Class Officer (all present)

Regional VP (2 unable to attend)

At Large Member (all present)

Agenda items:

35 th Reunion Status o Tom Jacob and Dave Ciccarelli have graciously volunteered to coordinate

 Thanks! o Date discussion (right now 22 Oct and 3 Sep are the only firm 2016 home games)/recommendation

 3 Sep hotel availability poor.

 Other home dates may not be confirmed until Spring ’16 due to conference affiliation

 20-24 October will be the reunion date (Homecoming weekend)

Boat show weekends are prior.

80 rooms available at Westin, 50 rooms at O’Callahan (’61 at Westin as well) – should be sufficient for 35 th

 Will book Westin after looking into Lowes availability o Update on efforts/plan of attack

 Gave update on hotel search, inquiry to NAAA into N* Room and ’58 Pavilion availability, Alumni Assnj (AA) trends for 35 th Reunion attendance

N* seemed preferred, but will take what we can get

If both unavail, will probably look at large, heated, enclosed tent

 Will inform Class O’s of availability after talking to NAAA

 Mike’s Crabhouse - Thurs eve, Class dinner - Fri, Tailgater - Sat

 Plan to use Valerie Gersheiser again to help coordinate effort ($3500 last time)

 Golf will probably have to be part of USNA Homecoming event

 Reunion information will be posted on the class website as it becomes available

Class Goal ideas: Is there something we’d like to focus on as a Class? o Class get togethers

 Suggestion to coordinate ’81 get togethers at all away football games (Home games tailgaters are graciously coordinated by Bubba Turman (Spot 36)…Thanks Bub)

 Looking for volunteers to coordinate events at the following games this Fall

(Facebook? Website?):

Ohio State (M&T Bank Stadium – Baltimore) – Patty Whitney has begun

 Temple (Lincoln Financial)

 Texas State (San Marcos, Tx)

Air Force (Colorado Springs)

Notre Dame (FedEx Field, Landover, Md)

South Alabama (Mobile, Al)

Army (M&T Bank Stadium – Baltimore)

Finding a dedicated volunteer for deceased classmate coordination o Regional Rep?

 Sometimes a long delay in finding out and dissemination of information

Currently, information is passed between USNA decedent affairs, Class

Secretary, Pres and VP for dissemination

Trying to decrease lag time

 Would like to use Co. Reps, Regional VPs, etc. to help

Would like to offer Class assistance and presence to families, if desired o Jim Hamill proposed a program modeled on SWA Critical Incident Response Team using

(1 or 2 folks from each Co.) – he has volunteered to assist

 Otto will get together with Jim to look at Southwest’s Program as a model and how to best adapt to our needs

Press to reinvigorate the Co Reps o Would like an updated and confirmed roster of those currently serving. From there I can solicit others to volunteer where we’re lacking. Solicitation in the Shipmate column as well.

 Patty Whitney and Steve Colon will consolidate list and pass to Otto

 Otto will send emails to Co. Reps requesting specific assistance to try and stay in contact with Company mates and keep Steve appraised of events of Class interest

Otto will pass latest AA class list to Class O’s and Reunion coordinators

(Complete)

 Look to make more use of the Regional VPs

Ask them try to organize at least one ’81 event in their region similar to DC

Luncheons, etc.

 May look at adding other Regional VPs in areas of ’81 concentration

Ethics Award Dinner – Tim Disher o Thursday, 11 September 2014

 Email Tim (disher@usna.edu) with full name and spouse info NLT 23 July if interested in attending

 Priority to those who haven’t had a chance to attend

 Would like to maximize attendance from Class of ’81 and spouses (~30ish)

 Ethics Essay winners are recognized

Art Athens, Supe and Mrs. Lawrence are normally in attendance

Those interested, please email Tim Disher.

Tim will keep us appraised of list

Agree with type of information to be shotgunned out via classmail (deceased classmates, class pertinent info (luncheons, etc.)) o Personal agendas (meetings, book deals, etc.) go out individually via Facebook

 FYI, Linkedin evidently has some security issues and some folks are unable to use o Website will be the repository of current class information http://www.usna1981.org/

 Reunion information, etc.

 Patty requested an Active Duty Flag Officer update

Fuzz Harrison will provide (Complete)

 Significant bump in site activity when referenced in Classmail

Financial Status and giving o Class fiscal health – Jim R.

 Accounts

Ethics Award - ~ $ 420K

Otto and Tim Disher will meet with Art Athens and investigate priorities

 Center for Ethical Leadership (CEL) support - ~ $ 207K

 Used $ 35K last year

 Otto and Tim will sit down and discuss need with Art Athens

Undesignated Project - ~ $35K

Consider moving to CEL or Ethics Award account if it makes sense

Class Checking - ~ $ 66K

 Used for charitable giving, NAAA Tailgater fee($300), Annual Dolan

Award, Reunion seed money

Bottom line: we look healthy o Charitable giving from the class (Wreaths Across America (WAA)) – (we gave $1500 last year)

 Places wreaths on all headstones at USNA Cemetery (for the past 2 years) coordinated by Carol Turman

Same as effort at Arlington and other Veterans’ Cemeteries

We have donated as a Class both years

Proposed donation of $1500 this year

 Approved – no dissent

 Had trouble getting USNA formal endorsement last year

 Legal wouldn’t allow it, not sure of reasoning

Also had trouble getting other Class Presidents to disseminate information for individual donations o Tailgater needs?

 None noted – Bubba must’ve dozed off

Jim Unger proposals o Petitioning Pres, SECDEF, SECNAV & CNO to have CVN-81 named the USS Robert E.

Dolan

 While everyone liked the idea initially, discussion and follow-up concerns emerged (it would be awkward to single out one of our two classmates lost on 9/11…. what about

Mike McGinty?)

 General consensus was that the likelihood of success would be relatively low

 Another suggestion: Sponsorship by the Dolan and McGinty families

Otto will discuss with Tom Moore to investigate possibilities o Using Google + as a communication tool

 No one on the line admitted to knowing anything about Google+ (except Fuzz’s son)

 Will ask Jim to work with Patty to investigate if this would make sense. Is it worth the time and effort to open up another social media avenue?

Supe CoC o VADM (sel) Ted Carter has been confirmed by the Senate to be the next Superintendent of USNA

 Admiral Carter approved dissemination of the CoC date to the class

1000, 23 July 2014 with reception to follow in Alumni Hall (Fuzz, you have to go to the ceremony to attend the reception)

 Class members can expect to receive an evite in the near future.

Info will be posted on class website: http://www.usna1981.org/

Other thoughts/alibis? o Received word that Marty Bodrog will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at 1300,

Tuesday 28 October 2014.

 Additional information will be posted on the class website as it becomes available.
