GRANTY
1) Systematics Research Fund – 2014/15 call for applications - do 16. 1. 2015
The Systematics Research Fund is a joint fund of the Linnean Society of London and
the Systematics Association. It provides grants for small-scale research projects in the
field of systematics. The 2014/2015 application round is now open. The deadline for
applications is Friday 16th January 2015.
The SRF typically supports fieldwork expenditure, the purchase of scientific
equipment or expertise (e.g. buying time on analytical equipment), specimen
preparation (including the cost of temporary technical assistance), and publication
costs. However, the fund is unable to cover article processing charges. Projects of a
more general or educational nature may also be considered, provided that they include
a strong systematic component.
The fund does not provide support for attendance at scientific meetings, student
maintenance or tuition fees, nor for bench fees.
Projects already substantially funded by other bodies may be disadvantaged.
Successful projects are selected by a panel of systematists who represent a wide range
of conceptual interests and taxonomic groups. The value of any single award will not
exceed £1500.
Please note that the applicant named on the application form must be a current
member of the Linnean Society of London or the Systematics Association to be
eligible for funding.

4) AIFP vypisuje výzvu pro české výzkumníky a firmy na projekty v programu
Ebola+ - do 1. 12. 2014
Téměř osm miliard korun je alokováno na výzkumné projekty v rámci boje s
onemocněním Ebola a dalšími druhy krvácivých horeček. V rámci programu IMI
2 (Innovative Medicines Initiative) vyhlašuje Asociace inovativního farmaceutického
průmyslu (AIFP) výzvu pro české výzkumné instituce a firmy, která je otevřená
od 22.11. do 1.12.2014.
Předložené projekty se mají zaměřit na vývoj, výrobu, dopravu a uchovávání vakcín,
zajištění dodržování režimů očkování a vývoj rychlých diagnostických testů. Očekává
se, že se první projekty začnou realizovat počátkem roku 2015.

5) Mezinárodní spolupráce v H2020
O programu Horizont 2020 se nejčastěji mluví v souvislosti s rozvojem výzkumu a
inovací v rámci Evropské unie, a tedy ho můžeme někdy mylně spojovat pouze s
členskými státy regionu EU a jeho celosvětové měřítko opomíjet. Rychle se
rozvíjející globální kontext dnešního světa činí spolupráci Unie s mezinárodními
partnery nezbytnou pro rozvoj její vědecké excelence a ekonomické
konkurenceschopnosti, a především při hledání řešení společenských problémů, které
jsou ve své podstatě čím dál více globální a je nutné se pro nalezení jejich řešení
spojit a komunikovat.
Cílem tohoto článku bude představit celkový rozsah programu Horizont 2020 a
veškeré příležitosti spolupráce, které otevírá se zeměmi mimo region EU. Zároveň
načrtne i aktuální dění v této oblasti.
Spolupráce se zeměmi mimo EU se dělí na dvě kategorie: Země přidružené (tzv.
asociované) a tzv. „třetí země.“
Přidružené země
Země přidružené k programu H2020 mají stejná práva a možnosti jako členské státy
EU při účasti i koordinaci jeho projektů. Jejich účast je ošetřena článkem 7 v
předpisech H2020. Těmito zeměmi se staly k datu 10. 7. 2014 tyto státy: Albánie,
Bosna a Hercegovina, Černá hora, Island, Izrael, Makedonie, Moldávie, Norsko,
Srbsko, Turecko. (Platnost jejich účasti byla vztažena zpětně k 1. 1. 2014.) Statut
přidružené země by měly dostat do konce roku také Faerské ostrovy. Švýcarsko bylo
v předchozím rámcovém programu a v prvních měsících H2020 také přidruženou
zemí, poté byl vzhledem k novému politickému vývoji uvnitř země tento status v
únoru 2014 pozastaven, avšak od 15. září 2014 se Švýcarsko nově stalo částečně
přidruženou zemí. Tento status znamená, že výzkumní pracovníci ze Švýcarska
budou:

považováni za osoby přicházející ze země asociované k H2020 pro všechny
aktivity v rámci pilíře 1 (excelentní věda), rozšíření
účasti, Euratom a ITER. Švýcarsko bude finančně přispívat k uvedeným
částem programu na základě obvyklých výpočtů založených na HDP.

považováni za osoby mající původ ve třetích zemích vůči H2020 pro všechny
ostatní aktivity H2020 (hlavně pilíř 2 a 3).

