Role Description Environmental and Ethics Campus Officer Responsible to: Campus Sabbatical Officer Posts co-ordinated: Volunteer Coordinator/ Campaigns Coordinator Effective date of this Role Description: November 2013 – October 2014 Location: Students Union offices on relevant campus and throughout your campus _________________________________________________________________________________________ Overall purpose of role The overall purpose of the Environmental and Ethics Campus Officer (ECO) is: To assist with improving rates of recycling, re-using and reducing waste and of energy reduction by engaging students living on campus and elsewhere. To assist with improving awareness and engagement with the use of ethically sourced materials by students and the university. To take part in awareness campaigns and promote the core aims of the Students Union Environmental and Ethics policies. To help develop UUSU environmental and ethical campaigns To play a key role in increasing UUSU’s engagement with the Green Impacts Award Scheme Skills/Experience Required Strong empathy with the values of environmental protection and ethical living and a good understanding of these issues Willingness to attend training and to promote environmental awareness and ethical living to the wider student population Excellent interpersonal skills Proficiency with IT systems and social marketing; Email, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, Facebook and Twitter Commitment To ensure the role is successful we anticipate you’ll need to contribute on average eight hours a month, with scope for additional involvement. As an ECO you will gain invaluable experience from volunteering and working with others. You will develop a number of skills including project management, problem solving, analytical skills, team skills, and communication skills. Valuable practical experience for those students interested in pursuing a career in environmental protection and education, project management, energy issues, advocacy, politics, ethics, community development Role specific training and induction so that they are confident to carry out the roles expected of them Monthly progress and support meetings with their volunteer supervisor Opportunity to attend any relevant external training courses Gain valuable networking skills, and have the opportunity to make links and liaise with organisations within the wider community, as well as within the Students' Union Enhance their administrative and IT skills Develop event management skills Gain hands on experience of providing support and advice to their peers, with full support of the Students' Union Main duties/ Responsibilities To promote energy and waste efficiency by visiting residents in halls to encourage good practice To assist in manning environmental awareness displays at UUSU Freshers Fayre, hall reception areas etc to encourage students to: o o o o o o Maximise the use of recycling facilities Save energy - “Switch it Off” Reduce personal water usage Participate in an end of year “Bag it Up for charity” event Re-use shopping bags Make more sustainable and ethical lifestyle choices To contribute ideas for monthly environmental and/ethical promotion activities and events To contribute articles to newsletters, social media and other promotional material. To assist with auditing success of environmental and ethical initiatives. To attend an initial environmental induction training package, with additional optional training and development opportunities available, including IEMA approved audit training. To demonstrate a responsible attitude when representing UUSU at promotional visits and events. To be competent in the use of email, and IT packages such as Word and Excel. To promote environmental statistical reports To attend events and promotional initiatives where required To update display material in halls. Additional Information ECOs must adhere to the Student Volunteering Code of Conduct at all times. ECOs will be coordinated by the Campus Sabbatical Officer and the Volunteer Coordinator. This is a voluntary unpaid post. However, volunteers’ participation will be tracked and upon successful completion of the voluntary role the Volunteer Coordinator will be happy to provide a reference or other validation of a student’s participation for academic purposes or with regard to future employment.
