Background and Purpose: 1.1 The actual practice of major and minor GPA calculation was established within the Registrar’s Office as a procedure. It involved calculation of GPA within a major or minor based on minimum credits taken to fulfill the major or minor. Once those credits were fulfilled no other credits were counted within the major/minor GPA. 1.2 When Chairs realized that this was the practice, they asked governance through the Dean of Faculties to review this practice and establish a university-wide major/minor GPA calculation policy. Faculty Senate charged UAAC with researching this issue and proposing such a policy. II. Current Policy Language: None III. Draft Policy Statement: 3.1 Major and minor grade point average (GPA) calculation shall be based on all coursework attempted (this excludes “I,” “IP,” “NC” and “W” grades) in residence that applies to the respective major or minor. There is no limitation placed on the number of credits that are used in this calculation. 3.2 The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Repeated Coursework Policy (AP1206) will be enforced for this calculation. For example, if a student repeats a required course within a major, it will be the most recent grade that is used in the major GPA calculation. 3.3 The major/minor GPA only includes pre-requisite coursework when it has been included in the major/minor as a requirement. This also applies to coursework required to get into the major/minor. 3.3 Departments may apply additional coursework to the major/minor by notifying the Registrar’s Office. Department chair approval is required. 3.4 This is the GPA that will be used for graduation eligibility (2.00, while in residence) within the major or minor. A given major or minor may require a higher GPA for graduation eligibility as specified in the catalog. IV. Policy Procedures: 4.1 This policy goes into effect for the 2014-2016 catalog. Before that time the Registrar’s Office (Jami Koivisto) can work on a case-by-case basis with student GPA calculation 4.2 The GPA calculation will be visible upon advising reports and labeled as such. 4.3 Implementation is to be managed within the Registrar’s Office. 4.4 Department chairs are to submit a Course Exception/Equivalency Form to the Registrar’s Office when wishing to apply additional course work to the major/minor GPA calculation.
