PRODUCTION MANAGER – tbc Autumn 2015
1. Overview
Coal’s cast is seven professional performers, four community cast members and five musicians (16
people on stage). Full cast list is supplied separately.
Production Manager plus 1 Sound/Lighting tech and Artistic Director Gary Clarke tour to all venues.
Musical Director (Steven Roberts) and Producer (Annabel Dunbar) will tour to some venues.
The running time post premiere is intended to be eighty-five minutes with a fifteen/twenty minute
interval (1 hour 40/45 mins total)
COAL is in three acts:
•
Act 1: Above Ground: The Domestic Scene/ Live Brass
•
Act 2: Below Ground: At the Coal face
•
Lively Interval
•
Act 3: The Aftermath: Full company inc community Women/ Live Brass
Latecomers can be admitted at a time agreed in advance by the Artistic Director and preferable to
available seats near the entrance rather to booked seats.
During the interval refreshments will be offered to the audience by performers in the bar (details
tbc during autumn 2015).
Filming or photography may be permitted but only with prior consent from the company.
GCC reserves the right to make archive documentation of their show at any time.
2. Staging
Performance Space:
Preferably 10m x 10m but can perform in smaller spaces i.e. 9m by 9m and 8m by 8m with wing
space. Please call to discuss spaces smaller than 10m x 10m in more detail.
Dance Floor:
We tour a black dance floor 10m x 10m.
Back wall:
The show ideally uses an uncovered black back wall, with film projected onto the wall.
We understand that some back walls are not suitable for this and may require a black back-cloth.
We will discuss venue specifics with you.
Set and props:
We tour a number of small props, a table, a blackboard and a push bike.
Coal is also used on stage in the production – please see risk assessments.
Smoking on Stage:
The story of the miner’s wife in act 3 calls for smoking on stage and makes reference to this a
number of times. In the spirit of remaining true to the characters portrayed, and following
discussion with the cast we decided to use real cigarettes as opposed to electronic ones.
2
There is one cigarette smoked and is lit by a match (see risk assessment)
3. Rehearsal space:
We also require 4 days of additional rehearsal space (10m x 10m minimum with sprung floor) for
Brass & Community cast plus professionals as follows:
- Pre Get in: Weekend before performances for intensive rehearsals with the local cast of
community women – detail to be negotiated by GCC Producer and Venue Programmer
- Day 1 (get in) 10.00 – 17.00 and /or 17.00 – 22.00: professional cast pm/eve, Brass & community
women (timings may change for each venue dependent on local brass and community women’s
availability)
- Day 2 (performance day)
10.00 – 13.00
4. Lighting
Please see attached lighting plan and detail.
We may tour a lighting desk to some venues as required and will discuss with you. Ideally we would
like a production position in the auditorium for plotting and then relocate into your standard
control position.
We require 2 Haze machines ideally positioned upstage left and right controlled by DMX.
We tour all colour and gobos.
Secondary Lighting: COAL features some very low lighting states and a lot of spill from venues’
secondary lighting could affect the look and feel of the performance. Please contact us to discuss
any potential problems regarding this.
5. Sound:
Sound source is Qlab with sound card. Four sends front of House left and right (stereo mix if
possible) and left and right rear of house.
We also require stage monitors left and right taken from the main Left and Right feeds.
Sound position in your usual control room or in the auditorium if there are windows that cannot
open in this room.
6. Projection
COAL includes a projected film section in Act 3. This requires a projector, preferably 10K Lumen
(minimum 6k), which will take a VGA from our laptop.
3
Projection image is approx. 8m wide (16:9) on the back wall.
Blackout card is required with DMX control.
7. Technical Team and local crew requirements:
We tour with two crew - Production Manager and Technician. One of the performers (Eleanor
Perry, who plays Thatcher which is a smaller part, looks after wardrobe with some ASM duties).
We require at least 3, preferably 4 local crew depending on theatre facilities. Crew will be required
to help load in and with general tasks such as laying our dance floor but the onus will be on rigging
the lighting and helping us input into your sound system.
Performance team:
COAL’s team operate both lighting and sound and require a stage manager stage left and stage
right. Main duties are cuing on the band at the start of the show and receiving props in the wings.
There are very few cues and these will be explained during the set-up and rehearsed before the
show. We require comms for sound and lighting positions and stage left and right wings (ideally
these would be radio comms or on long leads).