Třetí země
Druhá kategorie „třetí země“ se otevírá za určitých podmínek spolupráci s celým
světem:
1. 1. V Horizontu 2020 byly přímo vyznačeny některé jeho části, které jsou
obzvláště vhodné pro mezinárodní spolupráci a v těchto programech jsou
evropské výzkumné subjekty vyzvány k zahrnutí partnera ze třetí

programme Výzvy, ve kterých je doporučena spolupráce se třetími zeměmi,
naleznete zde.
1. 2. Třetí země a mezinárodní organizace se mohou účastnit H2020, pokud je
financování jejich účasti poskytnuto na základě nějaké bilaterální vědecké a
technologické dohody nebo jiným ujednáním mezi Unií a třetí zemí či
mezinárodní organizací.
1. 3. EK sama rozhodne, že účast třetí země je pro dané výzvy nezbytná. Viz

Přehled vybraných příkladů současné spolupráce se třetími zeměmi a jejího
směřování:

EU – Argentina: Argentina je první zemí Latinské Ameriky, která podepsala
dohodu o spolupráci s EU v roce 2005. Kontaktní organizací je ABEST
III (The Liaison Office Argentina-European Union in Science, Technology and
Innovation – Kontaktní kancelář argentinsko-evropské unie pro vědu,
technologie a inovace), která již zastřešovala spolupráci v 6. a 7. RP.
Prioritními oblastmi spolupráce pro Argentinu jsou: biotechnologie,
potravinová výroba a zemědělství, životní prostředí, zdraví a energie.
Argentina je dále členem EMBL.
 EU - Brazílie: B.BICE+ je projekt Mezinárodní spolupráce (International
Cooperation, INCO) založený Evropskou komisí na podporu spolupráce mezi
EK, EU, asociovanými zeměmi a Brazílií. Výzvy pro Brazílii zde. B.BICE+
organizuje dvakrát do roka Inovační a technologické fórum (Technology and
Innovation Forums). Tento rok vyjde Průvodce inovacemi EU-Brazílie (EUBrazil Guide to Innovation).
 ERA-Can+ (Advancing EU-Canada Collaboration in Research and
Innovation) – je program pro nové příležitosti, zjednodušení procesů k
navázání spolupráce díky dohodě Comprehensive Economic and Trade
Agreement (CETA). EU a Kanada se navzájem považují za prioritní partnery
spolupráce. V červnu 2014 proběhla konkrétně jednání o spolupráci ve
Společných programových iniciativách (Joint Programme Initiatives) a v
oblasti nanotechnologií. Více informací naleznete zde.
 EU – Čína: V Horizontu 2020 je čínská účast možná ve VŠECH výzvách
2014/2015 a současně je několik výzev speciálně určených pro spolupráci s
Čínou: například v oblasti potravinářství, zemědělství, biotechnologií, energie,
vody, informačních a komunikačních technologií, nanotechnologií,
vesmírného a polárního výzkumu. Bližší informace zde. Nebo China-EU

o Dále JRC rozvinulo řadu vědecké spolupráce s početnými čínskými institucemi v
těchto oblastech: prevence přírodních katastrof, nukleární bezpečnost, vodní
hospodářství, potravinová bezpečnost, energetické a kosmické technologie. Více

