Old Glory 2014 I & II Endurance Ride
The INAUGURAL Parrie Haynes Ranch Ride!
And
A TERA "Members Benefit" Ride
Saturday May 24th & Sunday 25th, 2014
Parrie Haynes Ranch; 13816 North Maxdale Road, Killeen, TX 76549
AERC Sanctioned - TERA Sponsored
To the Worldwide Endurance Riding Community,
You are invited and encouraged to attend the INAUGURAL Parrie Haynes Endurance Ride, to be held at the
beautiful Parrie Haynes Ranch, just south of Killeen, Texas, on May 24th and 25th, 2014. Having spoken with
many of you, I know that there has been great interest in having a ride at this location for some time. Since we
are now able to utilize the trails on both the eastern half and western half of the ranch, we now have enough
trail mileage to conduct an endurance ride! Please join us for what I hope will be the first of many rides at this
venue!

Endurance riding is an athletic event for both horse and rider. The goal is to complete the marked trails within
the time given as established by AERC standards with an equine that is fit to continue from checkpoint to
checkpoint. Equines must pass a complete vet check before, during and after the ride.

Control Veterinarians: Val Bixler, DVM; Matt Randall, DVM; Gail Conway, DVM; and Kris Anderson DVM

Campsite: Parrie Haynes Ranch (PHR) is centrally located, within 3 to 4 hours of the Houston, North Texas,
and San Antonio metropolitan areas. It is one hour north of Austin and 13 miles south of Killeen. The east
side is home to the Equestrian Center and campground, where our headquarters and camping will be located.
The Center is positioned on a ridge with gentle breezes and beautiful views of the Hill Country. It includes a
clubhouse, where we will hold our ride and award meetings and adjacent restrooms with shower facilities.
There are a number of horse pens and hookups available; please contact Ona Trubee at (254) 394-0330 or
spottedhorselivery@gmail.com for more information. (NOTE: While the ranch use fee is included in your entry
fee, the cost of any pens and hookups is not - you must make these arrangements directly with Ona and pay
her separately.) The large field just south of the entrance road will accommodate many trailers and primitive
campers. In short, we should have room for a very big crowd, so Y'ALL COME!!
All guests will need to sign a Parrie Haynes Ranch liability release upon entering the facility. A negative
Coggins Test within the past 12 months is also required for all equines entering the ranch. A current health
certificate is required for all out of state equines. We will have several "poop piles" set up in the camping area;
you will be asked to cart your manure to these facilities. Wheelbarrows will be available for this purpose.
For more information on the Equestrian Center at Parrie Haynes Ranch, please visit
http://www.parriehaynesequestriancenter.com/ or contact Ona at the number above.
Killeen, TX: Almost everyone knows that Killeen is the home of Fort Hood, home of the First Cavalry Division
and other large Army detachments. Killeen is a fairly large and diverse city which will have just about any
goods and services you might need.
Trails: We will be using both the east side and west side trails at Parrie Haynes. The terrain is varied, a
couple of steep places but also sections where riders can move out. It is rocky in some areas, and the rocks
tend to be more loose than, say, Bandera. In one sentence, the trails can be described as something of a
cross between C Bar Ranch and Bandera: not quite as steep as the canyons at C Bar; a little rockier than
Bandera; and ample sections to move out. HOOF PROTECTION IS STRONGLY ADVISED! I would describe
the event as a RIDE and not a RACE. All vet checks will be in camp. Loop lengths, hold times and veterinary
criteria will be discussed at the pre-ride meetings.
There are no cattle on the ranch, but you may see a few deer, an occasional snake, or some feral pigs. There
may be common honeybees at the water troughs, and if you don't bother them, they won't bother you. Bring
allergy medicine if you think you might need it.
Meals: Supper will be provided Saturday night for Saturday & Sunday riders. Non- riders may eat for an $8.00
donation. All meals will be provided for staff and workers.
Intro Riders: The Intro Ride offers an opportunity for newcomers (riders and/or equines) to see what
endurance is all about. Intro riders will complete a loop of approximately 10-15 miles and have a pre-and postride vet check. There is no minimum or maximum time for completion. There are no point or mileage
accumulations, no placement awards, no best condition judging, nor are results reported to AERC for Intro
Riders. However if your horse successfully completes the ride, you will receive a completion award and have
had the opportunity to experience the sport of endurance. Intro Riders are required to have a current, negative
Coggins. If you don’t plan to camp Friday night but plan to ride on Saturday, please attend the Friday Night
Pre-Ride Meeting because it will be very beneficial in understanding the sport and outline of the ride.
Junior Riders: AERC rules pertaining to Junior riders apply to all distances (including Intro Riders). A Junior
rider is under 16 years old. Junior riders must wear protective headgear while on horseback in and out of
camp and be accompanied by an adult sponsor. Riders must notify ride management before the ride who their
adult sponsor will be.
Entry Fees: This is a TERA "Members Benefit" Ride! For this year's Old Glory ride, the TERA Board has
authorized a $15 discount from last year's Old Glory entry fees for both 25 and 50 mile riders, for TERA
members in good standing. The Ride Secretary will be checking to ensure that riders claiming the discount are
entitled to it, so make sure your TERA membership is current.
The entry fees are as follows:
Intro 10-12 miles - $40
25 miles - $65
50 miles - $85
One discount per person, per ride please. Intro rider fees are already discounted.
Entry Instructions:
Please make checks payable to “TERA” (if riding both days please include separate checks for each day). Mail completed
entry and a copy of negative Coggins to:
Vicki Hudson
13002 Lakeside Terrace Dr
Houston, TX 77044
Checks will not be cashed until after the ride. All ride fees are refundable if you do not start the ride. Please
help ride management and pre-register by May 15th, 2014. If you mail your entry AFTER May 15th ride
management may not receive it in time. Completed entrants will not have to stand in line to fill out paperwork.

