SOUTH AUSTRALIAN BUILT HERITAGE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP 2013/2014
AT THE ARCHITECTURE MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
GUIDELINES
Fellowship Purpose
The Fellowship is funded by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources
(DEWNR) and managed by the Architecture Museum at the University of South Australia. It
aims to support:

research into, and associated publications about, South Australia’s built heritage

provision of potential resources which may assist in an understanding of the relative
significance of surviving heritage places, and in particular their historical and/or
architectural context

scholarly use of the architectural archives and library of the Architecture Museum at
the University of South Australia.
The Fellowship
In 2013/14 the DEWNR SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship is valued at $6000.
Applicants are required to develop a research proposal based on a list of topics made available
by DEWNR. In their research applicants should aim to utilise, wherever possible, the
collections and library of the Architecture Museum.
Who can apply?
Postgraduate students or established freelance researchers.
What projects can be undertaken?

The applicant is to design a project based on a topic from this list and utilising the collections
and library of the Architecture Museum. The Museum’s Finding Aids are available online at:

DEWNR SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship 2013/2014
The judging panel is especially keen to receive applications that focus on surviving structures
and their context, especially thematic groupings such as those by a particular architect, those
using a particular material or building technique, or those of a particular type.
How are applications judged?
The judging panel will assess applications according to the following criteria:

appropriate project selection

sound project plan

achievable timeline

appropriate proposed outcomes

demonstrated research ability of the applicant.
What are the benefits?
Awardees will be provided with:

funds to be acquitted as salary. Other costs, including travel, are to be covered by the
awardee.

access to the archives and library of the Architecture Museum, University of South
Australia and DEWNR’s Heritage and Landscape Conservation Unit libraries

free photocopying of project-related material held by the Architecture Museum,
DEWNR’s Heritage and Landscape Conservation Unit

access to a PC with internet connection.
What are the obligations of awardees?
Awardees will be required to:

expend the fellowship monies in the 12 months for which they are awarded

prepare a working paper (A4 format, 8000-10,000 words, illustrated as appropriate)
detailing the research and its outcomes within 6 months of completion of the Fellowship
period. Copyright remains with the author but the Museum retains the right to publish the
working paper within 18 months of its completion

work with the Architecture Museum Director to prepare a shortened version
(approximately 6000 words) of the report for publication in the Architecture Museum
Monograph Series

give a public presentation on the results of their work within 6 months of completion of
the working paper. The venue for the presentation will be negotiated with the awardee by
the Architecture Museum Director and a representative of DEWNR.
DEWNR SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship 2013/2014

lodge copies of the working paper and the associated research material with the
Architecture Museum and the Heritage Branch of DEWNR or their successors

acknowledge the support of DEWNR in the report and in any publication drawing on the
research undertaken

[optional] provide a list summarising any notable or outstanding surviving places
discovered during research (places of potential significance in the context of the
development of South Australia or Australia). (This will be particularly valuable in cases
where places are not currently included in the South Australian Heritage Register).
Past Fellowship projects
Previous DEWNR Fellows have undertaken studies on Russell Ellis, Brian Claridge, Art
Deco in South Australian Architecture, Harold T. Griggs, architect-designed houses in Unley
Park and the Government Buildings Precinct, Adelaide.

Fellowship announcement and commencement date
The successful Fellowship applicant is expected to be announced by 23 August 2013.
Awardees will be expected to take up the Fellowship by mid-September 2013.
