Workbook 2: Katakana

名前: _____________________

Introduction to Katakana:

Katakana is the second of the Japanese writing systems. It is still a syllabary, meaning every character makes a sound. Katakana is often the middle ground between hiragana and kanji, focusing on words that do not fit well into the other two writing systems. Therefore, katakana is often seen in translations or transcripts of foreign words (primarily English, but not all loan words will be of English origin), to represent onomatopoeia, etc.

Because katakana follows the same sounds as hiragana, the charts for each will look similar.

Katakana has the ability to create more sounds than hiragana by using a mixture of letters together.

Despite sounding similar, katakana characters are much harsher looking with sharper strokes and corners.

Sounds:

Every katakana character can be represented by a Romanized character. In most translations, these romaji are more likely to represent the sound made rather than the consonant-vowel pairing suggested by the chart. The Romanized letters that appear in romaji do not always make the sounds we think they will as first-language English speakers. The changes mainly take places with the vowels, and consonants will sound the same or relatively similar.

The chouonpu is represented by an extended dash (—), and is said as an extended vowel. The sokuon is the same in hiragana: a small tsu that creates a short pause to emphasize the next consonant.

Creating Additional Sounds

Katakana can be used to create additional sounds not in the syllabary. This is usually done by changing the vowel sound, and works similarly to adding a y sound. While adding a y sound can only be done to the い -column, changing vowels in katakana can be done with the え -column, お -column, and with フ and ワ . To change the vowel, add a small version of the vowel you want to be said next to the closest consonant/vowel combination.

Here are the most common combinations: ti di tu fi we fe fa fo je