As a participant of the Old Glory 2014 I & II
endurance ride, I ___________________________
agree to abide by the rules of AERC, TERA and the
ride management. I understand that endurance riding
involves being in remote areas for extended periods
of time, far from communications, transportation, and
medical facilities; that these areas have many natural
and man-made hazards, which ride management
cannot anticipate, identify, modify, or eliminate; that
horses are excitable, difficult to control and
unpredictable; and that accidents can happen to
anyone at any time. I agree to take full responsibility
for myself and the animal I am riding/handling. I will
hold the ride management, all ride personnel, and all
property owners over whose land the ride crosses
blameless for any accident, injury or loss that might
occur due to my participating in the ride, and free
from all liability for such injury or loss.

Old Glory 2014 I & II Ride Rules:
1. All AERC& TERA rules will apply.
2. The equines are under the control of experienced ride veterinarians who will do everything possible to
help you evaluate your equine in order that you may complete the ride without hurting your equine;
However, you must accept responsibility for your equine and yourself. The vets may disqualify any rider
who has, in the opinion of the vets, abused his/her equine. The veterinarian’s decision will be final in all
matters concerning the safety and well being of the equines entered in the ride.
3. Proof of a negative Coggins test dated within 12 months for Texas and out-of-state equines is
mandatory. Each equine entering the camping area should have the yellow copy. Please have a
negative Coggins test for each equine in your camp. Coggins papers may be checked at the gate.
4. The ride is open to all breeds of equines (horses, mules, ponies, etc.). The equine must be at least 60
months of age to enter the 50 mile ride. Equines entering the 25 mile limited distance ride must be at
least 48 months of age.
5. A junior rider is a rider who was under the age of 16 as of December 1, 2013. Juniors must be
accompanied by a competent adult sponsor entered in the ride and must list the sponsor on the entry
form and must finish within one minute of the sponsor. Failure of either to wait on the other will result in
the loss of completion to both riders. Sponsors may be changed only at vet checks and only with the
approval of ride management. AERC ruling for 14-16 year old/ 500-mile completion can apply if
management has a copy of the AERC letter. ALL JUNIORS ENTERED IN THE RIDE MUST WEAR
APPROVED SAFETY HELMETS WHILE ON HORSEBACK regardless of ride entry status.
6. All riders must be present and accounted for at the start of the ride. Management strongly recommends
ALL riders wear approved safety helmets while on horseback.
7. The same horse and rider must pass all checkpoints, follow the ride rules, stay on the marked trail and
do the loops in the correct order to receive completion. 50-mile placing will be determined by first horse
across the finish line. Ties recognized only if management cannot determine placement. ALL equines
must see a Vet for completion check or when pulling for any reason.
8. Vet criteria (pulse/respiration requirements, holds, etc.) will be discussed at the pre-ride meeting.
Riders are responsible for understanding this information. All equines in each distance MUST meet
ride criteria within 30 minutes of reaching a vet check during the ride or be disqualified.
9. There is no minimum time limit for completion in any distance. Maximum ride time, INCLUDING
HOLDS, for completion is 12 hours for 50 milers and 6 hours for 25 milers. To receive completion: the
