24th Annual Moose Festival Winners
The 24th Annual North Country Moose Festival, which took place last weekend, drew over 2600
attendees, between both days of festivities in Colebrook and Canaan, VT. An impressive 130 vendors
participated, as well as many exhibitors and entertainers. The new location in Colebrook filled the
southern end of Main Street with lively activity, a new layout in Canaan was well received and Pittsburg
events also went over well.
Below is a listing of all the winners of North Country Chamber of Commerce hosted contests and raffles
held at the Moose Festival. A feedback survey will be available on the Chamber's website:
www.chamberofthenorthcountry.com, and all are encouraged to share their input about the event to
help it improve.
There were eight entries from local sugarhouses in the annual Maple Syrup Tasting Contest held on
August 29th in Canaan at the Moose Festival. 87 taste testers voted for their favorites, resulting in the
following winners:
Best in Show- April’s Maple (April Lemay)
People’s Choice- Buckwheat Hill Farm (Dan & Morgan Wade)
Golden Color- First Place: April’s Maple; Second Place: Buckwheat Hill Farm
Amber Color- First Place: April’s Maple; Second Place: Mt. Monadnock Vermont Maple Syrup (Yvan
Doyon)
Dark Color- First Place: Mt. Monadnock Vermont Maple Syrup; Second Place: April’s Maple
Very Dark Color- First Place: Mt. Monadnock Vermont Maple Syrup; Second Place: Buckwheat Hill Farm
Future participants please note, only a quart is needed for people’s choice and a sample jug for the state
judge.
The famous Moose Calling Contest drew sixteen participants of varying ages. They came from New
Hampshire, Vermont, Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut and as far away as South Carolina! Roger
Irwin led the sample call and judges were Jonathan Brown, Abigail Brown and Butch Ladd. Winners in
the youth category were Kayden*, Eric Young and Carter Wheeler. Winners in the adult category were
David*, Charlie*, and Nick Lang. Buck White received an honorable mention, and all were given
certificates for daring to do a moose call in front of a crowd. (*Last names unavailable.)
The Moose Festival raffle, conducted at the Chamber booth, was quite popular. Winners have all been
notified and were as follows, showing the wide range of places folks come from to enjoy the festival:
1) The gift certificate for a 12” limited edition fine art print by Sea Glass Fine Art Photography went to
Pat Beauregard of Canaan, VT.
2) The gift certificate for a one night stay in a lakeside cabin at Jackson’s Lodge in Canaan, VT went to
Celina Ayers of West Townsend, VT.
3) The gift certificate for a half day ATV rental at Bear Rock Adventures went to Richard Fiore of Alton,
NH.
4) The gift certificate for a one night stay at A Peace of Heaven B&B in Millsfield went to Tom Brankner
of Glen Gardner, NJ.
5) The gift certificate for Mohawk Valley Camping Area of Colebrook went to Pam Chute of Sunapee,
NH.
6) The gift certificate for New Earth Organic Farm products went to Leslie Jackson of Alton, NH.

7) The gift certificate to April’s Maple went to Deb Brooks of Colebrook, NH.
8) The Ruth’s Mustard gift crate went to Miriam Radkovich of Stanhope, NJ.
9) The book by Charles Jordan entitled “Tales Told in the Shadows of the White Mountains” went to
George Parker of N. Easton, MA.
The Classic Auto Show in Canaan, VT drew 72 participants. Best of Show went to Jackie Roese of Island
Pond, VT with a red 1957 Chevy Nomad. The Longest Distance award, for the vehicle that came from
farthest away, went to Jeff Martin of Cranston, RI who brought a blue 1974 Chevy Corvette. The oldest
car award went to John E. Brooks who had a black 1930 Model A Ford 170 Bdyl. Seventeen other classes
were judged and awards were presented for each. Nine participated in the Muffler Rap contest and the
winner was William Brown of Raymond, NH. Second place went to Ron Martin of Swansea, MA and
third was awarded to Bruce Jaycox of Clarksville, NH. The Piston Toss winners were as follows:
Kids category:

3rd- Owen Parker of White River Junction, VT
Women’s category:
1st- Corrine Brown of Raymond, NH
2nd- Amber McShane of Anderson, SC