o Informace o vědecké mobilitě a spolupráci mezi Evropou a Čínou: Researchers’
mobility and collaboration between Europe and China (EURAXESS)
o Publikace o probíhající a proběhlé spolupráci mezi EU, přidruženými státy a
Čínou zde nebo zde.
o Publikace ilustrující bohatou spolupráci EU-Čína: Testimony of Excellence
 EU - Chile: Bilaterální projekt CEST+I (Chile-European Union STI
Initiative) je projekt založený Evropskou komisí v rámci 7RP a Chilskou
komisí CONICYT. Partnerskými institucemi komise CONICYT
jsou: DLR (Německo), IDOM (Španělsko) and IRD(Francie). Současné
priority EU-chilské spolupráce jsou: polární věda a klimatické změny,
udržitelná těžba, obnovitelné energie.
 EU – Indie: Indie se umístila na pátém místě v žebříčku rozvoje nových
technologií a je považována za jednu z nejrozvinutějších zemí v oblasti
kosmického prostoru a nukleárního výzkumu. V roce 2009 vzrostly investice
Indie do VaV o 5,4%. Nejvíce investuje do těchto sektorů: matematika,
teoretická fyzika, chemie, molekulární biologie, biotechnologie,
nanotechnologie, ICT. Otevřené výzvy pro spolupráci s Indií zde. Další formy
spolupráce: EURAXES Links India – organizace zprostředkující
spolupráci. EU – India SaT Cooperation Portal - iniciativa
zprostředkovávající informace o možnostech spolupráce EU a Indie.
 EU – Japonsko: V březnu 2011 vstoupila v platnost dohoda mezi EU a
japonskou vládou o spolupráci ve vědě a technologiích. Na summitu EUJaponsko v květnu 2014 se lídři obou zemí dohodli na tom, že budou usilovat
o nové strategické partnerství ve výzkumu a inovacích. Prioritní spolupráce je
v oblastech: kritické suroviny, dopravní výzkum včetně letectví, ICT.
Oceánologie a robotika jsou další potenciální oblasti zvýšené spolupráce. V
roce 2013 byl zahájen tříletý projekt JEUPISTE, který podporuje spolupráci
EU-Japonsko.
 EU – JAR: Projekt ESASTAP Plus (2013 – 2016) posiluje vědeckou a
technologickou spolupráci mezi Jihoafrickou republikou a EU se zvláštním
ohledem na inovace pomocí účasti JAR v H2020 i zároveň účasti EU v
programech JAR.
CAAST-Net Plus (2013-2016) je síť pro koordinaci a rozvoj vědecko-technologické
spolupráce sub-saharské Afriky a EU. Prioritní témata: potravinová bezpečnost,
klimatické změny a zdraví. Síť sestává z 22 účastníků (11 z EU a 11 z Afriky).
 EU – Jižní Korea: Účast Koreji v rámcových programech EU již probíhá přes
deset let. V listopadu 2013 bylo v Bruselu zřízeno
centrum KIC.EUROPE (Korea Research & Innovation Centre in Brussels),
které rozvíjí politiky mezi Koreou a EU, platformu spolupráce ve VaV a
inovační spolupráci MSP atd. Dále centrum KIAT je NCP pro
program EUREKA a aktivním účastníkem v projektech H2020, propaguje a
financuje industriální technologii spojenou s korejskou účastí v H2020 a je
hlavním kontaktem korejské účasti v EEN (Enterprise Europe Network)
a EUROSTARS2. V současnosti v EEN probíhá akce o tom, jak najít v Koreji
partnera a přitom neopustit ČR.
 EU – Jordán: preferovaná spolupráce v oblasti vody, energie, potravinové
bezpečnosti a zdraví. Spolupráce již probíhala v minulosti v rámci 7RP, a
mnoho projektů pokračuje. Jordánsko hostí jeden z velkých projektů
infrastruktur SESAME. Mezi úspěšnými projekty EU-Jordán pod 7RP byly
KHCCBIO (první rakovinová bio banka) a Bot-ERA (první genová banka).
 EU - Mexiko: CONACYT (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología)
vyčlenil pro program H2020 k dispozici rozpočet, který je určen pro všechny
kladně ohodnocené návrhy, které dostanou finanční podporu v H2020. Aby
bylo možné tyto prostředky získat, je partner v Mexiku povinen vyplnit
formulář z webu zde. Dalším platformou je ACCESS2MEXCYT , který
poskytuje informace o mexickém výzkumu a inovačních programech a
výzvách otevřených účasti subjektů z EU, dále jakým způsobem se účastnit,
bilaterální smlouvy, informace o mexickém systému VaV.
 EU – Rusko: Rusko je nejúspěšnějším zahraničním partnerem spolupráce s
EU v rámcových programech pro výzkum a technologický vývoj EU.
Projekt BILAT-RUS-Advanced se zaměřuje na posílení bilaterální spolupráce
ve vědě, technice a inovacích (STI) a účasti Ruska v H2020. Současně
podporuje účast evropských vědců v ruských programech. INCO-NET
EECAposiluje dialog s širším regionem Východní Evropy a Střední Asie
(EECA). Zahrnuje také řadu aktivit jako podpora NCP H2020, informační
semináře, networking a zvýšení účasti výzkumníků zemí EECA v H2020.
 EU – USA: Pro tuto spolupráci existuje bilaterální projekt BILAT USA 2.0. V
březnu 2013 byly na setkání komise EU-US Joint STI určeny čtyři výzkumné
oblasti jako priority pro transatlantickou spolupráci: Podmořský a arktický
výzkum, NMP (nanotechnologie, materiály a nové produkční technologie),
Zdraví a Doprava.

6) Soutěž o Cenu METROHM 2015 již potřetí
Společnost Metrohm Česká republika s.r.o. ve spolupráci s Odbornou skupinou
analytické chemie České společnosti chemické vyhlašuje již potřetí soutěž o Cenu
METROHM 2015.
Pro koho je určena Cena METROHM?
Cena je určena pro vědecké pracovníky, jejichž výsledky práce reflektují současné
trendy vývoje ve svém oboru a jsou srovnatelné se světovou úrovní.
Nosnou myšlenkou je motivace mladých talentů a také setkání odborníků na jednom
místě s cílem vyměnit si vzájemně zkušenosti a výsledky odborné či vědecké práce.
Soutěžní kategorie:
1) Cena za nejlepší publikaci mladého elektroanalytického chemika (do 35 let).
Soutěžící můžou přímo zasílat pdf-verzi svých publikací vyšlých v průběhu roku
2014. V kategorii se udělují 3 ceny, každý z vítězů bude odměněn finanční částkou ve
výši 10 000 Kč.
2) Cena za celoživotní přínos k rozvoji elektroanalytické chemie.
Nominační návrh se stručným zdůvodněním v rozsahu cca 2 stránky můžou zasílat
jednotlivci i instituce. V kategorii se uděluje jediná cena, vítěz obdrží finanční dar
v hodnotě 20 000 Kč.

