1 elcome, introductions

2.Approval of COMPASS minutes for September 26, 2012 meeting.

3.COMPASS and Technology Related Issues.
a. Questions or issues with Horizon functions.
None
b. Horizon news: updates & upgrades, etc.
Mark will reschedule upgrade after patch has been tested. The upgrade should fix Java
7 problem, but don’t update until Mark has tested. Will be able to use Bookmine after
upgrade.
c. Current balance of ALS materials budget for OverDrive: (somewhere
between -10k and --20k) $0
( ALS board has approved additional purchases. Jim or Shari can approve additional
purchases as needed). Selectors can continue to add things to carts. Upper limit is 10
copies on automatic purchases.
d. OverDrive Download Stations: still worth the fees?
VPL =no one uses it. Gilbert=no one use it, Grand Marais, not much, Cloquet, not
much, Duluth, not much. Consensus is not to renew. Shari will move annual fee to
collections budget. Effective January 1, 2013.
e. Transition to Google Mail: update.
Nothing to report. Still waiting for DNS issue to resolve.
f. Unique Management: status report.
VPL, Cloquet, GR, IFalls will continue. Silver Bay will return to manual method.
g. NESC “Middle Mile” fiber optic project: updates.
No one will be activated this year. Some places will have installation this year, but not
connection ie. Virginia, Mt. Iron. Majority will be spring connected in 2013. Itasca Co
libraries upgraded to 10mb with Mediacom. (no guarantee of continued 10mg since
agreement is for T1 equivalent)

Mark: need to have Director’ s contact information in case emergency work
needed.(also IT contact if applicable) Mark will do email to ascold with
request for information.
Shari: Database Trials. Brainfuse needs to be a demonstration. Newsbank
(Geneology and history newspapers: trials will be set up. Obituaries is set
up)

Library Issues.
a. Legal info
Jim will contact with suggestion for scheduling for next year. Possible 1 training on
Range, another in Duluth. http://www.lawhelpmn.org/platj
b. What’s happening at your library?
Duluth Polaris is planning mtg/demonstration in Duluth Nov. 1 with preview of new
Polaris release. 2 sessions are scheduled. Need responses by Oct 29
IFalls hosting exhibit: Here/there and Everywhere on laws of physics
New Americans exhibit in Aurora in partnership with Community Ed.
VPL Susan Krause/cataloger, is retiring. Having hard time filling clerk position.
c. Legacy programs: update.
Reminder, legacy page on blog has listings for all events. Nancy will attend mtg
in Duluth.
d. ALS Strategic Planning process: update.
Each goal (identified in planning session #3) has a goal team and there is an oversight
team. 18-22 hours of mtgs to be held yet this year. Plan will be adopted at ALS board mtg
in Feb. Meeting notes have been distributed.
e. Staff reports
Jim: re: Weathering the Storm infographic has been distributed by Brian to each
Library.
ALA has toolkit for Library services to homeless

Jim and Carla P are office holders in MLA (Jim will chair leg committee in 2014)
