Leadership Counselor Application
Thank you for applying to be a Make Your Mark on Madison Leadership Counselor. We will
be selecting 20 outstanding rising juniors and seniors who want to impact the lives of future
student leaders in our community. Every Leadership Counselor will make the commitment
to participate in weekly MYMOM sessions beginning with spring training. This commitment
will continue through the fall with direct facilitation of a council consisting of freshman or
sophomore students. Please read the information below carefully and thoroughly, as
exceptions for missing training and weekly meetings on a regular basis cannot be made. If
you are an ASB trip leader, the Assistant Director Misty Newman, must sign and give the
dates that you will have to miss MYMOM training in the spring 2015. Please contact Adam

Expectations of a Leadership Counselor
 Be an enthusiastic and involved member of the JMU community
 Be willing to purposefully invest in the lives of first and second year students
 Commit to attending training sessions one night a week in the Spring and Fall
 Be able to facilitate discussions, and icebreakers in a group setting
 Be able to commit a significant amount of time outside of weekly meetings to plan for
time spent with councils.
 Be willing to learn and grow in your leadership capacity
 Be open and honest about your JMU experiences and how they have shaped you as
a leader
 Be passionate about your role as a student leader
Spring 2015 Responsibilities:
 Participate in an overnight counselor retreat Friday February 13th 3:30pm through
Saturday February 14th 12:00pm (contact Adam and Lauren with scheduling
concerns)
 Attend training sessions on Monday nights (7-9:15pm)
 Schedule and attend one on one meetings with Adam and Lauren
 Schedule one meeting with Kristin Muncy
Fall 2015 Responsibilities:
 Help advertise the program and recruit participants for the semester
 Attend weekly training and planning sessions (for which you will receive class credit)
beginning the first week of classes
 Read and evaluate participant applications
 Conduct participant interviews
 Attend a participant and counselor retreat in September
 Attend all Monday night sessions with your council (7-9:15pm)
 Facilitate reflections and discussions with your council
 Meet with your partner outside of weekly meetings to plan for Monday nights
 Schedule and attend one on one meetings with Adam and Lauren
 Be involved in the lives of the students in your council
 Conduct one on one meetings with your council members between you and your
partner

Be enrolled in HRD475: Seminar in Leadership which provides insight to Monday
night sessions and planning
Spring 2016 Responsibilities:
 Remain active in the lives of your participants
 Schedule and attend 3 events with your councils
 Help in the interview and selection process for the 2016 LCs

Availability and Commitments
2. Group interviews will be held Sunday February 1st and Monday
February 2nd. Please bring a schedule when you drop off this
application in order to sign up for a group interview.
3. Attach a list of commitments and past/present involvements (clubs,
organizations, positions held, etc.) for the Spring and Fall of 2015 to
the back of your application.
4. Complete the availability grids below, it will be used if you are selected
for a one-on-one interview. Please put an X in the spaces that you are
not available. Please fill out the ENTIRE grid.
Applications are due Friday, January 30th by 5:00 PM at Student
Activities and Involvement located on the third floor of Warren.
