I am Keith McCord. It’s great to be with you. [Intense, dramatic] The sponsors and volunteer committee members of the Business Model Competition are pleased to welcome you to the 2011 Business Model Competition Final Event. Thank you for joining us today to witness crowning of the Durant Pivot Prize, otherwise known as First Place. We have a fun, great afternoon planned for you. We will hear from the four finalist companies and then crown a winner. Before we get started, I would like to introduce you to some of our distinguished guests: First, let’s have all of the officers, staff, and special committee of our host organization, the BYU Rollins Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology stand and be recognized. Thank you for all the work you put into this. Let’s also recognize the deans of the Marriott School who are here with us today. We’d also like to recognize the generous sponsors for this event: Cornerstone Technologies, producers of tonight’s event. Thanks guys! Gavin Christensen of Kickstart Seed Fund Now, let’s turn to the judges for today’s finals. BMC FINAL EVENT Show Flow & Script Page 4 Time Presenter Script It is with great pleasure that we present to you the author of the game-changing book, The Four Steps to the Epiphany, used in many classes at BYU, and our special guest of honor, Steve Blank. We are so pleased to have you with us today. [If Alex Osterwalder is on Skype] Also, we have another special guest today on Skype, Alex Osterwalder, the author of Business Model Generation, a superb guide to developing a business model. 4:05 Nathan Furr Our last judge today is BYU’s own Dr. Nathan Furr, a professor in Entrepreneurship who teaches business models in his courses and brought the teachings on developing a business model and the author of a new book entitled Nail It Then Scale It. Dr. Furr devised this competition and then went to the BYU Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, where he found ample support. In fact, he is going to share a bit about this competition, how it got started, its purpose, and where it’s headed. Dr. Furr … [Nathan shares his vision, the purpose, the history, and scope of the competition] [Nathan’s words] 4:10 Keith McCord Thank you. Keith, back to you … Thanks, Nathan. Now, let’s get this show on the road! Here’s what has happened to far. The BMC, in this its inaugural year, received 45 completed submissions from teams from around the world. About 10 days ago, a large panel of judges reviewed these submissions (comprised of a PowerPoint with audio overlay telling their business model story) and selected 8 semi-finalists. This was an arduous process requiring much time and consideration. The man hours have been significant. BMC FINAL EVENT Show Flow & Script Page 5 Time Presenter Script Those not making the Top 8 were notified immediately after the decisions were made. The semifinalists were notified as well. Last Friday, three days ago, these 8 semi-finalists, some coming from across the pond (that’s the Atlantic) vied with live presentations in a closed session with a panel of judges. These judges whittled the number down to four finalists. We will now hear these live presentations from these four finalists. They have been selected to present in random order. They will be timed presentations followed by a Q&A opportunity for the judges. One last reminder to everyone – this is not a business plan competition – we are rewarding entrepreneurial teams that have come up with a hypothesis for a business model, then tested that hypothesis via target customer interaction, pivoted (changed) that business model, until they arrived at a model that would work, or they discovered there was no viable model. How they have done it is as important as what they have done. We’ll have a brief setup break between each presentation. Once all four presentations have been made, the judges will caucus in private while we hear from some speakers. The judges will then return back and announce the winner. Before I forget, these finalists are competing for the honor and the money. 4th place gets $3,000 3rd place gets $5,000 2nd place gets $10,000 1st place gets $15,000 BMC FINAL EVENT Show Flow & Script Page 6 Time Presenter Script Also, we have a $1,000 audience choice award where you the audience can select who you think should win. Once again, welcome to the Business Model Competition! Are you ready?! First up is a company called Textwaiter. The floor is yours. [Repeat the above for each till all four are done.] [2. Kalood] [3. MealDrop] [4. Gamegnat] [Give aways to the crowd during breaks.] [After each presentation …] Thank you very much. While they set up, we have some give aways … 4:15 5:15 Keith McCord Now, our next team consist of … Cycle through presentations … That brings us to the end of the four finalist presentations. Our judges will now depart for a while to make their decision. In the meantime, we have the Audience Choice Award. Please welcome to the stage, Jeff Brown [?], who will lead us in your choice. BMC FINAL EVENT Show Flow & Script Page 7 Time 5:16 Presenter 5:20 Keith McCord 5:21 5:25 Keith McCord Script [During judging …] [Poll Everywhere Audience Choice] Now, we will hear some brief remarks from Gavin Christensen of the Kickstart Seed Fund and he will be followed by Scott Petersen of the BYU Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. [During judging …] [Gavin Christensen speaks] [Scott Petersen speaks highlighting Center and the #5 through #8 teams] [Judges return] [Steve Blank comments] I hold in my hands the results. Will our judges please join us on stage. Are we ready?! In 4th place, winner of $3,000, we have ___________________________________. [They come up, get picture, award, oversized check, etc.] In3rd place, winner of $5,000, we have ___________________________________. [They come up, get picture, award, oversized check, etc.] In 2nd place, winner of $10,000, we have ___________________________________. That means that _____________________________ is our 1st Place Winner of $15,000! First, let’s get the 2nd Place winner up here. [They come up, get picture, award, oversized check, etc.] Now, our champion, _________________________________, please come up. BMC FINAL EVENT Show Flow & Script Page 8 Time Presenter Script Congratulations! [They come up, get picture, award, oversized check, etc.] Well, isn’t that wonderful! Now, you’d think we’re done, but the fun keeps coming. It’s time for our door prize drawing. We have a 42” flat screen television. Have your tickets ready.
