CLASS TITLE:
LEAD VEHICLE AND EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, plan and coordinate a wide variety of skilled
diagnose, repair and maintenance of the District’s fleet of all vehicles, devices and related
equipment for transportation, grounds custodial, maintenance, horticulture and law enforcement.
Train and provide work direction to the Transportation Assistant and student worker(s), when
available. Provide recommendations for development, establishment and purchase of resources
including off-site vendors, contracts, warranties, services, equipment, vehicles & repairs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Monitor, diagnose and perform journey level repair and maintenance including
troubleshooting of district vehicles and equipment. Perform welding, brazing, soldering and
regular routine service on College-owned tractors, machinery and equipment. Diagnose a
variety of vehicle computers and computerized sensors; replace faulty components and
parts as needed. (E)

Provide ongoing direction, training and guidance to Transportation Assistant; oversee
preventative maintenance programs and inspections. Daily review online service requests
for transportation function and assign work to be performed. (E)
3.
Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program for District equipment and
vehicles; inspect trucks, autos and other mechanical equipment; maintain records of work
performed, parts used and time required for each piece of machinery and equipment. (E)
4.
Perform safety checks and inspections daily on District trucks, passenger vehicles, police
vehicle fleet, and other mechanical equipment; adjust, repair and replace parts as
necessary; assure vehicles meet state and local standards for public transportation and
safety compliance. Maintain smog certificates; repair and maintain emission control
components on a regular basis. Submit smog certification compliant annual transmittals to
Bureau of Automotive Repair. (E)
5.
Monitor manufacturer’s service bulletins and safety recalls; implement upgrades to vehicles
and equipment as needed. (E)
6.
Coordinate and schedule fuel deliveries for District vehicles and equipment, monitor and
evaluate fuel used. Schedule and correct any compliance findings noted from maintenance
and testing of fuel dispensing station as well as any Air Pollution Control District
inspections; retain all inspection and maintenance records. (E)
7.
Maintain shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition; purchase
materials and spare parts as required.
8.
Determine salvage status of retired vehicles and equipment; maintain vendor lists; submit
budget items and inventory. Make recommendation on police vehicle and equipment
retirement. Research all requested equipment/vehicles and indicate the best products and
options. Estimate long-term maintenance and repair costs. Submit final recommendation

on brand, model, specify options by code and review price quotes for comparison.
9.
Determine the need for outside assistance in major repairs involving district-owned vehicles
and equipment; coordinate work by outside vendors (whether performed on or off site),
seeking approval as necessary.
10.
Instruct District personnel in proper use and general maintenance of vehicles and
equipment as well as assist Director of Risk Management with cart and forklift training, as
needed.
11.
Dispose of hazardous waste such as solvents, used oil filters, used oil and used antifreeze.
Perform related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO:
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical and computerized defects and faulty parts and
components.
Operate equipment used in repairing or servicing of vehicles.
Operate a wide variety of equipment and machinery including arc and gas welders, computer
diagnostic equipment, scopes, digital meters, tire changing and balancing machines,
tractors, motor vehicles, electric carts, lawnmowers, edgers, blowers and power hand tools.
Read and use mechanical diagrams, repair manuals and parts catalogues.
Project and evaluate cost effectiveness of maintenance and repair work.
Maintain routine records. Perform simple data entry of vehicle maintenance records.
Plan and organize work.
Analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
Work independently with little direction.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work cooperatively with others.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Enforce safety and liability issues with unsafe vehicles and equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years journey-level experience

in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy and light gasoline, diesel and battery-powered
equipment and electrical systems. One year of automotive or trade school education in automotive
equipment repair
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California class 2 and 3 driver's licenses. District-approved DMV driving record.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide work direction, training and guidance to Transportation Assistant and student workers.
CONTACTS:
District personnel, vendors, police, highway patrol, applicable state and federal agencies.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate to heavy physical labor with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50
pounds; occasional to frequent pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to hundred pounds;
frequent to constant bending, kneeling and stooping; manual dexterity required to operate
equipment safely; frequent to constant repetitive use of hands, shoulders, wrists and forearms
for extended periods of time while keying maintenance records into the computer and/or
working on equipment or vehicles; ability to operate motor vehicles and electric carts to test
drive and/or travel to and from a variety of locations on and off campus.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions
and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals from
diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to understand and follow verbal and/or
written directions; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently
while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in indoor auto shop environment; subject to intermittent contacts with and
interruptions by individuals in person and/or by phone; must work while wearing protective
gloves, goggles, and/or steel toed footwear; subject to equipment and chemical hazards, heat,
fumes and loud noise from equipment and vehicle operation; frequent to constant exposure to dust,
gasoline, grease, solvents, and extreme temperatures; must work with and around dangerous
equipment and machinery with moving parts; may be required to work during day and/or
evening hours on an as-needed basis at any College location.
