265113S01 INTERIOR LIGHTING (Ameresco)
[Ameresco] See 006290S01 to 006290S04 for ESCO Buildings List / Compliance
Requirements.
1. INDOOR LIGHTING
*Note: This standard is a design guideline for all new buildings and renovations. On LEED certified
new building designs and on renovations designed to meet LEED-EB requirements, design
exceptions may be taken to this standard if those are required for LEED designs and as long as the
owner is aware (in writing) of the exceptions taken to meet LEED design requirements. For new
installations or total fixture replacements, LED lighting should be considered as the first design option
if LED equipment can satisfy the lighting requirements for the space. The lighting quality and
payback need to be considerations in the design decision.
1.1. All general area lighting shall be LED fixtures or 2'x4' fixtures with T-8 (1" diameter) or T-5 (5/8”
diameter) fluorescent lamps and energy efficient electronic ballast. Lamp Kelvin temperature
shall be 4100 degrees and Color Rendering Index shall be 85 or higher. T12 and F32T8 lamps
shall not be used. University has standardized on F28T8 lamps for these types of fixtures.
1.2.
1.3.
1.4.
All new and replacement lighted "EXIT" signs shall be UL-924 approved, LED type, 2 watts or
less, with red letters.
Computer Labs, Libraries and similar areas to have indirect lighting to minimize glare and
subsequently eye fatigue. If economics dictates, deep cell parabolic louvers may be used in
lieu of indirect lighting.
Can lights shall be LED fixtures or compact fluorescent by exception to item 1.1 above. Heat
buildup shall be taken into consideration when using LED lamps in can lights.
2. LIGHTING BY AREA TYPE
Light levels to be as follows and consistent with IES recommendations:

NOTES
1 Foot-candle levels calculations must have, associated with them, a spherical coordinate system or
polar coordinate system.
2 Provide two (2) levels of illumination when possible. Provide dimmers when required.
3 Motion detectors
4 Motion detectors when safety permits.
5 Foot-candle illumination levels in office areas shall be measured at workstation surface with
occupant in place. Task lighting may be used to provide illumination levels at work surface height
supplementing overhead lighting system.

4. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LIGHTING
4.1. T12 and F32T8 lamps shall not be used. University has standardized on F28T8 lamps for
these types of fixtures
4.2. All new construction and major renovation lighting shall meet the ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA
Standard 90.1-2007 requirements for efficiency. Refer to the most recent edition of the IES
Handbook for recommended light levels for all interior locations and tasks. If design is specified
as a LEED design, lighting design shall contribute to LEED certification as required.
4.3. All ballasts to be low noise type, sound rated "Class A" UL Listed with "Class P Thermal
Protector”.
4.4. Unless specified otherwise, lighting to be industrial quality.
4.5. All lighting to be installed in accordance with UK Standards 16000-16999.
4.6. All lighting on emergency generator circuits shall be non re-strike type.
4.7. At minimum, all lighting provided to be "Energy Saving" low mercury type.
4.8. Do not provide radioactive lighting of any kind on University projects.
4.9. Install a 120 volt receptacle at floor level near each exit that has an exit sign. (Is this a
requirement associated with an exit or exit signs?)
4.10. No quartz or mercury vapor lighting is to be added on the UK projects.
4.11. No incandescent lighting shall be added on the UK projects unless by written exception.
Exception will be considered when energy efficient lamp varieties will not work for the
application.
4.12. Lighting controllers shall be Lutron or equal and shall be interfaced with the building automation
system (BAS). Lighting controllers should be BACnet MSTP or BACnet IP compliant to
seamlessly interface with the BAS.
