WHAT AN INCREDIBLE QUALITY OF LOVE! (1 John 3:1) 1. Why would the Perfect One die for “the ungodly” and “sinners” before there was anything good in us, while we were still in rebellion against Him? 2. KJV: “Behold, what manner of love…” NASB: “See how great a love…” NJB: “You must see what great love…” Moff: “Think what a love…” Wuest: “Behold what exotic [foreign to the human heart] love…” Amp: “See what an incredible quality of love…” His Love is Unconditional: But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil (Lu. 6:35). His Love is Self-sacrificing: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling fragrance (Eph. 5:2). Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it (Eph. 5:25). His Love Does No Evil to Us: Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law (Rom. 13:10). His Love Compels Us to See Others through the Cross: For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if One died for all, then were all dead. And that he died for all, that they who live should no longer live unto themselves, but unto him who died for them, and rose again. Therefore from now on know we no man after the flesh [human viewpoint] (2 Cor. 5:14-16a). His Love is Compassionate, Tender-hearted & Courteous: Finally, be all of one mind, having compassion one with another, love as brethren, be tender hearted, be courteous (1 Pet. 3:8). His Love Grows in Us through the Word & Gives Confidence: But whoever keeps His Word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: by this we know that we are in him (1 John 2:5).
