Morrell Library Induction for HYMS Year I Students September 2013 Finding your way around the Morrell Library This brief exercise should be completed prior to the Information Skills 1 workshop. You may be examined on your knowledge of the material covered during the course. The following document has been designed to give you a feel for the layout of the Morrell Library and where to find the materials most relevant to your course. For this exercise you will need to use the catalogue to find the exact shelf location of items and then find them on the shelf to answer the questions. It is advisable to look up all the titles online first before physically finding the items. The Library’s medical books and journals are shelved in the Y sections. However, there will be other books that will be useful for your course that may be shelved in other sections so bear this in mind when searching for books and journals. Many of our academic journals are provided online in addition to being shelved in the Library. You can access these in the Library and from the PC classrooms situated around the University campus. Most electronic resources can also be accessed from home. You can find the University of York Library catalogue at http://yorsearch.york.ac.uk/ or on the Find Books tab on the HYMS Library webpages: http://libguides.hull.ac.uk/medicine Model answers and help are given at the end of this exercise. Should you have any questions please contact the HYMS Library Team (email: library@hyms.ac.uk). Before starting You’ll find lots of useful information about the library on the induction guide: http://www.york.ac.uk/library/informationfor/newusers/ Before starting this exercise please watch the YorSearch guide (available on the Library’s YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/YorkInformation) or read the guide at http://www.york.ac.uk/library/search/yorsearch-help/. Books You could find this item on the YorSearch catalogue by typing Armstrong outline into the Library Catalogue search box then clicking on Search. To view the shelf location click on the retrieved book title. The shelfmark of this item is DA 2.1 ARM. To view current availability of this title select the Get It tab. Note that if you return to the original list of titles on from your retrieved search you will find that the library also has copies of the 1983 ( 2nd) edition in stock. It is often usual for libraries to keep copies of older editions of textbooks next to later editions for the purposes of comparison – so be aware of this when checking the shelves and make sure you consult the edition that has been specified in your course reading list. The second chapter of the book is “Going to the doctor”. 2. Books (Quarto Collection) This book is shelved at Y 1.8 CRO in the QUARTO COLLECTION of the medical section of the library. It is important when checking the catalogue to note if a book is in the quarto section as the shelf location does not indicate that this book is in a different collection. The title of chapter 5 is “Coverings of the central nervous system”. Note that, although not listed on YorSearch, this book is also available as an eBook via Hull. We will show you how to access Hull eBooks in Information Skills 1. 3. eBooks The 5th (2009) edition is available as an eBook and you should be able to access it by clicking on the external link in the View it tab3 – you will need your York e-account details. The title of Volume 1 Part 1 is Basic mechanisms of normal and abnormal gastrointestinal function. Sep 13 (library@hyms.ac.uk) You may find it easier to access ebooks on a normal PC rather than a catalogue PC due to restrictions on the catalogue PCs. 3 3
