Online Nursing Department RN-BSN Scholarships
Criteria
The University of North Alabama College of Nursing (CON) will award 2 scholarships to RN-BSN students
each Fall, Spring, and Summer semester. One scholarship will be based on financial need and one will be
merit-based. An application must be submitted for each type of scholarship and a type-written essay must
accompany the application. Need-based applicants must either submit a copy of the page from the most recent
1040 form that has the adjusted gross income, or indicate that a FAFSA is on file with the University.
Applications will be submitted by March 15 for Summer scholarships, June 15 for Fall scholarships and
October 15 for Spring scholarships.
The application will be posted online. The applicant must print the application and must submit the application
and essay by mail to the Online Nursing Department, UNA Box 5127, Florence, AL 35632.
The amount of each scholarship is $1,000.00. Only one scholarship will be awarded to a given student each
semester. A student may not receive a scholarship based on financial need and a merit-based scholarship within
the same semester. However, a student may apply for both scholarships during the same semester. A student
who has received a scholarship may re-apply for a scholarship during additional semesters. It is important to
know that any act of academic dishonesty will void recipient of the scholarship.
Students enrolled part-time or full-time, in any combination of nursing and required academic courses, may
apply for the scholarships; however, applications of full-time students will be given priority. To be eligible
for a scholarship, RN to BSN students must have completed a minimum of 12 hours at UNA. The only
exception to this is that students admitted in the summer who complete the full-time summer course load of 6
hours will be eligible to apply for a scholarship for the spring semester by October 15.
Merit scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. To be
eligible for a merit based scholarship a student must have demonstrated superior academic ability by
maintaining a UNA GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. A minimum of a 3.0 UNA GPA on a 4.0 scale is required to be
eligible for a financial need scholarship.
Please note that the transfer GPA may be used for additional information when selecting scholarship recipients,
if necessary.
Criteria for the essay:
1 – The essay must be type-written according to APA format (related to margins, spacing, font, etc).
2 - The essay must be at least one page but no more than two pages of text.
3 - The essay must address the topic: “Why I deserve this scholarship?”
If you are applying for the need-based scholarship you should address any information, not included on the
application, which you think might be helpful to the committee.