10) Veřejná soutěž ve výzkumu, experimentálním vývoji a inovacích
Ministerstva vnitra
Ministerstvo vnitra vyhlásilo dne 26. 11. 2014 veřejnou soutěž ve výzkumu,
experimentálním vývoji a inovacích v rámci Programu bezpečnostního výzkumu
České republiky v letech 2015-2020 (schváleném usnesením vlády ČR Č. 593 ze dne
9. srpna 2013 a Č. 763 ze dne 15. září 2014). Uzávěrka přijímání návrhů projektů je
16. 1. 2015, předpokládaná doba zahájení řešení projektů (poskytování podpory) je od

11) Výzva k členství v Young Academy of Europe
Young Academy of Europe (YAE) vyhlašuje nábor nových členů. Young Academy
of Europe je skupina špičkových mladých výzkumných pracovníků, kteří získali titul
Ph.D. před méně než 12 lety. Jejím cílem je mj. proaktivně ovlivňovat evropskou
vědní politiku. Mezi členy akademie jsou vedoucí osobnosti výzkumu a řešitelé
prestižních ERC grantů.
Filozofie YAE je založena na přístupu "zdola nahoru", a proto je důležité osazení
YAE pravidelně obnovovat a rozšiřovat.
Původních 100 členů bylo osloveno ze skupiny držitelů ERC grantů. Od 1. ledna 2014
se YAE otevřela i předním mladým učencům, jejichž vědecká excelence na
mezinárodní úrovni byla uznána i jiným způsobem. (Například držitele prestižních
evropských nebo národních vědeckých grantů nebo ocenění.) YAE přijme kolem 100
nových členů za rok, s cílem dosáhnout počtu 500 členů za pět let.
Nominace lze zasílat každé 3 měsíce s uzávěrkami 31.3., 30.6., 30.9. a 31.12.

12) The Wenner-Gren Foundation - Conference and Workshop Grants - vždy 1.

Conference and Workshop Grants
Conference and Workshop Grants are for amounts up to $20,000. In accordance
with the mission of the Foundation, priority is given to events that foster the creation
of an international community of research scholars in anthropology and advance
significant and innovative anthropological research.
Conferences are defined as public events that are comprised primarily of oral and
poster presentations to a larger audience of anthropologists. Priority is given to major
conferences sponsored by large international anthropological organizations (e.g., the
European Association of Social Anthropologists, European Anthropological
Association, Pan African Anthropological Association, and Latin American
Anthropological Association) that serve as their annual or periodic meetings. The
majority of the funds granted to such conferences is expected to be used towards
expenses for international scholars who are making presentations at the conference
and would not otherwise be able to attend.
Workshops are defined as working meetings that focus on developing and debating
topical issues in theoretical anthropology. Workshops involve a small group of
scholars who meet for a sufficient period of time to deal intensively with the topic.
Priority is given to those workshops that devote the majority of time to discussion and
debate rather than to the presentation of papers. It is expected that workshops will
result in a publication.
Application deadlines for Conference and Workshop Grants are June 1 and
December 1. The June 1 deadline is for conferences and workshops to be held no
earlier than January of the following year. The December 1 deadline is for
conferences and workshops to be held no earlier than July of the following
year.Decisions will be announced within 4-6 months of the deadline.
Applicants must submit application materials using the Foundation's online
application submission procedure as well as send printed copies of these materials to
the Foundation by regular mail.

14) Příprava pracovního programu FET 2016-2017
Evropská komise zveřejnila informace a časový harmonogram přípravy pracovního
programu na období 2016-2017 pro oblast budoucích a vznikajících technologií
(FET). Předběžná témata byla vybrána na základě veřejné konzultace, která probíhala
v létě t.r. a na doporučení nezávislého poradního orgánu (FET Advisory Board).
Detailní příprava pracovního programu začne v lednu 2015, první výzvy pro rok 2016
budou vyhlášeny v třetím čtvrtletí roku 2015. Více informací, včetně odkazu na

15) 4. ročník soutěže Česká inovace přijímá nové kandidáty - připomínka
uzávěrky
Česká inovace otevírá čtvrtý ročník největší soutěže nových nápadů v Česku. Cílem
soutěže je rozpoznat perspektivní inovace, ocenit jejich autory a podpořit další
uplatnění v praxi, a v obecné rovině dát inovátorům a inovativně smýšlejícím lidem
prostor pro zviditelnění a propagaci jejich inovativních nápadů jak v ČR, tak na
mezinárodní scéně. Soutěž je příležitostí pro ty, kteří hledají možnost, jak prosadit
svůj nápad na trhu, hledají pomocnou ruku a podporu.
Nad soutěží převzala záštitu Technologická agentura České republiky (TA ČR).
Zúčastnit se mohou inovátoři bez ohledu na věk, odvětví, ve kterém pracují, nebo
zkušenosti.
Uzávěrka soutěže je 5. prosince 2014, vítězové pak budou vyhlášeni koncem března
2015 na Festivalu České inovace v Národní technické knihovně v Praze. Projekt
můžete přihlásit pomocí online formuláře.
Oceněné Inovace budou mediálně zviditelněny, získají konzultační podporu pro další
rozvoj, přístup k finančním zdrojům a kontakty. Vítězný projekt získává cestu do
Ameriky - inovačního centra společnosti 3M Česko a další věcná plnění ušité na
míru potřebám inovačního projektu.
Novinkou je udělení ceny za kreativitu. Ta ocení novátorské řešení v praktickém
životě, které může být teprve myšlenkou na počátku svého vývoje.
Kategorie Inovační nápad ohodnotí inovace od jednotlivců nebo studentů, začínající
firmy soutěží v kategorii Nadějná inovace, Inovační hvězda ocení malé a střední
firmy, kategorie Inovativní firma je určená společnostem nad 250 zaměstnanců a
pátá kategorie se zaměří na Inovace ve veřejné správě. Již druhým rokem bude
Česká inovace vyhlašovat speciální cenu za Společenskou prospěšnost inovace.

