SYLLABUS FOR PT 524 HOMILETIS PREACHING LAB ll

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will offer the opportunity to gain experience in preaching and hone homiletical
skills. The student will preach two expository sermons based on an OT and a NT narrative. He will also
deliver an evangelistic message based on the Christmas story and a wedding devotional/homily.
GOALS OF THE COURSE:
1. To provide continued opportunity in expository preaching (using two biblical narratives).
2. To continue refining good pulpit mannerisms and delivery.
3. To become a careful, accurate, expressive public reader of Scripture.
4. To cultivate the use of the original languages in sermon background study.
5. To make the Scripture relevant and applicable to the twenty-first century hearer.
6. To practice presenting an evangelistic message during the Christmas season.
7. To personally address the bride and groom on the occasion of their wedding with a biblical
message crafted especially for them.
REQUIRED READING:
A. Read two books.
1) Davis, Dale Ralph, The Word Became Fresh, Christian Focus Publications, 2006
2) Choose one of the following:
a. Clowney, Edmund, Preaching Christ in All of Scripture, Crossway, 2003
b. Johnson, Dennis, Him We Proclaim: Preaching Christ From All the Scripture,
Puritan Reformed, 2007
B. Write a page report describing several important lessons you gleaned which will
aid you in preaching expositorilly.
THE FOLLOWING CONTRIBUTES TO THE STUDENT’S GRADE :
A. Class attendance and sermon critiques of fellow students.
B. Preaching
1) Expository Sermon from narrative portion of the Old Testament. Prepare and
deliver a 25 minute sermon on an assigned text. At the time of preaching kindly
submit to the professor:
i. An outline with main and sub-points
ii. The proposition
iii. A brief summary of the insights you gleaned from the study of key words or
particular verses in the Hebrew Scripture.
2) Expository sermon from a narrative portion of the New Testament. Prepare and
deliver a 25 minute sermon on an assigned text from the Gospels. At the time of
preaching kindly submit to the professor:
i. An outline with main and sub-points
ii. The proposition
iii. A brief summary of the insights you gleaned from the study of key words or
particular verses in the Greek Scripture.
3) A Wedding Homily. You are facing the couple and speaking directly to them. Make
the 10 minute message biblical and personal.
4) An Evangelistic Homily. You are preaching to many unchurched (presumably
unsaved) individuals who are visiting your church at Christmas time. You desire to
present Christ and His salvation in a way which will grab their attention, while
introducing them to the need for salvation, the provision God has made for their
salvation and what they need to do to receive it. Choose your own text from a
portion of the Christmas narratives and limit the message to 15 minutes.
C. Evaluation of Sermons.
1) Each student will be evaluated by the professor and his fellow students (see the
evaluation sheet).
2) The student will view the video of the OT sermon and write a brief report of what he
learned from watching the video. The focus should be on delivery (gestures, voice
quality: volume, tone, pitch) and pulpit manner.
3) Each student will be graded on the accurate, expressive, careful reading of the text
for the two sermons.
