Hugh Morris Lang was born in Largs, Ayr, Scotland.1
He did his medical studies in Edinburgh, and a “Colloquium” in Copenhagen. 2
He received his Edinburg degree on 24 June 1799 and permission from to practice from
Copenhagen on 29 May 1800. 3
He was a medical doctor and estate owner on St. Croix,4 including Good Hope,
Mon Bijou, William, Adventure and Paradise, where he lived most of the time.5
In 1816, he had been practicing medicine for 16 years, and in that year was
associated with Drs. William Stedman and William Stevens, living at estate Paradise and
serving about 2400 blacks in the countryside. 6
He had a relationship with Lucretia Burke/Burk/Bork7/Borch8, who was born
on St. Croix in 1797, and was baptized in the Anglican Church. 9 She was the daughter of
a resident Irish man,10 and classified as a mustice.11 Prior to her marriage, she was
owned by Joseph Blake Chabert. 12 She was set free in 1814, and it was confirmed in the
Probate Court records. 13

In 1831, she was counted in the Free Colored Census in Christiansted. 14
He left St. Croix in about 1831 and returned to Largs. 15 At that time he left to
Lucretia Burke and their children, his house at 60 Queen’s Street, Christiansted.16
In October 1841, he owned estate Ruan’s Bay, West End Quarter. 17
In October 1846, he owned with W. Lang and John McCormick, estate
Adventure, Prince’s Quarter. 18
She died there in 1856. 19
On his return to Scotland, he married on 22 December 1832 in Largs, Ayr,
Scotland, to Cleland Dunlop,*who was born in 1788.20
She died in 1863 and there were no children.
He died in Largs in August 1864. 21 In his will he left to each of his children,
80,000 Rigsdaler. 22

2. Ann Eliza Lang, 23who was born on St. Croix in about 1821, was baptized in
the Anglican Church,24 and was listed as free colored. 25
She was counted in the 1831 Free Colored Census in Christiansted. 26
She was married on 12 April 1841 in the Christiansted Anglican Church to
Francis J. C. Beckett,27 who was born on Guadeloupe in about 1811 and was baptized in
the Anglican Church.28
In 1841, they were living with her mother’s home, at 60 Queen’s Street,
Christiansted.29

3. Margaret Francess30/Francis31 Lang was born in about 1824, and was
baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church, on 30 January 1825.32
She was counted in the 1831 Free Colored Census in Chistiansted. 33
She went to Scotland in 1840 to further her education. 34
She was married in Denmark to George James Zachariae, a medical doctor. 35
4. Adriana Dorothea Lang36 was born on St. Croix in about 1826 37and was
baptized in the Christiansted Anglican Church on 28 July 1827. 38 She was counted in
the 1831 Free Colored Census in Christiansted. 39
In 1841, she was living with her mother at 60 Queen’s Street, Christiansted.40
5. Isabella Dorthea Lang was born in about 1830 and was a twin to Jeanette
Adelberta Lang. 41 She was counted in the 1831 free colored census in Christiansted. 42
6. Jeannette43/Janette44 Adelberta Lang45 was born on St. Croix in about 1830
and was baptized in the Anglican Church.46 She was a twin to Isabella Dorothea Lang.47
She was counted in the Free Colored Census in Christiansted. 48
In 1841, she was living with her mother at 60 Queen’s Street, Christiansted.49

1. Andrew Lang was born on 28 September 1779 in Largs, Ayr, Scotland50 and
baptized in the Presbyterian Church.51
He arrived and became a Burgher on 27 March1800.52
As a resident of St. Croix, departed from Christiansted, on 7 July 1812, destined
for Curaçao. 53
He was married to Ellison Barnett Gray, who was born on St. Croix on 21 May
1795, and was baptized on 21 October 1796 in the St. Croix Dutch Reformed Church.54
By 1841, she was a member of the Anglican Church. 55
In October 1841, they were living at his estate Eliza’s Retreat, which Lang
owned, along with part of estate Mount Welcome and estate St. Peter. 56 At that time he
was a Knight of Dannebrog, a Major, Chief Inspector of Roads, he was the Inspector for
the King’s properties in Christiansted Jurisdiction and a participant in the Reconciling
Court.57
2. Gilbert Lang was born in Scotland in about 1783 and was baptized in the
Presbyterian Church. 58
In October 1841, he was living at estate Eliza’s Retreat, East End A Quarter,
unmarried, who was employed as a Clerk., and was serving as a Private in the
Christiansted Burgher Corps. 59
-----------------Alexander Lang was born in Ballyconnell, Ireland in about 1793 and was
baptized on 24 June 1813 in the Anglican Church. 60
On 11 May 1838, he received a Burgher Certificate. 61
In October 1846, he was living at estate Mt. Pleasant, Prince’s Quarter,
unmarried, employed as the estate Manager and a Private in the Prince’s Life Squadron.62
-------------------John Lang, who was a resident of St. Croix, departed Christiansted on 27 April
1813, destined for Glasgow.63

He died on 20 June 1863 of consumption at the age of 48 years, unmarried, a
Planter, and he was buried in the Anglican Churchyard, Frederiksted.72