16) Schváleno 40 nových akcí COST
Výbor vyšších úředníků COST schválil na svém 192. zasedání v listopadu 2014 40
nových COST akcí pro rok 2015, které se jako poslední řídily systémem domén. Další
výběrové kolo by mělo být uzavřeno v listopadu příštího roku a bude probíhat podle
nových procedur podávání návrhů, jejich hodnocení, výběru a schvalování, které by
měly být jednodušší, transparentnější, rychlejší a otevřené pro všechna vědeckotechnologická odvětví. Nová pravidla jsou popsána zde. Seznam vybraných akcí je

17) Workshop k možnostem účasti vědců EU v čínských programech pro
výzkum a inovace
Kancelář CZELO ve spolupráci s partnery projektu Dragon STAR uspořádala dne 21.
listopadu 2014 v Bruselu seminář nazvaný „Supporting EU Access to Chinese
Research and Innovation Programmes“. O téma projevilo zájem přes 50 účastníků. V
úvodu vedoucí kanceláře CZELO Anna Vosečková informovala jak aktivitách a
službách CZELO a TC AV ČR, tak i o aktivitách neformálního sdružení styčných
kanceláří IGLO a jeho pracovních skupin, z nichž se jedna zaměřuje na mezinárodní
spolupráci. Projekt Dragon STAR (7. RP, 2012 – 2015), jeho cestovní grant do Číny,
čínské výzkumné programy, statistiky účasti Číny v rámcových programech a
připravované analýzy a studie představila Sara Medina, portugalská společnosti SPI,
Michele Genovese, člen Poradní rady projektu, a Andrea Degen, švýcarská společnost
EUrelations. V přípravě jsou stručné pokyny, jak se mohou Evropané zapojit do
čínských programů, uvedeny budou i zkušenosti těch, kteří se již zapojili. Další

18) Newsletter Meziparlamentní skupiny pro změnu klimatu, biodiverzitu a
udržitelný rozvoj
Meziparlamentní skupina pro oblast změny klimatu, biodiverzity a udržitelného
rozvoje, které předsedá český poslanec EP Pavel Poc, vydala listopadové číslo svého
Newsletteru. Kromě jiných naleznete v tomto vydání i seznam většiny relevantních

19) Iniciativa ERANETMED: Výzva v oblasti obnovitelných energií, vodních
zdrojů a jejich propojení pro Středomořský region - do 2. 2. 2015
Iniciativa ERANETMED, která se zaměřuje na koordinaci aktivit různých národních
výzkumných programů členských států EU, přidružených zemí evropských
rámcových programů a partnerských států ze Středomoří, otevřela výzvu k
předkládání výzkumných návrhů v oblasti obnovitelných energií a vodních zdrojů.
Výzva obsahuje tři témata: Obnovitelné energie a energetická účinnost, Hospodaření s
vodními zdroji a Spojitost mezi energií a vodou (Energy – Water nexus). Celkový
rozpočet pro tuto výzvu činí 13 420 000 EUR. Uzávěrka pro zasílání výzkumných

20) The Company of Biologists - Scientific Meeting Grants
The Company considers funding requests from the organisers of a range of charitable
activities deemed to lie within its remit. These include, but are not limited to,
meetings, workshops and conferences in the fields covered by our journals, support of
young scientists and funding for plenary or keynote speakers attending meetings.
Criteria Required for Funding
 Proposal is in an area of research which relates to a Company journal
 Funds to organisers of conferences/workshops
 Proposal is supportive of young scientists attending a conference/workshop
 Proposal in support of visiting plenary speaker at a conference/workshop, etc.
Restrictions on Applications
The Company is unable to sponsor any of the following:
 Expenditure on capital equipment and capital building proposals
 Removal expenses
 Undergraduate expeditions and courses
 Prizes, e.g. posters
 Social/political networking
 Conference dinners/social events/refreshment breaks
 Tuition fees
 Payments for the employment of staff




