Home Care Aide Lesson Plan Summary – Day 1 Total Time: 6 hours. Note that breaks are not included in the sequence of instruction and should be given based approximately every 1 to 1.5 hours and as time allows. 30 minutes should be allowed for lunch, or as time allows. Objectives: 1. Describe the structure of the healthcare system, including Medicare and Medicaid 2. Explain the purpose of and need for home health care 3. Describe the differences between a medical and non-medical home care agency and the roles a home care aide provides in both settings 4. Identify the roles of the healthcare team members 5. Activities: Name Activity #1: Ice breaker Activity #2: Ground Rules Description Instructor can make up their own ice breaker, however some examples are given below: Have students write the word TRUE on each side of a piece of paper and FALSE on the other side (in large print). The students will then take turns saying true and false statements about themselves. The other students will hold up the true or false, depending on whether they believe it or not. Encourage them to be creative and funny. On the student’s name card, have them draw pictures that represent where they are originally from, their favorite thing to eat or drink, one thing that is important to them, one thing that makes them happy. Have students pull out a coin and recall a story that happened in the year on the coin. Have students come up with ground rules for learning. Write rules on large self-sticking paper. Some rules may include: Respect other people’s opinions and experiences, don’t interrupt others, show up to class on time, come back from break on time, instructor will start and stop on time, no phone calls or texting during class, complete all assignments, and participate fully in a group activities. Goals/Outcomes For the class participants to become familiar with each other and bond for a more productive learning environment. Students will create and agree to ground rules established by the class and instructor. Instructor should post the rules in a conspicuous place, every class. Instructor should refer back to rules at the beginning of every class and if a rule is violated. Students will learn about: The role of the companion homemaker Importance of people skills Positive communication techniques Ageism Ethics, integrity, and professional behavior Cultural sensitivities Appearance and hygiene Phone etiquette Escorting and transporting your client Observation skills Handling medical emergencies Fire safety and disaster preparedness Distribute accompanying quiz after each video to demonstrate knowledge. Students will demonstrate how to organize care assignments Ask students to brainstorm a list of tasks they may be required to perform for a client during a typical visit. Write the tasks on the whiteboard or on a large self-sticking paper. Then have the students prioritize the tasks in their notebooks. After a few minutes, ask for suggestions about how to prioritize the list. Make a final prioritized list on the whiteboard or paper using the students’ suggestions. Next, ask the students if they only had 2 hours to complete their tasks, how would this change the list. Discuss the impact of time management and what they need to do if they run out of time. Materials needed/Instructor Notes Note to Instructor: Distribute student syllabus and review classroom expectations, homework, test dates, and other information. Distribute textbook and workbook. Note to Instructor: Make sure that students will write their names on the name cards and one by one introduce themselves. Students should also state where they currently work or what they do for a living, what they hope to get out of the class and one unique thing about themselves that other people don’t know.
