Introduction
This guide provides an overview of the rich and fascinating archive collections held at the Barking
and Dagenham Archive and Local Studies Centre. It has been organised according to the type of
record, e.g. parish records, local authority records, school records, church records, hospital records,
business records, the records of charities, societies and clubs, family and personal papers,
photographs, films and oral histories, and then within these sections collections have been listed
alphabetically.
For further information about the contents of any of the collections listed below or to enquire
about viewing archive material in the reading room, please do not hesitate to contact a member of

Parish records
Records of the Parish of Barking, 1558-1926
This collection comprises vestry minute books (1694-1926), baptism registers (1558-1812), burial
registers (1652-1812), overseer’s accounts (1752-1927), churchwarden’s accounts (1777-1823),
rate books (1723-1926), valuation lists (1842-1929), rental books (1763-1778), notice books (17691839) and apprenticeship books (1818-1844) of the Parish of Barking. Also includes the records of
the Directors’ of the Poor (1855-1893), relating to the management of the Town Quay, as well as
and the minute books and depositor’s books of the Barking District Savings Bank (1818-1852).

minute book of the choir (1929-1955), the church roll (1852-1919), the cradle roll (1952-1991),
communion registers (1928-1980), a dismission book (1922-1950), letter book (1886-1891),
correspondence and papers (1871-1990), printed leaflets, such as visitor guides and anniversary

members present at meetings, the admission of new members and correspondence received, as

the church building, visiting preachers and the activities of the congregation.

Vestry minute book of St. Mary’s Church, Ilford, 1831-1873
Manuscript vestry minute book of St. Mary’s Church, Illford (15 September 1831-9 January 1873),
recording resolutions passed on the day to day management of the church and grounds, repairs
and maintenance to the church building, the appointment of churchwardens, the churchwardens
accounts and the collection of church rates. Also includes particularly interesting references to a
dispute between the new vicar and parishioners, who called for a return to ‘the customary simple
mode of performing divine worship’ (18 January 1844), providing an insight into popular
perceptions of religious dissent among the clergy during the middle of the nineteenth century.

This collection comprises a staff register (1985-1934) and three patient registers (1898-1938) of
Upney Isolation Hospital. Also includes a register of cases admitted to Barking Emergency Hospital
during the Second World War (1940-1949), as well as a further register of admissions (1946-1948)
and booking register (1946-1948) of Upney Maternity Hospital, together with five maternity
admissions registers (1949-1957) and maternity ward report books (1948-1949) of Barking

This collection comprises correspondence, leaflets and photograph albums, relating to Andrews
Stores, situated at 445 and 450-452 Becontree Avenue, Dagenham (1925-1984), as well as the
personal papers and family photographs of Norman W. Andrews, manager of the furniture
department of Andrews Stores and the Joint Managing Director of N. W. Andrews & Co Ltd (19362000). Also together with a biography on the life and work of Norman W. Andrews, written as a
research project by Elaine Noakes (2000).

This collection comprises two photograph albums of Sherwood Paints Ltd (formally known as
Gross, Sherwood and Heald Ltd) (circa. 1900-1920), showing an aerial and exterior view of the
factory building in Barking, which was built in 1910, as well as men and women workers at the mill,
grinding and mixing paint colours, vanish making, oil boiling and refining, making tin cans and
finally labelling and packaging goods.

history of the company and statistics on the production of munitions and field telephones, the

during the First World War. Also contains photographs, with annotations, showing male and female
munitions workers on the factory floor and in the canteen at the works in Dagenham, as well as at
the new Recretational Hall and a nurse at the onsite First Aid Hospital.

1929-1951
This collection comprises five manuscript minute books of the Dagenham Branch of the
Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (23 April 1929 to 30 November 1951), recording the
officers present, correspondence and circulars received, as well as the subsequent proceedings of
meetings, with particular references to the rules of trade unions, working conditions and the
political situation in Dagenham. Also includes resolutions on appeals from members for assistance
during strikes and times of hardship.

including the secretary and the treasurer, as well as the subsequent discussions that took place on
the promotion of trading and the interests of those doing business in Dagenham, with particular
references to membership rules, membership numbers, fund raising, social events, arrangements
for the industries section of the Dagenham Town Show, the development of shops at Dagenham
Heathway and finally the amalgamation with the Barking Chamber of Trade to become the Barking
and Dagenham Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Records of Dagenham Cricket Club, 1951-1959
This collection comprises correspondence of the Dagenham Cricket Club (1953-1959), relating to
the proceedings of the annual general meeting, the role of the secretary, the maintenance of local
cricket pitches, events, fixtures and results. Accompanied by five scoring books (1951-1955),
detailing the teams and date of matches and then the score of each batsman, how the batsman
was called out, the bowler, the progress of the score and bowler analysis. Also including a summary
of bowling for the season at the back of each volume.

Minute book of Dagenham Employment Committee (7 October 1937-17 October 1944), recording
the members present, correspondence received and the subsequent discussions that took place on
rates of unemployment and welfare claims immediately before and then during the Second World
War, with particular references to the employment of disabled war veterans. Also interspersed
with related minutes of the Minister of Labour Employment and Insurance Department, as well as
reports, compiled by Dagenham Employment Exchange, including statistics on rates of
unemployment and job vacancies in Dagenham.

material, newspaper cuttings, balance sheets and reports by the Treasurer. Also accompanied by
printed ephemera, including newsletters, leaflets, flyers and catalogues, collected and presumably
used for reference purposes by the Secretary of the Society (1970-1982).

Memoir of Walter Perren, 1914-1917
Manuscript memoir, written by Walter Perren (1914-1917), recounting his experiences serving with
the Middlesex Regiment 17th Battalion during the First World War. Includes descriptions of his
enlistment in August 1914 and his training in Colchester, Essex, before embarking to Boulogne at
the beginning of 1915. Also detailing his impressions of the battlefield, with particular references to
being transported to the front in a cattle truck, the sound of exploding shells and the destruction of
the surrounding towns and villages, as well as the action that he saw during the Battle of Loos (25
September - 14 October 1915), the Third Battle of Ypres, often referred to as the Battle of
Passchendaele (June - November 1917) and then the Battle of Caporetto in Italy (NovemberDecember 1917). The memoir ends abruptly in December 1917. Also with a scanned print of a
