THFI Special School
Education became the most powerful instrument of social change and it is strongly
amended the right to education without the
categorization of abled and disabled. This
has been the thriving motive for Dr. Jacob
Roy to set up a special school for the
disabled children during 1990. We have
enrolled for last year 67 children of multiple
disabilities of cerebral palsy, Autism and
Mental retardation, Down syndrome etc,
with a ratio of 1:7 teachers per student. We
have divided the children in to pre-primary,
primary, secondary, pre-vocational and
vocational classes based on their age and
caliber. To sooth the life of these special
children, they are exposed in to the areas of
vocational training besides daily curricular activities. The children are trained to produce

paper plate, phenol, and carry bag under the supervision of a trained vocational teacher with
a sole objective to make them self reliant and have a comprehensive rehabilitation. We also
avail the services of physiotherapist, speech in order to have a ease of movement, position
correction, also to overcome communication difficulties, eating and swallowing problems etc.
The children also take part in the cultural and sports events to improve the social skills and
also to tap out the shrouded skills and based on the taste they are provided the training. The
school also is having a BAND in order to improve a basic quest for the music. The students
participated in the sports meet organized by Lions club of Irinjanalkuda and majority of the
children won the prize in the event. The students were also carried out for a picnic to have a
refreshing mood prior to the closing of the academic year.
SPARSH
THFI has started a separate wing adjacent to the
schools in order to rehabilitate the special children
after the period of their schooling to win the bread
for life. The child ren are trained to make paper
plate, phenoil, soap powder, jewelry making carry
bag etc, and the drawn profit deposited in the
separated account of the children. There is one full
time dedicated vocational instructor supported by a
helper to support the children to get along with the
activities.
OAE& BERA
It has been noticed that good number of
new born babies having hearing defect are
identified at later stage. As a result high risk of
hearing loss is found among the children. To curtail
the prevailing situation THFI commenced OAE
(Autoaccoustic
Emission)/BERA
(Brainstem
Evoked
Response
Audiometory)
screening
programme to identify the chance of hearing loss
among the newborn babies in and around
Kunnamkulam. This service is presently available
at all major hospitals as not to leave out any child
with hearing impairment. These children identified
will be referred for further clinical examination and to equip them with proper hearing aid.
The audiologist along with technician visit the hospitals on allotted days. Those who sure
negative if so found any fault would be referred for further clinical examination after BERA
and subsequent treatment of hearing aids.