50 mile rider may present his equine at any time during, but not longer than, one hour after crossing the
finish line; 25 milers must present within 60 minutes of reaching camp and ride time does not stop until
equine has met ride criteria. The equine of all distances must be metabolically fit to continue and have
no gait aberrations that are consistently observable at a trot and must have a pulse of 64 or less; pulse
of 60 or less for 25 milers. Riders will dismount for completion trot. For Best Condition judging, equines
must present for a 15-minute CRI, then a one hour post-ride check – 15 minute CRI time measured
from the finishing time. To be eligible for Best Condition Award, riders must weigh before leaving vet
check area.
10. Riders are responsible for all farrier and vet fees that may be individually incurred.
11. During the ride, dogs are to be on a leash or confined to rider’s camp.
12. Have a Fun and SAFE ride. “To Finish Is To Win”
DIRECTIONS TO PARRIE HAYNES RANCH
Directions From the North:
Take I-35 to US Highway 190 West on the south side of Belton. Proceed to Killeen, and exit at
State Highway (SH) 195. Proceed south on SH 195 to Clear Creek Road (also FM 205), about
3.5 miles from the SH 195 exit. Proceed west on Clear Creek/FM201 to Maxdale Road, about
1.1 miles. Turn left (south) on Maxdale Road and proceed to the entrance to PHR, about 3.1
miles. As you approach the PHR entrance, you will see a bright yellow fence on your right. The
entrance to PHR is to the right; you will see a sign at the entrance.
Note: You may know that there is major road construction on I-35 between Waco and Temple,
and north of Waco between Waco and Abbott. The construction north of Waco is fairly
manageable, but south of Waco can only be described as a nightmare. The road shifts in spots
with little warning, and drivers do not slow down. Be careful in this area, especially if you are
pulling a large trailer, and just be patient - you'll get there. As an alternative, you might consider
taking US 84 west in Waco to McGregor, and then SH 317 south to Belton. But in my opinion,
this will lengthen your trip without any measurable advantages. If you are coming from
northwest of the Metroplex, consider US 281 south and then take US 190 east in Lampasas to
SH 195 in Killeen.
Alas, there is also road construction on US 190 as you begin to enter Killeen. You may
encounter it several miles from the SH 195 exit; it is hard to know what the status will be in late
May. Again, just be patient and you'll get through it.
Directions from the South (Houston, Austin, and the Southeast):
Find your own way to the I-35/SH 195 intersection just north of Georgetown. Proceed north on
SH 195, about 23 miles. Just after you cross the Lampasas River, turn west (left) on Farm
Road (FR) 2670. Proceed 3.6 miles to Maxdale Road; turn right (there is a sign denoting "N.
Maxdale Road"). Proceed 2.4 miles to the entrance to PHR, which is on your left. NOTE: the
PHR sign faces to the north, not the south, so you will have to watch for the entrance. If you
pass the yellow fence on the left you have gone too far.
Directions from the San Antonio area and the Southwest:
Proceed north on US 281 to Lampasas. Turn right (east) on US 190 to Killeen, and then right
(south) on SH 195. Proceed south on SH 195 to Clear Creek Road (also FM 205), about 3.5
miles from the SH 195 exit. Proceed west on Clear Creek/FM201 to Maxdale Road, about 1.1
miles. Turn left (south) on Maxdale Road and proceed to the entrance to PHR, about 3.1 miles.
As you approach the PHR entrance, you will see a bright yellow fence on your right. The
entrance to PHR is to the right; you will see a sign at the entrance.
