In the School of Information & Library Studies at University College Dublin, the full time PhD programme is a
3 or 4 year commitment. This includes studying 12 months each calendar year while a student. The part-time
PhD programme is a 6 year commitment. For the PhD, extensions for completion beyond 4 years of full time
study or 6 years part-time study are not guaranteed.
The nominal time for completion of the MLitt is 2 years full time, or 4 years part-time. For the MLitt, extensions
for completion beyond 2 years full time study or 4 years part-time study are not guaranteed.

II. Applicant statement
Please include, as described below, motivation, research interests and two proposed supervisors.
1. Motivation (~800 words). Please state your motivations and commitment for pursuing an MLitt/PhD degree.
How will acquiring an MLitt/PhD degree fulfill your personal and career goals?
2. Research Interests (~600 words). Please discuss the area(s) of research in information and library science
that interest you the most, and why. How might you go about expanding your knowledge of these areas? How
might you go about conducting studies to investigate these research interests?
Please also discuss what you hope to learn about the research process while pursuing a MLitt/PhD, and why.
3. Two Proposed Supervisors. Indicate two potential supervisors for your research. Please examine
http://www.ucd.ie/sils/staff/ for the academic staff’s research interests; this is not a final statement on who you
will be working with in your research studies, rather, it is expected that you will work with our academic staff in
SILS on research to mutually decide the best supervisor.
