RECYCLING AT GROVE ISLE
RECYCLING IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
The State of Florida has a goal of achieving a 75% recycling rate by the year 2020. This basically
means that 75% of the material that we throw out in our trash should be recycled. Indian River
County (IRC) is at a 33% recycling rate now so the transition to single stream recycling is just
one of the many ways they are trying work with its residents and local businesses to reach 75%
by 2020! While Grove Isle residents have been doing a great job in helping Indian River
County’s recycling effort, we need to continue our efforts. Below is a list of guidelines each
resident should follow.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
IRC has now changed to a Single Stream Recycling program where all recyclables can be
mixed in one container. That means no more sorting! Below is a description of what can and
cannot be recycled. This decal is also posted on each blue bin.
Do not put plastic bags or plastic film in the recycling bins. If you transport your recycled
articles to the blue bins in plastic bags, empty the bags of recycled articles and discard them in
the trash dumpster.
Plastic grocery bags only can be recycled at all Publix stores.
Do not place shredded paper in the recycling bins.
Do not put tires or furniture in the garbage/recycling area.
Styrofoam of any kind should not be placed in the blue bins (see the section on Styrofoam
recycling).
RECYCLING AT GROVE ISLE
Remove all plastic caps on plastic, metal and glass containers. Metal caps should be removed
from the containers and recycled loose in the bin.
All recycled material should be rinsed clean and free of any residue contamination (e.g., food,
cosmetics, detergents, etc.).
Cardboard boxes must be broken down (laid flat) and no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet in size. If
you are unable to do this, see if you can get the help of a neighbor to assist you.
Do not place hazardous waste in garbage or recycling bins. Items such as oil-based paint cans,
fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides, automotive or boat batteries can be taken any of the five
convenience centers or the main landfill for proper disposal.
Partygoers and volunteers – Do not recycle foam plates or cups, used napkins, plastic
bags/wrappings, or any other paper or plastic articles that have food residue on them.
If you have an article that you think is still useable, please do not leave it in garbage/recycling
areas. Take it to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or one of the many thrift stores in the area.
Construction debris should not be discarded in any garbage dumpster. If you have a contractor
working for you, they must remove any debris from the Grove Isle site. For do-it-yourselfers,
you must take it directly to the main landfill on Oslo Road.
Located on the last page of this article are the addresses and directions to the main landfill and
convenience centers for your reference.
