Emerging Personality Disorder Network Meeting 24.03.2015 – St. Andrew’s Present: Cesar Lengua (telephone conference) Enys Delmage (chair) Boris Iankov Kike Ogunboye (ST6) Oliver White (telephone conference) David Kingsley (telephone conference) Apologies: Heidi Hales, Albert Okoye, Alison Westman, Simon Hill Minutes ED provided a brief description of the group for those unable to attend the previous meeting. ED asked for any updates from the group and we discussed the AFPSIG which is now being chaired by Heidi Hales. It is unclear who will take over the research role within the SIG that Heidi previously occupied. ED and DK fed back on the British and Irish Group of the Study of Personality Disorder (BIGSPD) – there was a conference held in Leeds (04.03.15-06.03.15) at which DK and his team presented twice and ED presented once – the joint presentation covered adolescent brain development and some consequences of early life trauma, as well as some service models for managing these kinds of patients. The presentation was well-received and DK collected a list of signatures from people interested in being involved in EPD. ED has contacted Steve Pearce (previous president of BIGSPD) and has also contacted Tom Mullen and Kath Lovell (current shared presidents of BIGSPD) to enquire as to whether there is scope for a “Little SPD” to sit within the main BIGSPD group and have a regular slot for presentations, a role within their board, etc. Steve emailed back but ED is still awaiting a response from Tom and Kath. ED has also made contact with Richard Church in relation to FCAMHS and whether there is scope for interface with that eResource – Richard was encouraging in relation to this so it represents a network opportunity that we could potentially make use of. ED also discussed Sue Bailey’s EPD day at the Royal College which he attended with CL (10.02.2015) which covered the CAPSS studies, an RCT of functional family therapy for young offenders, mental health needs and neurodisability in young offenders, personalised treatments for severe conduct disorder and a community service’s approach, as well as a presentation from Sue Bailey relating that conduct disorder was “everyone’s business”. ED also discussed the proposed CAMHS Strategic Planning Tool (attached) which may have implications for our population group and may need some thought as to how we can work with it. ED also discussed the current clozapine research happening at Bluebird (Southampton) and St Andrew’s (Northampton) which should be completed by June 2015. The group also briefly discussed sharing good practice – naming the problems/sensitivities that we might face and also coherent ways around the obstacles. There is certainly a clinical will which overcomes market sensitivities in terms of describing helpful treatment approaches and working collaboratively between units. AFPSIG feedback from the last one CL chaired – it was felt that the AFPSIG needs to inform its members of things more effectively – a news bulletin was queried. A group interest in involvement in political activity (at the level of the Royal College exec) was also highlighted. The group also felt that there was an opportunity to compare services around the country – how to liaise and network, how to seek advice and consult, etc. Knowledge of SIG members and their location was also requested and was seen to be a helpful resource. ED outlined a need to allocate tasks for the group, for the future: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) Describe Terms of Reference (?ED); BIGSPD involvement to be taken forward (?ED); Research coordinator for the EPD group (?); Building the link with FCAMHS (?); Group members to put themselves forward for presentations – CAMHS, QNIC, YJB (All); Relevant conference and publications feedback for the group (All) which can be stored as an eResource for everyone; 7) Areas of influence to be pooled – this may be special interest areas, political engagements, research links, international contacts with similar interests and so forth (All); 8) Identification of good teaching resources for medical students/general public – previous presentations etc – could keep a database of these too – for example, EPD in films or books, etc. – recent films that have done this well: “Starred Up”, Ill Manors Next meeting date: 20th May 2015, at Cheadle Royal (hosted by DK). Post Script note: Dr. Anna Pascall and Sameer Awadalla from Ebbw Vale (low secure adolescent inpatient service in Wales) have been contacted by ED and are keen to join so will be invited to future meetings and sent the minutes of the same. Ebbw Vale manages 13-18 year olds and the predominant diagnosis is one of EPD.