Guidelines to completing the application form.
 The applicant who completes the form must be in the organising group for the
meeting. Applications from professional fund-raisers will not be considered.
 Incomplete application forms will not be considered.
 Please ensure that you attach information on the topics/outline programme,
speakers/proposed speakers and the outline budget for the whole meeting.
Please keep this information to a maximum of six pages in total.
 Although there are no rigid rules, the Company would normally expect grants
to be broadly proportional to the size of the meeting. Typically, they are
awarded in a sliding scale where meetings with fewer than 100 people are
given up to £2,000; over about 400 people up to £6,000. Exceptionally, these
limits are exceeded, but in most cases special justification is expected.
 Please note that whilst the quality of science remains paramount, the Company
would prefer to support meetings and events where organisers have sought
maximal feasible diversity in speakers in terms of geography, gender and age.
In addition, where attendance at events is selective, then we would expect
such issues to also be influential. The Company invites applicants to make a
statement on these issues in their application for funding.
 Funding requests must be in GBP Sterling.
 Application forms and supporting information must be written in English.
Acknowledgement of Funding
As part of our agreement to provide funding, we request that should your application
be successful you acknowledge The Company of Biologists' contribution to the
meeting on your website and in any printed material circulated about the event, such
as the abstracts book. We would ask that this acknowledgement include the company
name, logo and web address. Upon grant approval we will issue a Grant Agreement
which will need to be signed and returned along with your bank details. We also
require a 250 – 500 word summary of the meeting including an assessment of the
impact and outcome of the meeting within 3 months of the meeting date.

A decision is made once the Grants Committee have met and put together their

Small Meeting Grants
The Company of Biologists will consider applications for a grant towards the cost of
running a small meeting within the fields of the company's journals. Such a meeting
would normally be a local one on a small budget. Applications for support for aspects
of large meetings will not be considered for a small meeting grant; such applications
should be directed to the company's Grants Committee.
Application should be made to the Charity Administrator and should include the title
and location of the meeting, full details of costs, other sources of finance already
obtained or applied for, and any other relevant details.
The following criteria apply
 Level of funding normally not exceeding £300.
 Only one application per year.
 Funding will not be made retrospectively.

Fighting climate change and disasters with natural solutions A global warming of 4°C
could happen as early as the 2060s, whereas natural disasters and extreme weather
will be in the rise increasing death tolls and economic losses. We have to get
prepared, adapt and mitigate these impacts. Our best weapon against climate change
and its impacts is nature. 15% of the world’s terrestrial carbon stock – 312 gigatonnes
– are stored in protected areas around the world. Nature also serves as buffers against
disasters, providing space for floodwaters to disperse, stabilizing soil against
landslides and blocking storm surges. It has been estimated that coastal wetlands in
the United States provide $23.2 billion a year in protection against flooding from
hurricanes. But we can think in a smaller scale – only planting one tree can serve the
cooling effect of 10 air-conditioners, using traditional local breeds in agriculture can
result in more resilient yields, only planning a few hectares of green space in the city
can reduce flood and heat islands – along with it health – risks. Show how climate

RSPB's Northern England region is recruiting for seasonal contract staff to monitor
the breeding attempts of Hen harriers at it's Geltsdale reserve in the North Pennines.
As a Species Protection Assistant this role will involve the monitoring of hen harrier
activity from early in the season to identify territories and breeding behaviour before
managing the monitoring of any nesting attempts. This will involve working with
diverse groups of people including project partners, volunteers and other raptor
enthusiasts.
The successful applicants will have a sound knowledge of upland bird ecology,
experience of bird surveying and working in the uplands.
The RSPB's hen harrier nest protection work is part of the Skydancer Project, funded
by the Heritage Lottery Fund and United Utilities, and supported by the Forestry

ml on a research project entitled “Global Legume diversity patterns:
macroevolutionary and ecological processes shaping biodiversity”, funded by the
Swiss National Science Foundation in the Institute of Systematic Botany at the

We are interested in how diversity evolves and understanding the processes and
factors that determine the spatial distribution of life on Earth. Using comparative
approaches and one of the most evolutionary successful families of flowering plants,
the legumes (Leguminosae = Fabaceae), as a study system, we are addressing a set of
inter-related questions about global plant diversity patterns. We are making use of
recent developments in comparative phylogenomics and global-scale species
distribution modelling to quantify phylogenetic turnover and the ecological factors
underlying patterns of diversity across large-scale ecological gradients.
The PhD project will focus on the legume subfamily Mimosoideae, a pantropical
clade spanning all lowland tropical biomes and will involve fieldwork, laboratory
work to generate DNA sequence data using NGS, herbarium specimen database work,
and phylogenetic and macroevolutionary analysis. This will build on foundations
already established in Zurich in terms of genomic data, development of suitable NGS
approaches, taxonomic knowledge and research material for the mimosoid legumes.
Position characteristics: The Institute of Systematic Botany in Zurich offers excellent
research facilities and a stimulating working environment for graduate students in
plant systematics and evolution. The project will also involve collaboration with
legume researchers in Brasil, the Netherlands, U.K., U.S.A. and Canada. Salary is
according to the Swiss National Science Foundation guidelines. Funding, including
for laboratory and field costs, is available for 3 years.
Requirements: Applicants should hold a Masters degree in systematics, biodiversity
or evolutionary biology. Experience in molecular laboratory techniques, working with
NGS data, phylogenetic analysis, macroevolutionary analysis, fieldwork and GIS are
all potentially relevant. Excellent knowledge of English, written and oral, is essential.

