Medical Faculties Fellowship Application Guidance: Finance and RED support for 2015/2016 This document summarises the deadlines for the major fellowship programmes and the support you can expect to receive from Finance and Research Enterprise and Development (RED) staff in preparing your application. Note: While this guidance document highlights the major programmes, it is not an exhaustive list and applicants to other funders (e.g. BHF, CRUK) can expect the same package of support outlined below. Certain schemes have more than one call per year and where those dates are available they are indicated below. Please check the funder website for dates of future rounds. External Deadlines: Please note – the university deadlines for financial and head of school submission for sign off are two weeks before the funder’s deadlines (see “internal deadlines” on the next page). Additionally even for certain funding agencies at the preliminary stage e.g. BAF, that do not require a precise costing, the preliminary proposal has to be submitted by the Account Manager, so get in touch with them. The Account Manager will be the first point of contact in finance for all Fellowship applicants, and will direct applicants to the appropriate stakeholders (e.g. RED) 3 weeks in advance of the call deadline: If needed, 2nd meetings with Account Manager to discuss progress on costings and application. 2 weeks in advance of the call deadline: Costings should be finalised and submitted for authorisation through the FEC Costing tool Updated October 2015 1 week in advance of the call deadline: Electronic applications should have been finalised and submitted. This will leave sufficient time for authorisations to be collected (Finance, Head of Department, NHS etc.) What the Account Manager can do for you: The Account Manager can answer any questions you have regarding the specific financial aspects of the Scheme, and will explain any terminology which you do not understand. When completing the costing, the Account Manager will provide a non-salary template form to help breakdown non-salary costs into the appropriate headings (to match the application forms). The Account Manager will assist with the completion of finance forms (whether paper-based or electronic) and review before submission. The Account Manager should be the hub for all questions related to completing the financial aspects of the application form. They will be able to direct you to the appropriate person if it is not them. The Account Manager coordinates both the internal and external grant application approval process (including paper, electronic or online submission systems). What RED can do for you: Research Enterprise and Development (RED) is also available to provide support to applicants. The primary contact is Jonathan Dando (Collette Sheahan from May 2016). A huge amount of information is available on our Medical Fellowships website: https://www.bris.ac.uk/red/development/opportunities/funding-for/fellowships/ RED can provide examples of past successful applications and example text and statements that are required in certain areas of the application forms. Applicants should tailor the example text to their specific circumstances in consultation with their Supervisor and Head of Section. Proposals can also be read through by RED if required, and RED can also suggest academics within the University that you could ask to review and comment on your proposals. Importantly, NIHR applications have specific sections that only the Head of School can complete, but you must provide him/her with drafts of the sections on "Access to Infrastructure", "Proposed Department" and "Institutional Support". RED can also provide advice on addressing the Intellectual Property and/or Research Governance sections of your application should this be required. For applicants that are subsequently short-listed by the Funder for interview, RED will arrange mock interviews and provide a list of typical interview questions and feedback from previous applicants.
