#textbookbrokeBC is a campaign aimed at informing students about Open Textbooks, Open Educational
Resources, and alternatives to traditional textbooks. It is also aimed at raising awareness of the way students can be involved in providing feedback on their course material, and in the conversations surrounding open access and accessibility. Ultimately the campaign aims to raise awareness and inform students to advocate for more accessible educational resources.
The campaign has students take pictures with their textbook receipts with the hashtag
#textbookbrokeBC. They then will instagram their own picture, and the AMS will take a picture and post on social media. As they do this, there will be an information booth on OERs and a few examples of
Open Textbooks. We will be handing out bookmarks that we are creating, as well as giving out information on BC Campus, the UBC Bookstore, resources on campus, and AMS next steps for OER promotion.
The student campaign #textbookbrokeBC will run the first week back to school, engaging students as they purchase their books. There will be #textbookbrokeBC bookmarks at other events throughout the first few weeks of classes. This will be held at a table directly outside of the UBC Bookstore.
There will be graphics created to promote the campaign, as well as bookmarks created. All graphics will be open access, for other student societies and groups to use them.
A.
General Graphics
A general poster is to be made with #textbookbrokeBC, and
“
How much did you spend on textbooks this year?
”
It will then have a piece about what is being done both at the AMS and
UBC already in regards to affordability of educational resources.
B.
Bookmark
The bookmark will feature
“
I just spent ___ on textbooks #textbookbrokeBC.
”
It will then have a link/webpage that will discuss what is being done both at the AMS and UBC already in regards to affordability of educational resources. This bookmark will feature both the SFSS and AMS logos.
The AMS will be working with the following partners on Open Educational Resource initiatives:
A.
Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS)
B.
UBC Bookstore
C.
Open UBC Week
Exhaustive resources are not needed, however we will be getting support from other divisions within the AMS, as well as student groups (clubs, constituencies
…
). The AMS VP Academic & University Affairs
Office will print all materials, and work with the VP Admin portfolio and First Week for volunteers to be at the booth. The AMS will need the UBC Bookstore to provide space during the first week in front of the bookstore to engage students, and will work to showcase the steps that the bookstore is taking to encourage faculty members to think about alternatives to textbooks, and to encourage faculty to facilitate the bookstore finding affordable options for students.
