USHE Foreign Language Requirements for AA/BA School AA University of Utah Utah State University BA Successful completion of one foreign language course1. at the 1020-level or higher (or its equivalent). Students whose native language is not English may use 2. English to meet the Associate of Arts language requirement by completing all of the requirements for Associate of Science degree and one of the following: (1) achieve a score of 500 or higher on the Test of 3. English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or (2) successfully complete a minimum of 10 semester hours of ESOL 1000 or above numbered coursework 4. 1. 2. Weber State University Foreign language or ASL (American Sign Language) requirement which may be met by one of the following: a. Documentation of a proficiency level of “Novice High” or better through an examination administered by the WSU Foreign Language Department or through an b. examination by a recognized testing agency. Completion of WSU foreign language course 1020 with c. a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. d. Completion of any WSU foreign language course at a level beyond the first year with a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. Documentation of three years of the same language completed in high school with a minimum grade of “B”. e. Documentation of a minimum proficiency level in American Sign Language through an examination administered by the American Sign Language/Interpreting program at SLCC. The signer f. must “demonstrate proficiency in temporal aspect, spatial agreement and in describing things around g. her/him and the deaf culture.” Completion of WSU American Sign Language course 1020 with a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. a. Utah Valley University Minimum 8 credits in the same Foreign Language or application of foreign language challenge credit. At the University of Utah, students must demonstrate proficiency that is equivalent to two years of foreign language study in order to meet the Foreign Language Requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Upon completion of the foreign language requirement, students are assessed for their ability to comprehend and produce the foreign language in speaking and in writing and for their understanding of foreign language learning as a life-long endeavor that enhances their education in the Humanities. The actual approval of the FL portion of the BA award is left up to the department. Students can fulfill the requirement in a number of ways. Demonstration of proficiency in one foreign language by successful completion of one course at the 2020-level or higher (or its equivalent). Or Demonstration of proficiency in American Sign Language by successful completion of American Sign Language IV (COMD 4920 ) and Socio-Cultural Aspects of Deafness (COMD 4780 ), and by passing an exit interview. Or Demonstration of proficiency in two foreign languages by successful completion of the 1020 course level in one language and the 2010 course level in the second language (or its equivalent). Or Completion of an upper-division (3000-level or higher) foreign language grammar or literature course requiring the 2020 course level (or its equivalent) as a prerequisite. Conversation courses cannot be considered for satisfying this requirement. For nonnative English-speaking students only, the following options are available: Successful completion of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) program for international students. Or TOEFL, Michigan, or IELI placement scores high enough to meet the University admission criteria. Option 1 – Foreign Language One of the following Documentation of a proficiency level of “Intermediate Low” or better through an examination administered by the WSU Foreign Language Department or through an examination by a recognized testing agency. Completion of WSU foreign language course 2020 with a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. Completion of any upper-division WSU foreign language course with a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. Students for whom English is a second language may meet the BA foreign language requirement by: verifying their proficiency in their (non-English) native language in cooperation with the Foreign Language Department and verifying their proficiency in English as a Second language by passing the ESL Special Examination. Documentation of a minimum proficiency level in American Sign Language through an examination administered by the American Sign Language/Interpreting Program at Salt Lake Community College. The signer must produce and maintain American Sign Language with “continuity and precision.” Completion of WSU American Sign Language course 2020 with a grade of “C” or higher, or comparable transfer credit. Completion of twelve semester-hours of foreign language. Refer to the Foreign Language section of this catalog for additional information on obtaining foreign language credit. Option 2 – Foreign Language with Language Arts Note: This option is only available when specified by the major course requirements. Completion of at least six semester-hours of foreign language with further course work up to six semester-hours in the language arts beyond the composition requirement in the general education core. Language arts course work may include literature, creative writing, rhetoric, music composition, etc. Students should refer to the major for specific requirements. The Bachelor of Music degree and Bachelor of Music Education degree requirement is for two semesters of foreign language chosen from French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The requirement may be satisfied by taking two semesters of the same language, or one semester each of two different languages. Students must complete 16 credit hours of course work from one language to include the 1010, 1020, 2010 and 202G levels, or transferred equivalents. Some ESL course work may be used to fulfill this requirement. Southern Utah University Complete 8 hours of one foreign language, beyond the 1010 level. All foreign language classes must be completed with a “C” grade or higher. Dixie State College of Utah Snow College 8 credits in a single foreign language (by coursework, examination, or vertical credit) Salt Lake Community College The learning outcomes for the Associate of Arts Degree are identical to the Associate of Science with the addition of 4 credit hours in one foreign language numbered 1020 or above. The language requirement for non-native English speaking students entering on Track 2 may be met by completing each of the required English as a Second Language courses with a grade of B (3.0) or better. International non-native English speaking students entering on Track 1(TOEFL IBT score of 63 or better) also satisfy the foreign language requirement for the AA degree. General Education for all Associate of Arts (AA) students includes a Language requirement. The requirement can be fulfilled by any 1020 course (Beginning Language II). These courses are listed as (LN). This requirement may also be fulfilled by taking the second-year courses 2010 and/or 2020. For students already proficient in a language, it is possible to enroll directly in more advanced courses with instructor approval. Upon completion of that course with a grade of B or higher, students can petition for credit for the first-year courses bypassed. Other options may be available, contact the Humanities, Language and Culture Department. Native speakers/naturalized citizens are not allowed to take first-year courses in their native language. At the discretion of the Department Chair, 2000-level ENGL courses may be used to fulfill the Associate of Arts (AA) Language requirement for International native speakers if students have taken ESL courses or if students can demonstrate college-level experience in their native language. A minimum of 16 semester credit hours in one foreign language. Documentation of language proficiency through an examination administered by the Foreign Languages & Philosophy department or through an examination by a recognized testing agency. ESL students must verify their proficiency in their native language and English as a second language by either passing and ESL exit test or passing the ESL special examination. Documentation of a minimum proficiency level in American Sign Language through an examination administered by any accredited institution of higher education. The signer must produce and maintain American Sign Language with continuity and precision. 16 credits in a single foreign language (by coursework, examination or vertical credit)
