Colonel John Stuart Elementary

Code of Conduct

Mission Statement

In an atmosphere that values the promotion of mutual respect, Colonel John Stuart Element

School works together to provide an open, secure and caring educational environment for all students.

Commitment Statement

We will act upon our common vision and experiences to further develop a school environment that is positive, preventive, predictable and effective to create a safe, healthy and caring place to learn and teach. We will do this by developing and implementing a Positive Effective

Behavior System (PEBS) specific to Colonel John Stuart Elementary School that will contribute to establishing positive behavior as the norm in our school and by the Provincial School Code Of

Conduct.

Positive Effective Behavior System (PEBS)

We will focus our attention on creating and maintaining primary systems of behavioral supports that will improve our learning environment for all students, staff, parents, guardians, volunteers and visitors and any persons who has contact with students and staff by reducing problem behavior and increasing desired behavior. It is our goal that every student, staff member and parent/guardians will know, without doubt, what is expected at Colonel John

Stuart Elementary School in terms of respecting Self, Others, Learning and the Environment.

The principles that guide us in our effective behavior system are based on the following:

Behavior is predictable

If it’s predictable it’s preventable

Behavior is learned

 Behavior can be taught

We will implement positive strategies by teaching and reinforcing/rewarding behavioral expectations according to the Provincial Code of Conduct. We will be proactive and reward appropriate behavior. We will promote appropriate behavior in a supportive manner by directly teaching and re-teaching our students what is expected of them. We will respond to unacceptable behaviour in a progressive manner. It is important to note that responding to unacceptable behaviour will reflect an individual approach to discipline according to age, stage of development and special needs, severity, frequency and duration of the behaviour.

Our Colonel John Stuart Elementary school “PEBS Matrix”, as well as the Provincial School

Code of Conduct Acceptable Standard of Behaviour and the Provincial School Code of Conduct of acceptable and unacceptable behaviours can be viewed below, in which you will see examples of proactive strategies to promote desired behaviors to occur.
