A Danish language and culture course designed for Danes
Worldwide

Instructor: Jan Aage Rasmussen, associate professor, University of Copenhagen.
The Danish Cultural Institute in cooperation with Danes Worldwide is organizing a Danish
language and culture course for adult relatives to Danes living and working abroad. The course
participants are either non-Danish or Danes that do not have Danish as their mother tongue.
Learning objective
o To enable the participants to communicate in Danish
o To make the participants familiar with Danish grammar and pronunciation
o To give the participants and overall understanding of Danish culture in a contemporary and
historical perspective
o To make the participants comfortable with being on their own in Denmark
o To give the participants interesting cultural experiences in Denmark
Preparation
The participants will send information about themselves to the instructor, Jan Aage Rasmussen,
by email to Jan Aage Rasmussen, jaar@hum.ku.dk. In the following email-correspondence the
instructor will test their level of knowledge of the Danish language, and be informed about their
special interests in Denmark. He will want to know, whether they all understand English and
which other languages they use. Based on this information the course will be tailored to the
enrolled participants’ needs.

Working languages: Danish and English.
First week: Monday 13 July – Friday 17 July
09:00-12:00
Danish class: Communication exercises, grammar and grammatical exercises, training
pronunciation (Danish songs and rhymes), reading texts. Comparing Danish culture with the
participants’ backgrounds.
12:00-13:30
Lunch break
13:30-16:00
or evening Cultural event: 14th A Danish Film, 15th The Danish Parliament, Folketinget, 17th Art
Museum Louisiana, 18th Christiania or historical walking tour.
Second week: Monday 20 July – Friday 24 July
09:00-12:00
Danish class: Communication exercises, grammar and grammatical exercises, training
pronunciation (Danish songs and rhymes), reading texts, role-plays covering everyday
situations, etiquette. Comparing Danish culture with the participants’ backgrounds.
12:00-13:30
Lunch break
13:30-16:00
or evening Cultural event: Cultural event: 21st Assistens Churchyard, 22nd Walking in historical
Copenhagen, 23rd The Viking Museum and Cathedral in Roskilde, 24th Concert House or the
Opera, 25th Interview with real Danes
Third week: Monday 27 July – Friday 31 July
09:00-12:00
Cultural events: 28th A Danish Film, 29th Visit to the Danish National Gallery, 30th the National
Museum, 31st -1st August visits to other Danish institutions or other cultural events.
13:00-16:00
Danish class: Communication exercises, grammar and grammatical exercises, training
pronunciation (Danish songs and rhymes), reading professional texts, role-plays covering
various informal and formal situations, etiquette. Comparing Danish culture with the participants’
backgrounds.
Diploma
The Danish Cultural Institute will issue a diploma with a description of the course content

Price
Members of Danes Worldwide: DKK 6000
Non-members: DKK 7000
Transport for cultural visits is not included.

Please note: A minimum of 11 prepaid entries are required to run the course. The
Danish Cultural Institute reserves the right to cancel the course if the minimum of
