CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Jockey Club Humanity Hall (Hall 1) Scholarships Regulations To promote and encourage positive attitude and balance attention to academic achievement and contribution to hall life, Jockey Club Humanity Hall established a scholarship scheme. The following regulations shall apply as of 2015/16 (hereafter “award year”): 1. The Scholarships will be known as "Jockey Club Humanity Hall Scholarships". 2. The recipient of the scholarship shall be called a "Jockey Club Humanity Hall Scholar". The number of scholarships and allocation of scholarships are left entirely at the discretion of the Selection Panel. It is envisaged that no more than 6 full awards will be made each year. 3. The maximum amount of each scholarship shall not exceed the amount of hall fees payable for one semester of double-room occupancy in the following academic year, i.e. 2016/17 (hereafter “aid year”). Payment shall be made to the scholarship recipients by offsetting in PART or in FULL of the recipients’ hall fees payable for either Semester A or Semester B of the aid year, whichever is appropriate. If the scholarship recipient is not required to pay for the hall fee in the aid year, the hall- fee grant will automatically be forfeited. 4. Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for the Scholarships, an applicant must meet the following requirements: i. Good academic achievements based on: a) GPA 3.0 or above in Semester A of the award year; or b) CGPA 3.0 or above by the end of Semester A of the award year; ii. Outstanding contribution to the building of hall life; iii. Be a resident of Jockey Club Humanity Hall and has resided in Jockey Club Humanity Hall for at least one full semester (summer term excluded); iv. Will continue to reside in Jockey Club Humanity Hall in one of the semesters of the aid year; v. Be a non-final year student at the time of application; vi. Not a recipient of this scholarship in the past. 5. Conditions of Award Acceptance: i. The scholarship scheme is not applicable to those residents whose hall fees have already been covered by any other scholarship / award scheme in the aid year and those who will reach the University’s upper limit of a total amount of HK$160,000 after receiving the hall scholarship. 1 ii. iii. iv. 6. All successful scholarship recipients are required to stay for at least one more term in Jockey Club Humanity Hall in the aid year and are expected to play an active role in organizing academic-related activities. Should the scholarship recipient fail to meet the requirements as stated in the Regulations of Hall Scholarships or violate Regulations Governing Student Residence/ Hall Rules, the Scholarship Selection Panel reserves the right to withdraw the award of scholarships at any time of the year, including the aid year. With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each scholarship recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Giving Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term has been incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008. Procedures and Time Schedule for the Scholarships: The procedures for awarding the Scholarships consist of the following three stages: 6.1 Application: i. Interested applicants should submit: a) A completed application form; and b) A short English essay in 500 words to self-introduce their personal achievement and qualities; and c) A reference letter from the Residence Tutor of their floor. ii. All application information has to be submitted to the Residence Master of Jockey Club Humanity Hall via the Residence Tutor of your floor by March each year. Late submissions will not be considered. iii. All applicants will be automatically considered for the Chan Sui Hung Best Student Award and the Jockey Club Humanity Hall Alumni Association’s Whole Person Development Scholarships (WPDS). 6.2 Selection Interview: i. Short-listed candidates must attend an interview with a Selection Panel on a date to be announced. ii. The Selection Panel will comprise the Residence Master of Jockey Club Humanity Hall, two invited alumni of Jockey Club Humanity Hall, and one tutor representative of Jockey Club Humanity Hall. 6.3 Results Announcement: i. The results will be announced by May or June each year. ii. All decisions by the Selection Panel are final. No further appeals will be accepted. Last updated: 2 Oct 2015 (hc) 2 CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Jockey Club Humanity Hall Alumni Association’s Whole Person Development Scholarships (WPDS) Regulations The Jockey Club Humanity Hall Alumni Association has offered to donate $5,000 to recognize an all-rounded resident with special talents or contributions made to the Jockey Club Humanity Hall community and to encourage his/her continuous Whole Person Development through active participation and learning in residential life. The following regulations shall apply as of 2015/16 (hereafter “award year”): 1. The Scholarship shall be known as “Jockey Club Humanity Hall Alumni Association’s Whole Person Development Scholarship”. 2. There shall be one award each award year, which values a maximum of $5,000 in cash. 3. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must, at the time of nomination:i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Achieve good academic and social service achievements based on: a) GPA 3.0 or above in Semester A of the award year; or b) CGPA 3.0 or above by the end of Semester A of the award year; and Demonstrate outstanding contribution to the building of hall culture; and Be a resident of Jockey Club Humanity Hall and has resided in Jockey Club Humanity Hall for at least one full semester (summer term excluded); Will continue to reside in Jockey Club Humanity Hall in one of the semesters of the following academic year; and Be a non-final year student at the time of application. Has no other scholarship/prize/award which may already reach the University’s upper limit of a total amount of HK$140,000 after receiving the “Jockey Club Humanity Hall Alumni Association’s Whole Person Development Scholarship”. 4. Student Residence Office will invite nomination from the Residence Master of Jockey Club Humanity Hall during the selection of hall scholarship recipients of Jockey Club Humanity Hall Scholarship normally in April or May. 5. Candidates will be evaluated and nominated by the Residence Master according to demonstrated contributions to the hall community: v. Personal Management: Academic Performance, Time Management, Ability to Relate to Others – a Holistic Balance between Study, Work and Leisure; and vi. Contribution to Hall Life: Floor Participations, Hall Event Participations, Hall Organizational Work, Inter-hall Competitions, Inter-cultural Exchange, Intangible Efforts Dedicated; and 3 vii. 6. Contributions to the Wider Community: City U Organizational Work, Volunteer and Community Service, Special Contribution to his/her discipline. The results will normally be announced in May or June of the award year. 7. Conditions of Award: i. Should the award recipient fail to meet the requirements as stated in these Regulations or violate Regulations Governing Student Residence/ Hall Rules, the Student Residence Office or the Residence Master reserves the right to withdraw the award at any time of the award year. ii.
