Academic Scholarships
Each year The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation awards two $1,000 academic scholarships to
encourage the study of historic preservation and related fields. Recipients are chosen on the basis of
leadership and academic achievement. The Georgia Trust established its scholarship program to ensure that
knowledgeable leaders continue to enter the field of historic preservation.
These scholarships are presented to encourage the pursuit of degrees that will lead to working in the
preservation field and thereby assist the Georgia Trust in its goals to conserve Georgia’s built environment,
inform the public about the benefits of historic preservation and assist individuals and their communities in
their restoration and preservation projects.

ubert Owens Scholarship:This $1,000 scholarship is given in honor of the founding dean of the
University of Georgia Landscape Architecture Program– now the College of
Environmental Design– which houses the Historic Preservation Program.

Phinizy Spalding Scholarship:This $1,000 scholarship is named after the late charter member of The
Georgia Trust and one of the state’s pre-eminent historians, educators
and preservationists.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and residents of Georgia. Students currently enrolled in their first year of
school in Georgia may apply. Applicants also must plan to enroll full time during the current or upcoming
semesters at a Georgia school. Students applying for the scholarships are encouraged to plan to stay and work
in Georgia following graduation. Students majoring in historic preservation or related fields (such as
archaeology, architecture, history and planning) are eligible. Stipends are given for current or following
academic year.

 1 personal and 2 academic letters of recommendation
 Personal statement addressing why you are applying for a scholarship. Include a statement concerning
previous or planned future involvement in historic preservation.