4) Master of Wildlife Health and Conservation
• One year full time (the program can be undertaken in part-time mode)
The Master of Wildlife Health and Conservation can be undertaken by distance
education or at the Murdoch University Campus. This program is available to
biologists, ecologists and environmental scientists resident in Australia or overseas. It
will also be relevant for zoo-keepers and veterinary nurses who have an interest in
wildlife conservation and rehabilitation, with a graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or
higher qualification. The program is offered on a full-fee paying basis only.
The Master of Wildlife Health and Conservation will offer training in techniques and
research methods necessary to achieve answers to the complex questions in
contemporary biodiversity conservation as they relate to wildlife health and disease.
Special focus will be given to understanding the need and opportunities for
transdisciplinary partnerships locally, nationally and globally, and the One Health
approach (the intersection of human, animal and environmental health).
The course aims to provide graduates with applied skills for wildlife health and

5) The Company of Biologists - Travelling Fellowships - do 31. 12. 2014
The Company of Biologists' journals – Development, Journal of Cell Science, The
Journal of Experimental Biology, and Disease Models & Mechanisms(DMM) –
offer fellowships of up to £2,500 or currency equivalent to graduate students and
post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories.
These are designed to offset the cost of travel and other expenses. There is no
restriction on nationality.
Applicants should be working in the field of the journal to which they apply and
intend to visit another laboratory. Each application will be judged on the excellence of
the candidate, and the importance and innovative quality of the work to be done.

6) Sydney Achievers International Scholarships at University of Sydney in
Australia, 2015 - do 6. 2. 2015
Applications are invited for Sydney Achievers International Scholarships available for
new international students for pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate degree
program commencing from 2015. These prestigious scholarships will be offered to
high achieving, academically meritorious, international students. Scholarships are
awarded for the duration of a recipient’s program of study. Scholarship recipients will
need to maintain satisfactory academic progress, which, for the purposes of retaining
the Scholarship, is defined as maintaining a credit average (at least 65%) or more each
year. To be considered, students must have an unconditional offer by 15 January
2015.

What does it cover?
-For undergraduate: AUD$10,000 each per annum, available for the CRICOS
registered duration of a recipient’s program of study, for any Undergraduate program
offered at the University of Sydney (subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory
academic progress each year). No living allowance is payable.
-For postgraduate: AUD$10,000 each per annum (i.e, $15,000 in total for a 1.5 year
program, $20,000 in total for a 2 year program), available for the CRICOS registered
duration of a recipient’s program of study, for any Postgraduate Coursework program
offered at the University of Sydney (subject to the recipient maintaining satisfactory
academic progress each year). No living allowance is payable.
Selection Criteria:
-Selection will be based strictly on academic merit as per the University’s admission
requirements.
-Selection will be based on actual results (academic and English language
proficiency). Predicted/forecast results will not be considered.
-Only applicants with unconditional offers of admission will be considered.
-Selection will be made by the Student Recruitment & Admissions Group, whose
decision will be final. No appeals will be entertained.
Conditions:
-Scholarship recipients will need to maintain satisfactory academic progress, which,
for the purposes of retaining the Scholarship, is defined as maintaining a credit
average (at least 65%) or more each year. Failure to do so may result in the
Scholarship being terminated.
-Successful candidates: – must not be in receipt of any other tuition scholarship or
sponsorship; must commence study in Semester One 2015 – commencement may not
be deferred to a later semester, will be required to pay for their own airfares to
Sydney, living expenses, study materials, text books, any ancillary fees (if applicable)
and Overseas Student Health Cover each year; are also responsible for paying the
balance of the tuition fees each year; are required to enrol as full-time international
students and must maintain their international student status on a full-time basis
throughout their enrolment at the University of Sydney; and may not be entitled to a
‘Leave of Absence’ during the duration of the Scholarship, unless it is due to
extenuating circumstances.
Notification: Offers for the scholarship will be made after 06 February 2015.
How to Apply: No separate application is required for the scholarship. Applications
for Admission to Semester One 2015 are now open. To apply, visit find a
course website. To be considered for the Sydney Achievers International Scholarship,
a candidate must receive an Unconditional Offer of Admission. All eligible applicants
with an unconditional offer by a specified cut-off date will be considered. From that
pool, top-ranked eligible applicants will be selected and invited to complete an
Expression of Interest form. All those returning a completed EOI form by the due date
will be further considered, from which successful candidates will be selected and then
offered the scholarship by email.
Scholarship Application Deadline: To be considered, you must have an
Unconditional Offer by 15 January 2015. Invitations to EOI will be sent to selected
applicants by 23 January 2015. Those returning their EOIs by 30 January 2015 will be
further considered.

7) Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for International
Students, 2015 - do února 2015
Each year Government of Ireland awards postgraduate scholarship for scholars from
any country. Scholarship is awarded for qualified Research Master’s and Doctoral
candidates pursuing or intending to pursue full-time research in any discipline, based
in an Irish HEI. The duration of funding depends on the type of degree being pursued
and the date of first registration.

Course Level: Scholarship is available to masters and doctoral students for
pursuing full time research at an eligible HEI within Ireland.
Scholarship Provider: Government of Ireland and the higher education institutions
(HEIs)
Scholarship can be taken at: Ireland
Eligibility: Scholars must fulfill the following criteria:
-Scholars must be full-time students affiliated with an eligible HEI in Ireland.
-must not be a permanent member of staff in an HEI or in a non-Irish based research
body or HEI.
-must have a first class or upper second-class honours primary degree, or the
equivalent4. If examination results are not known at the time of application, the
Council may make a provisional offer of a Scholarship on condition that the Scholar’s
undergraduate degree result is a first class- or upper second-class honours, or the
equivalent. Masters degree results may be considered to take precedence over the
results of the primary degree. The Council decision on these matters is final;
-must not have applied more than once to the Scheme (including strategic partner
themes within the Scheme). This includes applications since 2009 to the EMBARK
scheme previously run by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and
Technology (IRCSET), and the Government of Ireland Scholarship Scheme
previously run by the Irish Council for Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS).
(a)and at the time of application:
-be a new entrant to the degree for which they are to receive Council funding and
have been formally accepted by the relevant department/school by, at the latest, 1st
October 2015;
-fulfill the criteria in 4.4 if already registered and part of the degree has been
completed.
-In the case of Research Masters Scholarships, not currently holding or having
previously held a Council Postgraduate Scholarship;
-Doctoral Degree Scholarships, not currently holding or having previously held any
Council Postgraduate Scholarship other than those which would enable them to obtain
a Research Masters Degree.
-Scholars from any country may hold a Council Postgraduate Scholarship. However,
Scholars must:
-maintain her/his principal residence in Ireland (as defined) during the period of the
Scholarship;
-satisfy the State’s regulations on immigration and have the support of their HEI with
respect to these regulations and requirements if not a national of a member state of the
European Union (EU).

this scholarship.
Scholarship Description: The Irish Research Council has opened the 2015 call for
the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme (including associated
strategic partner scholarships) and the Enterprise Partnership Scholarship Scheme.
The Council funds excellent researchers across all disciplines and encourages
interdisciplinary research and engagement with enterprise. The Council facilitates the
career development of researchers by funding those at an early stage of their research
career to associate with established research teams who have achieved international
recognition for their work. The Council aims to support an expertise-driven research
system in order to enhance Ireland’s innovation capacity and skills base in a rapidly
changing global environment where knowledge is key to economic, social and
cultural development. The Council is further committed to facilitating the integration
of Irish researchers in all disciplines within the European Research Area.

What does it cover? The total value of the Government of Ireland Postgraduate
Scholarship, Enterprise Partnership Scheme Postgraduate Scholarship and all strategic
funding partner scholarships, will be up to a maximum of €24,000 in any approved
year and will consist of the following:
-A maintenance award of €16,000 per annum within the Funding Term;
-Contribution to fees, including non-EU scholarship fees, paid to the HEI up to a
maximum of €5,750. Any differential must be paid by the Scholar and/or HEI per
annum. Scholars who hold a fee waiver from their HEI, or where no fee is required, or
where fees are paid in full or in part by a third party, must inform the Council and the
appropriate offices in their HEI and will not be eligible for the fee portion of the

-The maximum that can be spent in any year of the Scholarship is €24,000, plus any

How to Apply: Applications will only be accepted through the electronic submission
system, which will be launched in due course. A “Guidelines for Applicants”
document will be posted on the official website. In advance of the e-system and as an
aid to preparing an application, an indicative word document version of the

(where relevant) Enterprise Mentor forms will be available in due course. All

8) International Association of Sedimentologists - Postgraduate Grant Scheme
(PGS) - do 31. 3. 2015
Up to 10 grants of about 1000€ twice a year
The IAS has established a grant scheme designed to help PhD students with their
studies by offering to support postgraduates in their fieldwork, data acquisition and
analysis, visits to other institutes to use specialised facilities, or participation in field
excursions directly related to the PhD research subject. Up to 10 grants, each of
about1000€ are awarded twice a year. These grants are available for IAS members
only, and only for PhD students. Students enrolled in MSc programs are NOT eligible
for grants. Research grants are NOT given for travel to attend a scientific conference,
NOR for acquisition of equipment. Student travel grants for conferences can be
usually obtained directly from organizers of the meeting.
The Postgraduate Grant Scheme Guidelines provide a summary of required
information needed for a successful Grant Application. Applications are evaluated on
the basis of the scientific merits of the problems, the capability of the researcher, and
reasonableness of the budget.
