The Indiana State University Community School of the Arts (CSA) provides the communities of the Wabash Valley and surrounding areas the opportunity to participate in non-credit classes in music, theater and visual art and private music lessons. This fee allows you to sign up for as many lessons and classes as you wish, during the fall, spring and summer semesters. This covers the period of August 19, 2014 to August 18, 2015. Members receive a 10% discount on classes. ISU employees, ISU students and OLLI members receive CSA members’ prices without paying the membership fee. There are no discounts on fees for private music lessons, Sycamore Drum Major Clinic, Rock Camp or Drum Line. Due to shorter summer sessions, music lesson fees are pro-rated. MUSIC FOR CHILDREN THE TERRE HAUTE GUITAR CLUB The Community School of the Arts’ Terre Haute Guitar Club offers unique learning experiences for children ages 5 and up, teens and adults. Our teachers - extraordinary guitarists and players 7 themselves - lead this program using a fun, multi-layered and accessible approach to learning guitar through guitar classes and lessons. Guitar Club students are placed in age-appropriate labs that meet throughout the week. As students progress through the program, they learn to develop their technical skills on the guitar while learning to understand and properly apply musical concepts. Students are given the opportunity to learn songs, all while building a connection with rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas. As students gain more confidence in and dedication to their practice, they are able to take one-on-one lessons with one of our trained instructors. All Guitar Club students are given opportunities to perform with their peers during various recitals and community public performances. Students use Sumi-e brushstrokes to create a small book of animals and characters. Traveling through a virtual tour, students see the great Stonehenge and create their own post and lintel structures using assorted materials. Natural elements such as rocks and leaves will become painting surfaces when students create Aboriginal Australian dot paintings. The tour will end with a French Impressionist painting lesson inspired by Claude Monet. A mural will be created and displayed during the final art exhibition in the Turman Art Gallery. RESIDENT MUSIC CAMPS SYCAMORE DRUM MAJOR AND LEADERSHIP CLINIC The regular weeklong Drum Major and Leadership Clinic will take place July 12-17 with check-in beginning on the morning of July 12. We will also be hosting two mini-clinics on the weekends of June 27-28 and July 25-26. These weekend sessions will be basic presentations of conducting technique, 15 leadership, and salutes, but will not include most of the many other distinctive features of the weeklong clinic. The cost for the full week session is $525 for resident students and $300 for commuters. Included in the cost are a camp t-shirt and camp picture, a personalized certificate of achievement, and all instructional materials. In the tradition of T.C. Steele, Indiana’s most notable plein air painter, students will paint out-of-doors, receiving instruction in various acrylic painting techniques related to rendering the landscape on-site. Class meets in different locations in the Terre Haute area including Dobbs Park, Fowler Park, Downtown Terre Haute and the St. Mary of-the-Woods campus. Each class begins with a 1-hour demonstration on how to stain canvas, draw directly with paint, mix color, paint texture, and deal with constantly changing light. Instructional handouts will be provided. After the demonstration, participants will paint until 1:30 p.m. during which time the instructor will consult with painters to assist with questions. The last half hour will be spent in critique. Class will 17 be rescheduled in the event of rain. Some walking is required. Since this is an out-of-doors class, we advise that each student bring a folding chair, sunscreen, hat, and water or other beverage. Participants will be working in shelters on picnic tables. However, students are welcome to bring portable easels and small working tables. The second workshop will allow students to make “final touches” on their projects, followed by a final critique, using a round table workshop approach.
