONLY): Help young producers understand if producers and processors don’t tell their story, an opposing activist group will. Learn about telling your story and why it is important. Led by Christy Jackson, National Pork Producers Council. RECOGNIZING BASIC LIVESTOCK HEALTH PROBLEMS (JR. ONLY): What do you do if your heifer gets pinkeye, your barrow has an abscess, or your show lamb has pneumonia? Learn what signs to look for, how to diagnose, and how to treat common health issues in livestock and what products can be used in each species. Led by Dr. Michael Curley, District Veterinarian. If you have a project bowl team, you must provide scorekeepers to assist with the rounds each team participates in. Coaches, parents and volunteers from both teams are encouraged to work together to run each room efficiently and fairly. Burgers, beverages and snacks will be available for purchase. Please email 20 project bowl questions per team with answers & references to Trisha Sheehan (tsheehan@umn.edu) by February 1. If you do not submit questions there is an extra cost of $10 per team.
