STEM Summer School Science Technology Engineering Math At Reek Elementary School W4094 South Lakeshore Drive Lake Geneva, WI 53147 262-248-4120 1 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS K-2 CLASSES Fancy Nancy: Explorer Extraordinaire! Grade Level: K-2 Instructor – Kyle Heiselmann Children will become members of Fancy Nancy’s club, “Explorers Extraordinaire,” by exploring the great outdoors. They will explore the fascinating world of wildflowers, trees, leaves, birds, and insects. We will read Fancy Nancy books, learn new vocabulary words, and keep an exploration journal. Using iPads, we will take pictures of our outdoor explorations and research our findings. Explorers will paint bird houses with pine cone bird feeders so they can continue bird watching at home. Presentation Power Grade Level: K-2 Instructor – Katie Steadman Students will be given opportunities to do research and create presentations using the iPad. One presentation will be a story recording with students’ own voices. Students will create a presentation about themselves and their family. We will also spend time outside using the natural elements in the presentations. Building a House out of Nature's Gifts Grade Level: K-2 Instructor – Lynn Miller In this class students will gain an awareness and appreciation for natural things. Mother Nature provides an endless supply of materials that can be recycled into something beautiful. Students will design their homes and then decorate them from found objects that we will gather on nature walks. Each student will be encouraged to be creative and will have a feeling of accomplishment when they see what they have built. They will be encouraged to always see the beauty and potential of the natural wonders of the world. Incredible Insects Grade Level: K-2 Instructor – Jennifer Pearce Examine shining dragon fly wings. Learn why bees hum. Research what makes insects similar to one another. Locate and observes insects in their native habitat. Create an insect habitat from recycled objects. Insects really are incredible! 2 3-5 CLASSES Book and Cook Grade Level: 3-5 Instructor – Nancy Castelein Have fun reading chapters from different classics such as Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Little House in the Big Woods, and The Wind in the Willows. Then, cook up a storm from these fun and exciting stories. Be prepared to try your hand at Toad in the Hole and fruit fizzes! Science All Around Us Grade Level: 3-5 Instructor – Nancy Castelein Investigate the properties of everyday things such as ketchup packets, pennies, and glue. Using the scientific method to question and experiment, explore and discover many secrets of the scientific world. LEGOS Can Do Work Grade Level 3-5 Instructor – Hank Peters Learn how LEGOS can be assembled into simple machines. Yes, they can actually do work and be useful! This course will challenge students to use their creativity to design simple machines out of LEGOS. We will also do research about machines and find them in work environments. Build a Rube Goldberg LikeDevice Grade Level: 3-5 Instructor – Carie Ruhl Rube Goldberg was an engineer, artist, sculptor, author and inventor. He is best known for his drawings of wacky contraptions. In this class we will learn about simple machines and the transfer of energy. Students will use their imagination and creativity to design, build, and test a “Rube Goldberg-Like Device.” 3 Yoga, Dance and the Human Body Grade Level: 3-5 Instructor – Samantha Polek Students will learn basic anatomy through yoga practice and jazz dance. The class includes instruction covering the skeletal and muscular system as well as yoga and jazz workouts combining stretching, balancing, and mental relaxation. Insects really are incredible! 6-8 CLASSES The Hour of Code Grade Level – 6-8 Instructor – Kyle Getz Students will work with a program called 'Hour of Code' which is designed to teach students how to write/create computer programs, learn internet and computer coding, and even build/create their own games. It's an opportunity to really have students look at technology in a new way. Create Your Own Web Site Grade Level 6-8 Instructor – Kyle Getz Students will create their own web sites. This is excellent preparation for the future as well as a way to highlight the special events in their lives. 4 Logic Puzzles and Games Grade Level 6-8 Instructor – Mike Palmer Students will work with logic puzzles and games, teaching critical thinking skills and strategies. We will work on ways to develop and effectively apply critical thinking skills not only in academics, but in the situations we face each day as well as decisions we will make in the future. In this class, critical thinking and problem solving will become alive through the use of interactive games, puzzles, and activities. Students will also be taught how to solve the Rubik's Cube, and each student will go home with one at the end of the class. Mission to the Moon Grade Level 6-8 Instructor – Hank Peters Students will design a paper/pencil Lunar Lander or a Lunar Miner/Rover. We will discuss elements of design and space exploration. The group will work together to create a robot - a programmable and controlled machine capable of performing tasks generally done by humans. Mythbusters Science Grade Level 6-8 Instructor – Ashley Miu This is not your average science class. Come join us as we test out some experiments, similar to the popular television show, and work to prove or disprove the myth behind the science. Students will be engaged in hands-on science activities and even have a chance to create their own “Mythbusters” show on the last day. 5 Schedule Use the grade level students will be in fall.
