Blocks of Change Cody Small This art piece represents a connection between Neolithic river valley civilizations and Newton’s 3 laws of motion. “That connection is according to Newton’s 1st law, an object (Neolithic society) at rest stays at rest until an outside force (Conflict) acts upon it.” Meaning that human society only advances when there is a conflict to force us to. For the people who saw this before it was finished there was one thing that almost all of them didn’t understand. Which block is a cause and which one is an effect? It can go both ways. I knew when we started that I wanted to do something different, something that other people wouldn’t even think to try. Most people had paintings or drawings, and some people used clay to sculpt. I even made it out of a medium that nobody else used, wood. This is also why I made something that was more of a game than normal art. For the more game like aspect all of the sides on one cube can have a cause and effect connection to the side on the other cube. If we were to play the game all players would take turns rolling the cubes each time everyone must think of a way to connect the two cubes. The person with the best connection gets one point. The game ends when somebody rolls a combination that has already been connected. Everything on this art piece was chosen for a reason. The colors I chose were supposed to represent the feel for that side of the cube on the “bad people” side the background is grey to give a feeling of fear. On the “religion” side the background is light blue showing that people were happy with this. The form of two cubes was so that I could make the project more interactive, making this artwork more of a game rather than just art.
