CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Jockey Club Academy Hall (Hall 4) Academian Scholarships 2012-2013 Regulations Jockey Club Academy Hall is committed to whole-person education. To recognize residents’ outstanding pursuit of the Academian culture, i.e. Academic Excellence, Balanced Development and Community Citizenship, a scholarship scheme is established with the following regulations for this academic year: 1. The Scholarships are known as "Jockey Club Academy Hall Academian Scholarships". 2. The maximum amount of scholarships awarded each year, irrespective of the number of awards, shall not exceed the amount of FIVE times the hall fee of one semester of double-room occupancy in the following academic year (i.e. 2013/14, hereafter “the Subsequent Academic Year”. 3. Payment shall be arranged for the scholarship recipients by offsetting in PART of in FULL of the recipients’ hall fee as required for Semester A or Semester B, whichever is appropriate. If the scholarship recipient is not required to pay for the hall fee in the Subsequent Academic Year, the hall-fee grant will automatically be forfeited. 4. Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for the Scholarships, an applicant must meet the following requirements: i. ii. iii. iv. v. Be a resident of Jockey Club Academy Hall at the time of application; and Has resided in Jockey Club Academy Hall for at least one full semester at the time of application (summer term excluded);and Will continue to reside in Jockey Club Academy Hall in the Subsequent Academic Year; Has not breached any University or Hall regulations; and Be a non-final year student at the time of application. 5. Assessment Criteria i. The assessment criteria for awarding the Scholarships are in alignment with the ‘ABC’ Academian culture of the Hall. They include but are not limited to the following: A – Academic Excellence measured by the GPA(≥ 3.0) in Semester A of the year of application (i.e. 2012/13, hereinafter “the Application Year”) and/or significant academic improvement measured by the change in GPA in the Application Year and the immediate preceding year; B – Balanced Development in intellectual, social, aesthetic, physical and moral life, measured by the Academian Index based on participation in activities organized by the Student Residence Office, the Residence Tutors and the Residents’ Association; and C – Community Citizenship measured by good conduct and outstanding contributions to building a supportive living and learning 1 environment in the Hall. 6. Conditions of Award Acceptance: i. The scholarship scheme is not applicable to those residents whose hall fees have already been covered by any other scholarship/award scheme. ii. The scholarship recipient is required to reside in one of the semesters in Jockey Club Academy Hall in the Subsequent Academic Year and will be expected to actively participate in hall life and organize academic-related activities in the Subsequent Academic Year and work closely with the hall management team to promote academic excellence and balanced development. iii. Should a scholarship recipient subsequently fail to meet the requirements as stated in the Regulations of Hall Scholarships or violate the Code of Student Conduct, Regulations at Student Residence, or the Hall Rules of Jockey Club Academy Hall, the Scholarship Selection Panel or the Residence Master reserves the right to withdraw the award of scholarships at any time of the year, including the Subsequent Academic Year. iv. With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each scholarship recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Giving Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008. 7. Procedures and Time Schedule for the Scholarships: The procedures for awarding the Scholarships consist of the following three stages: 7.1 Application: i. Interested applicants should submit: a) A completed application form (available on-line and at the Student Residence Office); and b) A written recommendation from his/her Residence Tutor ii. All application information has to be submitted to the Residence Master of Jockey Club Academy Hall (mailbox# 12A) no later than the announced deadline. Late applications will not be considered. 7.2 Selection Interview: i. Short-listed candidates may be requested to attend an interview with a selection panel on a date to be announced. ii. The selection panel will comprise the Residence Master of Jockey Club Academy Hall or her designate, Director of SRO or her designate, a staff member of the University, and no more than two other members invited either from within or outside the University. 7.3 Results Announcement: i. Results will be announced before the end of the Semester B of the Application Year. ii. All decisions by the Selection Panel are final. No further appeals will be accepted.
