Post-graduate education
The Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asphendiyarov was founded on April
20 , 1931. Sanzhar Dzhapharovich Asphendiyarov, who graduated the St. Petersburg Military Medical
Academy, was inaugurated as the first rector of the university. He was an eminent statesman, an
outstanding scientist and talented organizer.
KazNMU named after S.D. Asphendiyarov is one of the oldest universities in Kazakhstan and has a
national status. Today KazNMU is a flagship of medical education, combining not only educational, but
also medical and scientific researches.
After more than 80 years of its career, the university has rapidly built a high reputation not just in our
country, but has become well-known abroad.
Our university is one of the 18th Kazakh Universities signed the Magna Charta, that is a basis of the
Bologna Declaration.
The main mission of KazNMU is preparing competitive, harmoniously developed specialists, who
create ethical, highly qualified medical services and giving and enhancing knowledge in medicine and
pharmacy. The university, faculty and alumni are highly integrated into the global community of medical
professionals.
In accordance with the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Education" of 17.07.2009 postgraduate medical and pharmaceutical education includes residency, mastership and doctoral studies.
In the Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov training of scientific and
scientific-pedagogical personnel is conducted in residency, mastership and doctoral PhD, deeply training
medical specialists in clinical specialties - in residency.
The first admission to the master programme of KazNMU was in 2007 on a speciality: 6N1101 medicine (public health, health management), and accounted 16 masters, the first admission to the
residency was conducted in 2008, and accounted 32 doctors on 12 specialties. Training PhD in
KazNMU, is being held from 2010 and 3 persons were admitted to the doctoral studies on specialty:
6D110200 - public health.
In accordance with the new classificator of higher and post-graduate education specialities, introduced
from 01.09.2009. and new SOSE of mastership and doctoral PhD, SSE-2009 residency KazNMU named
after S.D.Asfendiyarov has obtained a license and now it conducts training in following specialties:

Training in doctoral programs is carried out in two directions:
 profile;
 research and pedagogic.
The duration of development of doctoral educational programme in each specialization continues for 3
years. Persons passed the profile educational programme of doctoral studies, are conferred the academic
degree’’Doctor of’’ (according to the chosen specialty.)
Persons passed the educational program of research and doctoral studies, are conferred the academic
degree ’’Doctor of Philosophy» (PhD) (according to the chosen specialty.)
Master's Programs training is carried out in two directions:
 profile;
 scientific and pedagogic
The duration of development of Master’s Educational Program continues:
 in profile training - 1-1.5 years;
 in scientific and pedagogical training for 2 years
Persons passed the profile educational programs and defended master's thesis, are conferred the
academic degree "Master of (in the chosen specialty.)
Persons passed the educational program of research and teaching graduate and defended master's thesis,
are conferred the academic degree "Master of Medical Sciences' (on the chosen specialty).
Residency
Residency (in the Republic of Kazakhstan) is a form of getting post-graduate profound medical
education on clinical specialties (from 2014 - obligatary for all clinical specialties)
The duration of residency educational programme is 2-4 years and .depends on the previous
specialization and training.

The purpose of residency is training doctors to independent work on rending highly specializied
medical aid in accordance with the principles of evidence medicine and the up-date achievements of
therapeutic diagnostic, pharmaceutical technologies. The main task of residency is the training highly
competitive professionals.
People mastered residency training programs and successfully passed the state attestation are
conferred a specialist qualification (according to the chosen speciality.)
Preparation of specialist doctors in residency conducted at 60 clinical bases of 48 clinical
departments. The study in residency realized by experienced teaching staff, which includes academics,
doctors, PhDs, doctors of the highest qualification.
