Dressage
Dressage is a French word which roughly
translates to "training". Dressage is the basic
training of all riding horses. Show jumpers,
Show Hacks and Pleasure horses will all
benefit from dressage training - dressage
training creates a horse that is more
comfortable, safe and pleasurable to ride.

The Friesian horse is
gentle, honest, sober,
high-mettled and clever. It
is descended from the
western European horse
that has been in general
use from the earliest days
on and that attained high
perfection in the Knight's
horse, the destrier.
A destrier is an historical
term for a knight's war
horse.

Galician Pony
Gg
The Galician Pony is found in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain.
This is a region with a very wet climate and numerous low
mountains. This breed is used for meat production and for riding.
Its size is between that of a pony and a normal horse. These
animals are very rugged and hardy.
8
Hungarian Warmblood
The breed stands 16 to 17.0 hands, and comes in all solid colors. The influence of
the Hungarian breeds produced a horse lighter and more elegant than its heavier
warmblood predecessors. The Hungarian Warmblood is a very beautiful horse of
noble bearing, animated action, exceptional intelligence, and disposition.

Icelandic
Because Iceland has no predators, but instead is a country with tremendous
environmental danger, such as quicksand, rock slides, rivers with changing
currents, the ability to assess a situation rather than the instinct to flee, have been
central in the survival of the horse. Therefore, these horses lack the “spookiness”
that characterizes most horses. Due perhaps to their lack of fear of living things,
they seek strong attachments to people and are quite nurturing and affectionate.

Jumper is where the horse and
rider memorize a course of about
10 jumps and remember a jump
off of about 6 jumpers.
They are given a reasonable time
limit to complete the course
without any faults (knocking rails,
refusing jumps, falling off, time
penalties). If the horse and rider
make it through the round
without any faults then they jump
the jump off.
The horse and rider that jump the
jump off the fastest with the least
amount of faults win.

Kabarda
The Kabardin horse, well-known since the 16th
century, is one of Russia’s “extreme” breeds - a
horse meant for living under extreme conditions.
Kk
Although the Kabardin is considered primarily
to be a saddle horse, it can also be used as a
pack horse, and for every sort of work in
harness. Mountaineers make hay on steep
slopes by hitching a couple of Kabardins into a
horse mower.
The Kabarda horse is well fitted for mountain
and stony terrain. It is considered to be the
best mountain horse. It can show a fair speed
and remarkable endurance.
Kabarda horses are kept in taboons (stables) and
transferred to mountain pastures in summer and
to the foothills area in winter.

Lipizzaner Stallions
Ll
The Lipizzan is a rare and
unique breed; its history and
culture is known worldwide.
The Walt Disney movie The
Miracle of the White
Stallions, depicting General
George S. Patton saving
them at the end of World
War II from certain
extinction, created an even
greater world-wide interest
in the Lipizzaner breed. Had
it not been for Patton, there
would be no Lipizzans today.

Morgan Horse
Today, Morgan horses are
much loved for their courage
and generosity, and for their
stylish appearance; they are
also greatly respected for their
strength, stamina and
intelligence. They are used as
mounts by police and military in
the US and Canada; as
'Roadsters' in harness races; as
stock horses in the West; as
show horses; and as pleasure
saddle and harness horses
throughout North America, and
various other countries.

Norwegian Fjord
Nn
The Norwegian Fjord's
strength, clean lines and
exceptionally adaptable nature
have made them equally well
suited to harness or saddle.
They can be ridden English or
Western, hunted, or driven in
shows, parades and down
country roads. Their mild
manner makes them an ideal
family horse, ridden or driven
as easily by the novice or
youngster as by the
knowledgeable adult horseman

Quarter Horse
Quarter Horse: A Breed of horse that is
especially fast for a quarter of a mile,
from which its name is derived. These
heavily muscled, compact horses could
run a short distance over a straightaway
faster than any other horse, and the
fastest were called Celebrated American
Quarter Running Horses by English
colonists in the 1600s. In 1940 a registry
was formed to preserve the breed which
officially became the American Quarter

