DIVISION I RULES GOVERNING HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITS Please read carefully 1. Entries will be received from 6:00 am until 9:30 am, Saturday May 2, 2015, inside the Seaside room. No entries taken after 9:30 am. All exhibitors welcome. 2. Judging will be in accordance with the current GUIDELINES FOR JUDGING ROSES published by the American Rose Society, unless in conflict with this schedule, in which case this schedule rules. All decisions by the Judges will be final. 3. Specimens must have been grown by the exhibitor in their own private garden. Only one person or team from one garden may enter any one class. 4. Specimen Judges of the horticultural classes of this show and members of their families may not enter specimens, with the exception of Section L, Judges Entries. 5. Classification of all roses by type will be in accordance with Modern Roses XII as modified or amended in ARS Publications to the date of the show. Only roses so registered or listed are eligible for competition. 6. All roses in the show will be arranged alphabetically. Each variety will constitute a separate class within the section and will be judged on its merits for that variety. 7. Exhibitors may make only one entry of the variety in a section. DUPLICATE ENTRIES WILL DISQUALIFY BOTH. 8. Specimen entries of climbing forms of hybrid teas, grandifloras, hybrid perpetual, polyanthas, teas, floribundas, miniatures and minifloras will be entered in classes with their bush counterparts. 9. Any unwanted growth may be removed from the specimen. A penalty may be assessed according to the degree of impairment and depending on proficiency of removal. 10. American Rose Society entry cards MUST be used. Some entry cards and all specimen containers will be furnished. EXHIBITORS MUST CHECK IN AT THE REGISTRATION DESK AND SIGN THE EXHIBITOR LIST. No exhibitor number will be used. Only the top half of the entry card need be filled out. Blue or black ballpoint pen must be used; stamps or name labels are acceptable – no pencil or felt tip pens. Write rose names as large and clearly as possible for the benefit of the public. Entry tags must be securely folded before entries are placed. 11. Wedging may be added to the container to hold roses upright. However, if wedging material protrudes above the lip of the vase, the specimen will be penalized. NO FOIL OR PLASTIC WRAP. 12. Horticulture entries shall be disqualified for the following reasons a. Misnamed, misclassed, misplaced, unlabeled or mislabeled; b. Stem on stem except Old Garden Roses and Shrubs; c. Presence of foreign substance applied to foliage, stem or bloom to improve the appearance of the specimen; d. Side bud or side buds on a specimen that must be without side buds; e. A specimen not recognized by the ARS Modern Roses XII, CRL, List of Approved Exhibition Names for Exhibitor’s, and most Recent Rose Registration from ARS. 13. Only authorized personnel will be permitted in the show area during judging. 14. All exhibits become the property of CCRS upon entry into the show. 15. Trophies will be awarded at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Winners or their representatives should be present to accept their awards. Exhibitors or their representatives wishing to have ribbons must pick them up on May 2, 2015, RIBBONS WILL NOT BE MAILED. 16. Section K, Classes 42, 43 & 44 are open only to members of CCRS. Section L is open only to Judges judging this show. All other sections open to all exhibitors except Novice, Section E, which is restricted to exhibitors who have not won more than 3 blue ribbons or a trophy in an A.R.S. Judging will be in accordance with the current Guidelines for Judging Rose Arrangements. The decisions of the judges are final. Judging will begin at 10:00 am, with completion by 12:30 pm. Exhibits must be entered and in place between 6:00 am and 9:30 am, Saturday, May 2, 2015. ALL ARRANGERS ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE A RESERVATION due to the space limitations. When calling or emailing reservations leave a message with your name, phone number, and list of arrangements you wish to enter with Section, Class number and title. An exhibitor will be limited to one entry in each class or subclass, but may enter as many classes as desired. All exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor, and must be the work of a one exhibitor. Entries without prior reservations will be welcome. However, they will be placed only if space becomes available. The background at the Carlsbad by the Sea Resort is off white, table draping will also be off white. A rose or roses must be the dominant flower in all arrangements. All roses must be Outdoor grown in your garden and must be of high quality. Names of all roses in each arrangement must be written on an ARS arrangement entry tag. Rose varieties exhibited must be entered under the approved exhibition name of the American Rose Society publications. Modern Roses XII, the Official List of Approved Exhibition Names for Judges’ & Exhibitors, the Handbook for Selecting Roses or “Recent Registrations” on the ARS website. In cases where a variety is not listed in any of the above ARS publications, a listing in the Combined Rose List is acceptable. Classification of all roses shall be in accordance with the ARS publications to the date of the show. ARS Publications take priority over the Combined Rose List. 8- 9- 10- 1112- 13- 14- 15- 16- 17- In classes for arrangements using miniature roses, the arrangements must conform to the size specified in each class and ONLY those roses classified by the ARS as Miniflora or miniature may be used. Miniature and/or Miniflora roses may be used in standard arrangements, if the arranger so chooses. American Rose Society Medal Certificates may be awarded to arrangements using arranger grown, fresh roses, except for the Judges Section. AG should be written or checked on the entry tag, top right hand corner, if roses are arranger grown so the entry will be eligible for an ARS medal certificate. Accessories are allowed unless otherwise stated in the schedule. Flowers other than roses, and dried and/or treated dried plant material are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule. Natural wood (dried, treated, weathered, etc.) are considered dried plant material unless it has been made into an art object such as a statue. It is then considered as an accessory. A card of intent may be included with an arrangement as an example of the arranger’s interpretation of the theme or class title. Backgrounds or underlays may be used, if desired, but must be provided by the exhibitor. Standard arrangements are limited in space to 24 inches wide and 30 inches deep with no height restrictions, and must not overhang the table top. All miniature arrangement spaces are 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep and some are placed on risers. All backgrounds or underlay’s are a component of the design and must be to the size imitations in the show schedule. No one but the Exhibitor may touch or move his/her arrangement. However, in extreme circumstances, if all efforts to locate the arranger have failed, the arrangement chairman may carefully move an arrangement. Exhibitors are responsible for placing their own arrangements. An arrangement incorrectly placed in one class when it should have been in another will be judged in the class in which it is placed. Plant material other than roses may be commercially grown. All roses must be fresh outdoor grown, except for those in the Keepsake and Miniature Keepsake classes, which specify dried roses and dried plant materials. Blue ribbon (first place) winners must score 92 or higher to be eligible for American Rose Society Awards. Only blue ribbon winners that specify AG are eligible for ARS Medals. Arrangers’ names should be placed on the bottom of containers, etc. All reasonable care will be taken, but the Show Committee and the 18- 1920- 2122- 23- California Coastal Rose Society will not be responsible for loss or damage to arrangements, containers, or accessories, etc. Arrangement Judges who are judging arrangements in this show may ONLY exhibit in the Judges Arrangement Section or Judges Horticulture Section. Novices and juniors are not limited to those Sections, and indeed are encouraged to enter any class except in the Judges Section. Arrangements, containers, ribbons, and other properties must be claimed on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 5:30 pm.
