Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools

The Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research, a Nagoya

University Program for Leading Graduate Schools, intends to nurture international leaders with the ability to drive the space industry and to support forefront industries through the development of space technology and expansion of space utilization.

In order to achieve this goal, we will provide various courses to cultivate planning ability, practical skills, broad knowledge and perspective, problem-solving ability, organization and management ability, and global communication skills through the five-year program.

We are accepting additional Nagoya University students who become M2 student of

Master course in April 2015. Details are given in the website as indicated below. http://www.frontier.phys.nagoya-u.ac.jp/index-e.html

[Eligibility]

1. Current M1 Graduate student (including international students) in Nagoya

University who are able to commit to complete a doctoral course and this program. Please note that you will not be able to leave this program, even if selected for DC1 or DC2 Research Fellowship by Japanese Society for the

Promotion of Science (JSPS) while you are in the program.

2. Applicants must complete the following coursework in this program by the end of March, 2015. Please contact the Admissions Office for more details.

- Basics for space science and engineering

- Video Lectures for space science and engineering :

6 video lectures have to be completed.

(Choose 4 video lectures from the course you prefer, and 2 (or more) video

lectures from other courses out of 16 video lectures.)

- Lectures and short courses on space science and engineering:

Most recent lectures and courses are scheduled as follows.

・ February 23 rd to 25 th , 2015 for satellite system lectures

・ February 26 th and 27 th , 2015 for short courses on micro-satellite application and development

・ March 3 rd and 4 th for short courses on thermal design and analysis

A total of 2 or more credits

If you want to take satellite-related lectures and courses, please contact the

Admissions Office as soon as possible.

Applicants who have completed coursework above and some additional courses will be given priority. There are other courses such as "Overview of space research and development" and "Global leadership training", which are one of the full scholarship requirements.

In order to accept a diverse group of students, we will give priority to each graduate school course at Nagoya University set below;

5 students from graduate school of Science, and Mathematics

5 students from graduate school of Engineering

1 student from graduate school of Environmental Studies

[Financial support]

- Scholarship:

Basic scholarship : 85,000 JPY per month.

Full scholarship: 150.000 JPY per month for qualified students from the doctoral course.

- Other support:

Internships expense (Overseas and Corporations)

Travel expense for international meetings, Research grants, etc.

It's necessary to take additional courses for this program in addition to the curriculum

in your major.

[Application Procedure]

[3] Copy of the transcript in both undergraduate and graduate courses (Submit the document in PDF format under your responsibility)

[4] Reference (by your supervisor at Nagoya University)

*Automatic E-mail request for a reference will be sent to the supervisor designated by the applicant in the application form. The reference needs to be submitted by the supervisor using either Japanese or English form.

[Application Period]

February 23 (Monday) to February 28 (Saturday), 2015

The deadline for submission is February 28 (Saturday), 2015 at 5:00 PM.

The deadline for submitting your supervisor’s reference is March 2 (Monday), 2015 at

5:00 PM. Be sure to remind your supervisor of the date.

[Selection Process]

Applicants will be selected on the basis of their aspirations detailed in the application form, the reference by the applicant's supervisor, and the results of their interview.

Applicants are evaluated by the following points: aspirations for this program, prospects of exercising international leadership in space related industry after completing this program, applicants' vision of leadership, basic academic skills, logical thinking, simplicity and persuasiveness of explanation, communication skills, and English proficiency.

[Interview]

Interview will be held on either 10 th or 11 th March, 2015, at Nagoya University. Please indicate the inconvenient time slots in the application. If you are not available all the dates shown above , the interview will be carried out over Skype. If it is the case, indicate your Skype name and inconvenient time slots for the Skype interview. *The time slots are from 8:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Japan standard time).

At the interview, you will be asked about the contents in your application form and related matters in either Japanese or English; and then, "question and answer" session will follow.

[Other notes]

 Financial aid is provided by means of a scholarship as a default. You cannot receive the scholarship with any other scholarships at the same time such as

from Japan Student Services Organization and/or other agencies. Students who would like to receive other scholarships and financial aid, may choose to be employed as Research Assistant (RA) to receive the financial aid. In this case, note that you may not get paid as RA during your business travel if it is not related to the program. Please contact us for more details.

 Please be forewarned that we may be forced to reduce or terminate the financial aid if our funding agency reduces or cuts off subsidies for this program.
