Counselor’s Newsletter
From the Desk of Brook Fleshman, Guidance Counselor
La Plata High School - 660-332-7001 - January 21, 2013
Hello Students and Parents!
In October I started this newsletter to help seniors and their parents stay up-to-date, and I hope the
newsletter provided you with some beneficial information! I wanted to remind you that I post a lot of
information on my webpage and try to update it weekly with new scholarships and upcoming events. I
encourage both students and parents to periodically check it and the bulletins to ensure you hear about
all the opportunities available for life beyond high school. The direct link to my page is:
http://laplata.k12.mo.us/High_School/Couns-Fleshman/Couns-Fleshman.html .
Many seniors have started the application process for college and scholarships and I commend you on
your efficiency! Some deadlines have past, however there are still many opportunities available; take a
look at the attached list of scholarships. The local scholarships will be distributed in February at a
meeting I will hold during school with all seniors.
ACT
Your ACT score is important because, many schools base their automatic scholarships on a combination
of GPA, Class Rank, and ACT score. Improving your score by just a few points can sometimes mean a few
thousand more dollars! For more information or to register online, go to www.actstudent.org.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
Another important deadline around the corner is the FAFSA, which opened January 1st, and is currently
accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Missouri’s deadline to submit the FAFSA is April
1st, however check with your respective school for their deadline. All students wishing to receive aid
from the state (and some institutions) require you to fill out the FAFSA. If you are an A+ eligible student,
the A+ state program requires you to file the FAFSA before they send money to your school.
A resource that you may find helpful is an event called FAFSA Frenzy, held in locations all over the state.
The department of education hosts this free resource to students and their parents who need help filling
out the FAFSA. The closest location for this event is being held at MACC’s campus in Moberly located at
101 College Avenue on Sunday, February 17th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Students and their parents should
plan to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour at FAFSA Frenzy.
The first step to applying for the FAFSA can be done now – applying for a PIN number. You will need it in
order to electronically sign your FAFSA. The student and one parent need a PIN. To register for your PIN
number, visit http://www.pin.ed.gov/. The next step is filling the FAFSA out, and whether you fill it out
at home or at FAFSA Frenzy, you will need the following items:




Parents and students should bring their latest tax information and/or last pay stub from the
previous year
Social Security Number (can be found on Social Security card)
Driver's license (if any)
W-2 Forms for the previous year and other records of money earned






Your (and your spouse's, if you are married) most recent Federal Income Tax Return:
o IRS Form 1040,
o 1040A,
o 1040EZ,
o 1040Telefile,
o foreign tax return, or
o tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall
Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia.
Parent's Federal Income Tax Return for the previous year (if you are a dependent student as defined
by federal criteria)
Untaxed income records for the previous year:
o Social Security,
o Temporary Assistance to Needy Families,
o welfare, or
o veterans benefits.
Current bank statements
Current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond,
and other investment records
Documentation that you are a U.S. permanent resident or other eligible noncitizen.
Once you have completed your FAFSA, students should expect their FAFSA results (referred to as a SAR –
Student Aid Report) in 3-5 days if you applied electronically and provided an accurate email address. It
could take 2-3 weeks if you did not provide an e-mail address. I have included a step-by-step
explanation that walks you through the FAFSA process, but when in doubt please don’t hesitate to call
me or the financial aid office of your institution.
In closing, along with the enclosed list of scholarships you will find a list of colleges your student
requested I send their transcripts. As a precaution I advise you to call the admissions and/or financial
aid office to make sure they have all necessary documents so far. The countdown is on until graduation!
Sincerely,
Brook Fleshman
