Executive Director
Youth Service Bureau, Inc.
Since 1976, Youth Service Bureau, Inc. (YSB) has served the St. Croix Valley region,
performing the challenging work of holding youth accountable for actions without
sending them through the juvenile detention system or labeling them as
“delinquents.” The agency is committed to helping youth and families learn the skills
they need to be successful at home, in school, and throughout the community at
large. YSB gives youth and families the support they need at the first sign of
challenges so that they may avoid more significant consequences in the future. YSB
also meets the needs of youth, families, and communities by providing counseling
and early intervention programs.
YSB serves approximately 2,000 teens and their families throughout the St. Croix
Valley with 14 staff members, volunteers, and an annual budget of $1.2 million. The
organization has offices in Cottage Grove, Stillwater, and Woodbury. Learn more at

Youth Service Bureau is looking for a new Executive Director (ED) to continue the
40-year legacy of successful work with youth and their families. It is widely
respected in this regard, and is also in strong financial health thanks to the current
ED who will be retiring in the spring of 2016. This is a wonderful opportunity for an
individual to grow and build upon the organization’s position and reputation.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
YSB is looking for an executive leader who is
 Committed and passionate about youth, their families, and the work of the
organization
 A relationship-builder and partner who mobilizes key stakeholders across
the community to advance the organization’s mission and vision
 Comfortable and confident being the external presence of YSB in the greater
community
 A skilled, pragmatic leader of a team responsible for designing and delivering
results-oriented programming and community outcomes
 At the same time, both thoughtful and critical when solving problems and
making decisions, building consensus among key stakeholders
PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Executive Director works in partnership with the Board of Directors and staff to
provide leadership, vision, and direction for YSB, and to develop organizational
strategy. The ED implements policies approved by the Board, manages YSB’s
programs and operations and represents YSB in the community. Specifically, the ED
will
 Help form, articulate, and operationalize the vision of YSB, expanding the
organization’s focus and impact
 Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and
services that support the mission and vision of YSB
 Lead the Board and staff in developing a realistic annual budget and making
financial decisions consistent with the budget as approved by the Board
 Lead fundraising efforts, including supporting the Board’s involvement in
fundraising, personally cultivating and soliciting donors, and supervising
implementation of fundraising plans and policies approved by the Board.
 Build positive relationships on behalf of YSB with community leaders,
partner organizations, elected officials, media, and others
 Represent YSB by participating in key associations and organizations, serving
on committees and advisory groups, and speaking in public forums
 Develop staff to efficiently and effectively deliver programs and services,
accomplish major organizational goals, and grow YSB’s influence in the
region
 Hire and manage staff, including implementing a performance management
system to help staff achieve key responsibilities and develop in their roles
 Conduct financial analyses, review trends, provide timely financial
statements, and engage the Board in discussions about organizational
financial stability and sustainability
 Plan for adequate cash flow to cover operational needs
 Maintain adequate operating reserves
 Comply with all local, state, and federal legal requirements
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
 Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
Experience
 7 years experience in a senior leadership or executive role, preferably in a
nonprofit, social services, or community-based organization
 Experience working with a Board of Directors
 Demonstrated ability in developing and managing budgets
Important Skills and Characteristics
 Desire and ability to grow YSB’s reputation and increasing its ability to
generate income from contracts and donations
 Ability to manage several physical locations (Cottage Grove, Stillwater,
Woodbury)
 Proven ability to build and develop a team
 Thinking critically and problem-solving creatively
 Confident in a variety of fundraising settings
 A champion of youth, families, and the community
COMPENSATION
Compensation is competitive for a nonprofit social services organization, and is
commensurate with experience and qualifications.