Rocky Mountain Horse
Rocky Mountain Horse
Rr
Tradition has it that around the turn of the century
a young horse appeared in eastern Kentucky that
gave rise to a line of horses that have been prized
and treasured. Legend has it that a family traveling
East from "out west" stopped in a small eastern
Kentucky town and traded a young colt for
provisions. The horse demonstrated a natural fourbeat gait, was gentle and people-friendly, and was
bred to local saddle horses. This was the beginning
of the Rocky Mountain Horse. Years later, Sam
Tuttle, wanting to preserve the incredibly smooth
four-beat gait, gentle nature and strength of the
horse, further refined these characteristics and
produced Tobe who is recognized as the
foundation Rocky Mountain Horse.

Shagyas
Shagyas
Ss
The Shagya-Araber was developed in Hungary
as an outcross improvement for the AustroHungarian cavalry. Foundations of the breed
were desert bred Arabians and native
“Oriental” mares. Shagyas were used to add
Arabian thriftiness and nobility without
sacrificing size or bone.
Shagyas have the qualities necessary to be
ideal for dressage, jumping, endurance, and
hunting. They are eminently suitable to
perform as pleasure horses for the enjoyment
of the whole family.

Tennessee Walking Horse
Over one hundred years ago, in the Middle
Basin of Tennessee, a unique breed was
created - the Tennessee Walking Horse. The
Tennessee Walking Horse originates in the
Southern United States. They are named that
because of their unique “running walk”.
Tennessee Walking Horses have especially
long necks and stamina. They are very sweet
natured and gentle. The running walk is a
comfortable gait for long trail rides. Some are
seen in Western Riding disciplines, and
harness. Their stride is “elegant” as some call
it.

Ukrainian Saddle Horse
Ukrainian Saddle Horse
Uu
This breed group was developed in the studs
of the Ukraine since the war by crossing
Hungarian mares (Nonius, Furioso-Northstar
and Gidran) with Trakehner, Hanoverian and
Thoroughbred stallions. Particular value was
attached to individuals with a trace of Russian
Saddle horse blood.
Ukrainian Saddle horses preform well in
classic events, particularly in dressage. The
Soviet equestrians riding them have
repeatedly won or have been runners-up in
the highest-ranking competitions, such as the
Olympics and the World and European
Championships.
22
Vyatka also known as Vyatskata
The Vyatka is a rarely heard of breed that has
been in danger of extinction for several years.
It comes from the former Soviet Union.
They originated in the areas around Vyatka
and Obva river basins of the former USSR and
have probably been influenced by both the
Klepper and Konik ponies, while almost
certainly being a descendant of the Tarpan.
With the development of industry and
transportation and with the intensification of
agriculture, the numbers of the Vyaka were
sharply reduced; most of the purebred mares
were mated with heavy draughters and
trotters. The 1980 horse breeding survey in
Udmurtia and the Kirov region showed that
the total number of horses classified as
Vyatka was about 2000. No stud breeds the
Vyatka. The breed needs protection.

Welara Pony
Welara Pony
Ww
The Welara is a new pony breed establish in
1981 by a group of ranchers in southern
California. It resulted by crossing the Arabian
horse and Welsh pony.
Lady Wentworth was the first person known to
breed this pony. She used the stallion
Skowronek on mares imported from the Coed
Coch Welsh stud farm in North Wales.
This pony exhibits the best qualities of both
the Arabian and Welsh breeds. Welara ponies
are characterized by their beauty, gentle
disposition, quick, eager intelligence, and
versatility.
If pure Arabs are too small to meet
requirements for the Arabian stud book, then
they are accepted.

Yonaguni
The Yonaguni is a small native pony of
the southwest islands of Japan. In 1996
there were about seventy-five living
Yonaguni ponies on East and North
Ranches on Yonaguni Island, located on
the west side of the Yaeyama Islands.
As technology has improved, horses have
become less important and the
population of all horse breeds in Japan
has been drastically reduced. Once of
great importance in the daily lives of the
islanders, today the Yonaguni may be
seen on only a few ranches and has
become a precious cultural asset.
