Departmental Notification to Student about Reinstatement in Course
In accordance with Section C.I.(a) 12 of the University’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters,
students are not permitted to withdraw from a course while an allegation of academic
misconduct is under investigation. This rule is intended to prevent students from avoiding the
consequences of their actions by dropping the course.
If you realize that a student has withdrawn from the course at any point after the alleged
offence has occurred, your department administrator should contact ruth.foulds@utoronto.ca
at the Office of the Faculty Registrar with a request for reinstatement.
You should also notify the student that this has been done by using one of the following
templates.
Prior to Instructor Meeting: Email from Instructor
Dear [STUDENT] ,
As you know, there are some concerns with [BRIEF_DESCRIPTION] and I have written to you
previously to provide you with an opportunity to discuss these concerns.
I notice that you have now withdrawn from the course. Please note that in accordance with
Section C.I.(a) 12 of the University’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters, students are not
permitted to withdraw from a course while an allegation of academic misconduct is under
investigation.
I am thus writing to notify you that you have been reinstated in [COURSE] . You are responsible
for completing any work that you may have missed, so please contact me to discuss possible
arrangements for doing so. If the allegation is dismissed at any point, you will be allowed to
withdraw from the course without penalty if you still wish to do so.
I would like to offer you another opportunity to discuss these concerns.
"[OFFER A FEW MEETING TIMES]" . Please let me know by "[DEADLINE (ABOUT A WEEK)]" when
you would like to meet. If you do not wish to meet, please let me know and your case will be
forwarded to the Dean’s Office for resolution..
If I do not hear from you by [DEADLINE] , I will assume that you do not wish to meet with me
and will forward your case to the Dean’s Office.

Administrator
Dear [STUDENT] ,
As you know from your meeting with Professor [NAME] on [DATE] , there are some concerns
with [BRIEF_DESCRIPTION] . [IF_STUDENT_WAS_TOLD:] You were told at this meeting that you
were not permitted to withdraw from the course.
I understand that you have now withdrawn from the course. Please note that in accordance
with Section C.I.(a) 12 of the University’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters, students are
not permitted to withdraw from a course while an allegation of academic misconduct is under
investigation.
I am thus writing to notify you that you have been reinstated in [COURSE] . You are responsible

After Departmental Sanction has been Imposed (from instructor or departmental
administrator

As you know, at our meeting on [DATE] you admitted to [OFFENCE] in [COURSE] and the
sanction of [SANCTION] was imposed by the Associate Chair of the Department, Professor
[NAME] . [IF_STUDENT_WAS_TOLD:] You were told at this meeting that you were not permitted
to withdraw from the course.
It has come to the department’s attention that you have withdrawn from the course. Please
note that in accordance with Section C.I.(a) 12 of the University’s Code of Behaviour on
Academic Matters, students are not permitted to withdraw from a course after a sanction has
been imposed for academic misconduct.
I am thus writing to notify you that you have been reinstated in [COURSE] and are responsible
for making up any work which you may have missed since you dropped the course. Please
contact your instructor to discuss possible arrangements for making up that work.
